chad myers, tropical storm chantal, tell me about her, chad, what's she doing now. >> the problem withmost to a hurricane. the last time we had a storm this far south this early, 2005. think about that year, 28 named storms, one of the names was katrina. this is not good. we're starting the season so early. 50 miles per hour headed to barbados right now. eventually into the caribbean and very close to the dominican republic, probably by wednesday afternoon right over the dr, and then where does it go? that's the big story. we know it will hit here and probably be torn up a little bit, that's a high mountain state, country right through there. the mountains will tear it up but back into warm water and the computers are turning it left, a lot like sandy happened up to the north turning it left because there's a high pressure that won't let it go any farther. the big turn from south florida up into the carolinas. could be a big storm. that's very warm water, the warm water over the bahamas will be like putting 93 octane in your car. it will make it bigger. we'll watch it all week long. >>

chad myers is joining us. chad, obviously tornadoes are awful.very dramatic. >> reporter: very dramatic because what we saw in those pictures, i looked at them for 4 minutes now. the wind came from one direction, then all of a sudden there was very little wind, then the wind came from the other direction. the people inside that building were literally inside the tornado proper and the winds spun all around it. about 8 to 12 people did get some injuries with this system but most of them were inside. that is a very large tornado for italy. now if italy or if all of the countries of europe were actually one country, called the european union, then they would have the second number of tornadoes of any country in the world behind, of course, the u.s. but not quite in front of canada. so no more weather for them today. just about done. that severe weather has moved over towards bucharest and into the eastern parts of europe at this hour. >> all right. quiet in europe. thanks, chad. we'll take a quick break. we'll be right back. thanks to the grit and r

chad myers is here with the weekend forecast and it looks pretty wild. >> it still is.ed because of the threat of wildfires and another day of extreme weather, that was yesterday. spectacular light shows filled the sky from d.c. to boston, but the sizzling temps, too much for some. >> the outline of the shade is the outline of the crowd. >> 120 people received heat-related medical attention. and heavy rain and floods plagued other parts of the east. >> raining on our parade. it's soaking our parade. >> reporter: rising waters turned tragic in southwest virginia. one man drowned outside his home battling the waters. many roads in the area simply impassable. in the southeast, parts of the florida panhandle received as much as 18 inches of rain. >> it hasn't been this hot since i've been down here. i have been down here since i was 8 years old. >> reporter: rain chairs lined this road in southern ohio. in nashville, tennessee, the rain didn't stop their party. >> getting a little soaked this year. >> reporter: out west golf ball size hail pommels parts of new mexico. despi

chad myers is joining us to explain what's going on. chad, what is going on? spot on the sun. now i do not want you, anyone, please, to go out and look at the sun. this dot, spot, black area, is not there to the visible eye. it's not there to the visible spectrum. you have to have a special telescope looking at special wavelengths. what typically happens is the nag n magnetic field flies out of the sun and is recaptured here. this large black dot, coroanal hole, is an area where magnetism flows away from the sun and doesn't get captured back down. it was discovered about three or four weeks ago. a large black hole has rotated around the other side. another coronal hole is there. this is a cool spot on the sun, kind of cool to look at. go to spaceweather.com and see these all the time on the left side of the screen. coronal homes, some of this wind, some of this coronal wind, almost mass ejection comes at us, could approach the atmosphere of the earth in a couple of days. that could affect maybe some radio frequencies and things. but otherwise just kind of cool

here's the man who can tell us, our meteorologist chad myers. he's over at the cnn weather center., thursday, friday, actually get hotter from here. this is the coolest day of the rest of the week until saturday. the heat index in philly will be 104 tomorrow. washington, d.c., 103. you get toward annapolis, it will be more muggy. you're down by the chesapeake, the heat index could run to 107. it's hot in the east, cold in the west. it's how this always works out. when one goes up, the other goes down. and finally, temperatures will go down on the weekend. sunday into monday, back into the 80s for d.c. even boston will get down into the 70s for highs by the time monday rolls around. here's your philadelphia forecast. from the heat index tomorrow of 104 down to 86 by monday. that will feel good. at least few degrees from where you are now will make you feel better. whereas even new york city tomorrow, it's going to be 98 degrees and temperatures that i'm showing you, heat index that we talk about, 102, 103, those are always in the shade. if you're standing in the sunshine, you'll fee

