nbc's catie beck is in atlanta this morning.nd catie, stacey abrams, former gubernatorial candidate who probably would be governor now if it were not for voter suppression, is being credited with driving turnout across georgia. help us understand why that is. what she did. >> reporter: as these votes have trickled in, people more and more posting and talking about her being a hero to georgia and how she is really responsible for this change in momentum in the democratic party here. what they're saying is that basically abrams after her narrow loss, only 55,000 votes decided her election. after that loss, she committed herself to really changing this tide, putting infrastructure in place, exposing some of that voter suppression. and most importantly, working on voter registration in georgia. they credit her with registering 800,000 new voters in georgia. they say that is really the momentum and the force that changed the tide here. she was already sort of a local hero in atlanta, a lot of people familiar with that governor's race

let's turn to catie beck. catie beck is tracking the count for us in atlanta. catie when we could hear from state officials again. >> reporter: we don't have a concrete time at this moment. we expect it will be sometime this morning in the 9:00 hour or so to hear an update as to where that vote total stands. it is hard to determine exactly how many votes are left because there has been sort of a slow trickle overnight. as you've said, we've seen those vote totals changing favoring joe biden, but it has been a slow process. that is because they are counting those provisional ballots and that requires an extra layer of scrutiny. they're trying to decide if these provisional ballots should be eligible and should be counted. on top of that, they are counting those military and overseas ballots that were due in yesterday by 5:30 in order to be counted. we know the provisional ballots, the military ballots are what's left and outstanding. when that will wrap up, we have no exact timetable. you would think they're getting down to the bottom, there can't be much left a

catie, what do we know at this point? >> reporter: well, steph, we've been seeing those vote totals trickle in overnight. we got 5,000 new votes in from fulton county that put the two candidates about 7,000 votes apart. this is a razor-thin margin in a state the size of georgia, which is why the secretary of state yesterday indicated this will likely be going to a recount. now, how many are still left. that is a good question at this point. we haven't had an official update from the secretary of state, but what we do know is, as of last night, there were 14,000 provisional ballots statewide, and then the military and overseas ballots could have been up to 8,400. could have been anywhere between zero and 8,400, due by 5:30 yesterday afternoon, in order to be eligible. so at this point, we are guessing that this number is probably under 10,000, and georgia is getting down to the end here in terms of vote counting. that is what we will probably be getting an update on later this morning about but these vote counts have been

i want to stay talking georgia and bring in catie beck. she's in atlanta.et's start with the presidential race. any word when we will be getting final numbers? >> yeah, good morning, steph. there is no definitive timeframe when georgia will certify all of their votes. at this point, there are outstanding ballots, in gwinnett county. they have 600 military and absentee ballots to count and 1,000 provisional ballots to get through today. they suspect they will get through those today and tomorrow the board will be certifying the votes. in several other counties there's small numbers of outstanding ballots that need to be reconciled. at this point, it looks like even if we get final numbers from georgia in the week this, is certainly going to go to a recount, that can last up to seven days, before we finally have a number to settle upon here in georgia. president-elect joe biden is ahead by about 10,000 votes here now. and he has been steadily at a slow trickle, adding to that total. that is a relatively small number in a state this size. it is too close to ca
