cdot leaders say that could have helped save do's dozens of lives last year. the total number of traffic fatalities 545 jumped 10% from 2014 to 2015. cdot says more drivers on the road as a result of a population boom is one factor but the biggest cause alcohol involved in 32% of deaths and not wearing seatbelt was in nearly half telephone vehicle crashes resulting in a death. one life lost the a bad decision is too many. and you know when it is things where people could make a better decision use that seatbelt. that on. you know, that's the difference dying. and definitely the difference between serious injury and maybe just walking away with very minor injuries from a crash. >>reporter: cdot says they are trying to bring down that number of traffic fatalities mainly through education. they say new this year light up boards you see when driving along the highways like here along i-25 they are going to be having a tally of the total number of traffic deaths so far this year to help drivers get the message. reporting live along i-25 jason green our for denver 7

cdot is out now trying to keep the roads safe and denver7 reporter jaclyn allen is live, jaclyn, cdot is telling you that they started snow shifts at 3:00 this morning? >>reporter: well, there isn't a whole lot that has accumulated this is i-25 at arapahoe and it is smooth sailing right now, the traffic is thick here because it's rush hour, it is moving smoothly. here's the pavement here, unlike these storms earlier that left these massive amounts of snow, any flurries we've seen today, this pavement is warm enough that it's melting it off. it ma by a different story -- may by different story tonight and in the morning commute. this afternoon, we went out to the denver public works, maintenance yard, to take a look at what they were doing, they have a lot of plows and deicing trucks, getting ready to go, get thing ready for a long night. and cdot says it will have about 100 plows, working around the clock here on state highways until l the storm passes. the pavement is clear, possibly until saturday, they'll be out here. now, they said the timing for this snow keeping getting pushed b

cdot may shock you with a new campaign. every wednesday they'll post the number of traffic deaths so far this year. denver7's sally mamdooh found one of these signs. cdot hoping this will reduce some crashes. >> reporter: that's right. how do you change how drivers drive? you bring the message to the road, which is why you can expect to see these signs, some highways here with traffic crash fatalities numbers on them. this is just a way to encourage drivers to drive safely. just last year 545 people died % in crashes on colorado roads, which is about a 12% increase cdot, who is behind this, is hoping this will drop the number of car crash fatalities as well as send a clear message that there is a problem with how people are driving out on the road. as you can see now, the traffic is picking up out here on i-25. you can imagine that everybody out here that's driving by this sign is taking a look and if you just looked at the sign, it said on it 13 traffic deaths so far this year. that's a high number. we're just still in jan