chad myers is tracking it for us. >> it's another day where we are good in the morning.s where we are now, new york city is calming down. a great time to fly out of the big cities. thunderstorms fire out of the appalachians from new york to philadelphia and into new jersey and some of those storms could slow down airplanes. some could knock down trees again. >>> a line of weather coming into chicago is going to pass by. this morning could be a few minutes late. here is where we were last week. and this weekend. brutally hot in the east. brutally hot in the west and kind of mild in the midwest. that changes this week, completely. the jet that is down here will lift all the way to the north and so will our jet pattern for weather. the big weather will be farther to the north where the thunderstorms will be. always follow the jet. it's the road the storms go on. the storms, the wetness, the rain is farther to the north than it's been. atlanta, 86. d.c. 9. orlando, 91. muggy there. yesterday was 92. today, 88. it feels like 96. i'm not sure i can tell the difference. >> appr

chad myers is joining us. what is the latest in all of this flooding across the country?when you have storms in the summer, just the mugginess, you felt it in new york city, when you don't have a jet stream over those storms, those storms can't move and when they don't move, they sit there and rain for hours and it floods. now, another place that's going to see flooding, too, out here in the west and in the pacific for flossie, not a lot of weather has hit hawaii. you think it's out there in the middle of the pacific waiting to get slammed by a hurricane. there have been a couple, i watched the damage of that back in kuaui, it's going to be a 40 mile per hour storm and it will make some flooding. you see those islands on the pictures and there's a straight ramp up to the peak. all of the water has to rush down. let's look at the pictures from arizona and also north carolina. i think they are the most telling. what people get in trouble for, you don't understand how quickly this water can come up. they can wash through the ditches and overpasses in 10 to 15 minutes. look a

emily schmidt is in washington on the national mall and casey is in idyllwild california and chad myers is at the cnn weather center in atlanta. how are people handling this heat as they get around the nation's capital? >> they have been doing this every day this week. you look behind me at the guys playing soccer, they make it look easy. that is deceptive. there is a heat advisory and it feels like the triple digits. you have to drink a lot of water. some people are i am proceed miezing. one woman said it is a three popsicle day but the business of the day as to go on. we met one woman from pennsylvania planning to meet with lawmakers on capitol hill to lobby for a cause and will attend a rally and she says the heat cannot get in the way of those plans. >> yes. >> is the weather going to get in the way. >> never. never. we're actually going to go on a march so we're going to walk in the heat at like i think from 2 to 3. right in the hottest part of it there will be a few thousand of us walking. >> now, so far there have not been any major heat related problems here in washington. we ha

chad myers, let's start with the u.s. and canada. what can folks expect today? >> heat index 105, 110 and all of these numbers we talk about, we have, it is will your body when it per spierz, will the perspiration evaporate? when it does you get cooled down like a shot at the doctor. that's what your body is hoping to do, hoping to evaporate some of the heat it is believe up inside of it and unable to do that when it is your body temperature. canada has been very hot all week long. new york city 101. washington, d.c. today will go to 104. that's what it feels like outside. there is relief coming. there is relief coming by sunday into monday. still, tomorrow could be i agree or two warmer than today itself. finally, montreal, you're going to cool down, 73 on sunday. that will feel real good compared to where you have been. >> chad, tell us about japan. i understand that people are dying from heat stroke, most of them elderly people and u.k. dealing with this as well. >> the u.k. and japan and parts of asia. i know it is summertime but this is a particularly bruta

chad myers, the question is how long is this going to last?o last until friday. we're tuesday, wednesday, thursday and now into friday where today will be 95 rksz some temperatures on friday maybe 98. so it doesn't get better from here. it gets worse until saturday when the front comes by. it's just a sweltering area of hot air that's just sitting right over the northeast. and as this spins around, the heat just sinks. and it's the sunshine -- tell you what, i was just in new york city all last week. and the heat index got to 101. you could see like lines of ants, people walking only on the shady side of the street because it feels ten degrees warmer on the sunny side. all the numbers that we say, 100, 105, that's in the shade. make sure the pets have shade, you have shade and plenty of water too. and if your bags take longer to get from the plane to the carousel, all those workers have to work outside too. >> yeah, yeah. and it's interesting, more people die of heat than any other weather event. i found that out from a meteorologist much like

anna corin is sweating it out in new york, chad myers is at the cnn weather channel. you, anna, what are people doing to cope in new york? >> wolf, i can tell you a couple hours ago i said the temperatures were bearable. well, it is anything but. the heat is now stifling. as you say it's reached the mid-90s here, but i can literally feel the heat off the pavement. and with the humidity, it definitely feels like it's in the triple digits. i have no idea what these people are doing in times square. they're obviously cueing up for tickets to a theater they desperately want to see a play, a broadway show, but you can see they are fanning themselves. this lady here, she is from new york. how would you describe the heat? >> very, very hot. totally hot and we're crazy to be out here. drink lots of water. >> very good advice. how are you going to escape the heat today? >> going to see a broadway play in the air-conditioned room. hopefully i can get tickets. >> fantastic. okay. there you go, air-conditioning, people are going to escape the heat with the air-conditioning. power

