i know a lot about the carter. president carter's life and his presidency. i've taught seminars on as presidency four or five times, but there were many, many things that i did not know that i learned from from your book and from your research. so thank you for this for this work. and i'm really excited about talking with you about it. well, thank you for having me. well, you've written a biography is about a variety of fascinating figures. carrie talked about some of them, robert ames, mcgeorge bundy, william bonney, most notably j. robert oppenheimer, the book that you won the pulitzer for. but what attracted you to jimmy carter as a biographer? biographical subject. well, back in 1990, you know, literally more than 30 years ago now, i was just finishing my first biography that took me ten years to write on john j. mccloy. and in that book, i had to write a long chapter, really, about the iran hostage crisis, which, of course, involved jimmy carter's presidency. and that was my sort of first introduction to writing about him. and i got curious about his pr

of jimmy carter. the lecture is titled, why not the best? it gives us some insight to keep the title in mind as we think about carter's legacy. i will start us off here with jimmy carter in the news. we announced former president carter will live out the rest of his days in home hospice and this kicked off a lot of conversation about his presidential legacy and legacy in the world, some of you write about today. until this point, he has had a pretty negative legacy, often at the bottom of lists of great presidents. here are a couple, these are both conservative news site comparing democratic presidents to jimmy carter and these tended to be unflattering sorts of comparisons, especially with inflation. you have a lot of comparisons between carter and biden but it didn't start there, there are conspirator -- comparisons with obama. lately, as you saw them the pc read, there has been a reassessment of inking about the sick africans of jimmy carter as an individual at a president and rethinking what happe

carter's funeral.tween the king family and the carter family was real and it was personal. how do you want the world to remember someone you got to know, and your family got to know? >> well, first of all, i have to say that president carter showed us, and i first need to see -- say my condolences to his family, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and all of the family members, but the world needs to understand, here's a man who once he left office, he was involved in building houses for people, he was probably the greatest humanitarian that our nation and the world has seen, certainly one of them. i consider him one of the greatest of all time, because a president who serves has the right to just not have to do much, but he opted to continue, he and his wife, setting an example for all of us to help make the world better. going around democratic countries and observing elections, hundreds of elections. these are also important and as you stated, he was very close to my grandfather, and very clos

and jimmy carter's mother delivered rosalynn carter. so jimmy carter knew rosalynn carter every day of her life, which is an amazing that's amazing. >> crazy. the yeah, the census bureau doesn't even track weddings or marriages much over 75 years. >> so the fact that he knew this woman for all her life, they were married for 77 years, and they were joined at the hip, you know, that was an incredible partnership. everywhere he went, she went everywhere, you know, even when she was sick and he was sick, they would sit in the middle of their plains home, plains, georgia home holding hands, watching braves games, watching the news, watching old, you know, metv reruns of westerns and television shows. so they were really, really a link partnership. >> his mom was also ahead of her time. >> yeah, his i mean, i think his whole family, well, his mother was, you know, his mother, um, influenced him a lot. his mother was very influential in plains, georgia, very influential in who he became and what he became. and also, you know, just his surroun

of jimmy carter and rosalynn carter was and is exceptional. when and why did make that decision? well when i had a sabbatical beginning in about august 1990. and so that's when i came over to the library and because i was already interested, john carter as a writer. and so i just started looking to see what was available in the library. and of course i was a huge treasure trove of untouched primary materials. and i started reading little bit more about him and i didn't get very into it before. i really everything read rosalynn was involved in it. and so it occurred to me you could not write about jimmy carter without writing about rosalynn. and also now i know these years later you can't about rosalynn without writing about jimmy carter. but there was unique partner ship and almost everything we know today. all these years later, i would magnificent accomplishments. it is a result of that partnership that was just an unusual and people asked me when i was a newspaper recently that talks about the influence rosalynn had on jimmy and i don't lik

carter center? >> well, i think look, i think, you know, in terms of the carter foundation and that will be questions about the family and keeping that specifically going. i think the real impact, though, will be what we just said. you know, we have two presidents in a row who are going to, you know, leave office in their in their 80s, which may not be relevant, but i think the carter the lasting carter legacy is going to be the post-presidency of future younger american presidents. as i said, i think he created a model that others are going to are are mostly going to aspire to meet. he recognized that someone who had been president of the u.s., even though they had lost kind of the trappings of power, still could convene resources and channel resources in a way that could make a real difference in the lives of many people in many different ways. as you point out, disease eradication, um, election, you know, election monitoring and the role that he played in that. and i think he kind of he kind of d

kate, you've written about the carters, jimmy carter and rosalynn carter quite a bit in your career.y carter and and the first lady, his first lady, rosalynn carter. they were a true team as much as any couple who ever occupied the white house. and i assume you agree with that. how do you see their collective legacy? >> you know, and i said this earlier, it really is decency. it's also professionalizing roles within the white house. rosalynn carter is the first first lady to have an office in the east wing. she's the first first lady to have a real, um, platform. she chose mental health. she would meet with jimmy carter in the oval office once a week. she, of course, campaigned for him during the hostage crisis, when he was really kept in the rose garden in the white house. he wasn't, you know, able to freely campaign around the country. it was rosalynn who did that for him. so they were a true team. he called her an extension of himself. um, and i think one thing that we haven't talked about with president carter that i think is important to remember, and this goes to his christiani

and there there's plenty of evidence that carter was carter was in these ideas. he agreed with these ideas that even as a as a person in the south, he had actually borne personal cost as a business person, not joining these kind of reactive southern white citizens councils and things. but when it came to being president just wasn't at the top of his agenda and he has sort a mixed legacy for that reason in them. and the early part of the administration, the supreme heard a big case on affirmative action and the administration was really torn internally about exactly where to go with that. but they ended up kind of coming out in general support of of the concept of affirmative action. but again, that's kind of reactive. yeah. did any of his campaign focus civil rights like were there broken promises, i guess, or promises, but that that's a good question. yeah, it wasn't really wasn't really a campaign focus either. i mean, it was the campaign was lot more general about this kind of good government kind of idea. yeah it wasn't really front and center campaign. and y

what did jimmy carter do? jimmy carter, hired as fed chair somebody he knew who would put up interest rates in order to bring the inflation, the double digit inflation rate down. number two, um, he tried to get the hostages out through. negotiation. um, those negotiations didn't succeed initially. and so what did he do? he decided to embark in a risky rescue operation in iran in 1980 to bring them home. that rescue operation . the american people lost confidence in his ability to handle the iran hostages issue. not at the very beginning, but only after the failure of the iran hostage mission. it was a mission that he didn't micromanage. he took the advice from the u.s. military. it was a courageous, smart effort. but it didn't work. and finally, jimmy carter pushed for fiscal conservatism as a democratic president. he wanted a balanced budget that put him up against the great senate liberal lion, ted kennedy and ted kennedy ran against him for the nomination of the democrat party. ted kennedy didn't win, but t

the carters were happy.osalynn carter basically said, i am not going back to plains. >> they start a family. jimmy carter rises to the coveted position of lieutenant in the nuclear submarine service, and he loves it. life is sublime until carter gets the devastating news that his father is dying. >> when his father got cancer, carter had a conundrum. if i don't go there and save the longtime family peanut business, it's going to collapse. >> rosalynn nor i ever dreamed that i would leave the navy until i'd served 30 years in surface ships and in submarines. but in 1953, when my father died, i decided, to my own amazement, that i would resign from the navy. when i told rosalynn, she was absolutely shocked and furious. in fact, when we finally got out of the navy in october of 1953 and drove from schenectady, new york all the way to plains, she didn't say two words to me on the whole trip. she was furious when he got here for the funeral. >> the people that came up to him, both white and actually african ameri

but in fact, jimmy carter did it. now, why did jimmy carter do it? because jimmy carter was a small businessman, and he understood that at times, federal regulations and sometimes state regulations undermined his ability to engage in efficient business. and so once he reached washington, he worked with allies in congress, not just democrats, republicans, to to deregulate the trucking industry, the aviation industry, the telecom industry, and ultimately the energy industry. and finally, jimmy carter, um, changed his mind about the nature of the soviet threat. he didn't change it. when the soviets invaded afghanistan, he actually began to rethink his assumptions before. and as a result, he supported defense procurement, including the acceleration of the stealth technology that had already been worked on in the ford administration. so to some extent, the foundations for the reagan defense buildup started under jimmy carter. and finally jimmy carter, based on his religious faith, based on the fact that he had served in the u.s. military during world war

bush, bill clinton, jimmy carter. how do you think jimmy carter fit into that group? what were his relationships like with those in the so-called presidents club? because he did something that a lot of former presidents didn't do, which is criticize other serving presidents. >> right. there's a famous picture of that meeting where he's standing off to the side, sort of different from the rest of the people there. and i think it was because he saw his role as a citizen rather than a member of that exclusive club, where there's a sort of rule that you don't criticize the sitting president. and he was able to say what he thought of george bush's foreign policy, or what he thought of what x or y had done. and that didn't sit well, maybe with some of the other presidents. but it was all in keeping with the idea that now i'm a citizen, i can say what i want, and i have ideas and i have opinions and i have i want to say what i think is right or wrong. >> can you speak to how kind of rare it will be to have two intricately planned, highly choreographed events in washington? a