washington, chad myers. emily, it's a scorcher, people still have to work outside and it's been no means easy. >> reporter: wolf, not at all. it's 123 degrees right standing on this sidewalk here. you know that saying if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen? not advice you can follow when your livelihood is working out of a food truck. it's almost as i. a losing battle. a fan set up. it's more difficult, about two trucks down. korean barbecue truck. down there at 10:00 when they were starting to cook. they were trying to work over a grill. we used a heat gun to measure it, 174 degrees above it. tough job for them today but they say it's what they have to do. it's not better 13 stories up, that's where we went to a rooftop and found a construction crew trying to get a break when they were on 118-degree temperatures. >> at least we do have a little bit of shade right here that we can be under right now right in the in the direct sunlight. in the building where there's no air movement, it's terrible

chad myers is tracking the latest for us. what is the latest on this path?w on that map, just the l means it is not a tropical storm, will not be a tropical storm at some point in its path. so much land in its way. cuba, haiti, dominican republic. an awful lot of rainfall across this area over the next 24 to 48 hours. continue to uv up towards the north and the northwest and if you continue that line, that's the u.s. not that this is going to be 0 100-mile-per-hour or 2 200-mile-per-hour giant storm. we don't think so because there is so much land in the way. florida up to the carolinas and what we're worried about this area here has picked up between four and eight inches of rainfall in the past five days. let me prove it to you. i can take you back and show you what has gone on and the models here taking the rain right on up into georgia and the carolina area. the past five days, look at all this red. that is six inches or more around atlanta, birmingham, montgomery and all the way back it into the panhandle of florida. some spots have picked up 15 inches

let's get to chad myers for more on that. what is its trajectory? >> eventually towards martinique, maybe domenica. normally, july 8th the first named storm on average. where are we now? chantal, the third named storm. already getting a big start. here's martinique right here. expect that big storm to almost be a 50 or 60 mile an hour storm as it approaches the mountains. did you see that wave come? we did the wave on "new day" right here. it comes in, still 65 miles per hour. this matters where this is on the map. if we're on the south side of the cone, the storm gets stronger, the water's warmer, and it's not affected by the mountains of haiti, the dar, and also cuba. if it's brushing the turks and caicos and heads out to the ocean. we don't know yet because the models don't know yet. these are the spaghetti lines. some models are to the left, some to the right. we'll see where it goes in the next couple of years. the third storm of the year. the first hurricane shouldn't happen for another month. this has the potential, some pretty warm water rig

our meteorologist and severe weather expert chad myers is in the cnn weather center.is it for hawaii potentially to be hit by a tropical storm of this nature? >> i was in hawaii not that long after anike hit. it's very rare. you think about them sitting out there waiting to be hit, very rare compared to sitting in florida waiting to be hit. only four or five tropical storms in the central pacific at all. it's kind of a rare out there. this is not going to be the big event could you see with a large tropical system. it is only a 40 mile-per-hour storm. that's why there's only five people in the shelter. there will be winds bigger in kansas than with this storm in hawaii. the issue will be not the wind. 40 miles per hour may knock down a tree or two but the wind is going to bring in moisture, one up those hills. that mountain area will get a lot of runoff and i can show you the black and you white of it. and the rain just about hit the island. i shot my best round of golf right, there 8 2 right there, wolf. we'll see what it does to hawaii. >> probably not going to be p

our meteorologist chad myers is joining us now. he's got more on what's going on. the images, the pictures pretty devastating, chad. >> yeah. this is what happens, wolf, when you get an area that has burned. that is what they have there in colorado. many, many millions of acres that have burned recently. when it rains on top of that land and that's we're talking about a mountain, that land has no more root system. the trees, the grasses and everything that used to allow the water to run off is all gone. just dirt there. when the dirt becomes so saturated, it just begins to run off as a mudslide. here's what happened yesterday. thunderstorms and will happen again today. thunderstorms developed along the ridges of the mountain here and that thunderstorm activity caused rain to come down. as the rain fell in the same place for a very long time, it got into the canyons and, eventually, down through and eventually down into the plains. well, the canyon was the problem. all that water and all of that mud had to go down through and what do you put in the canyon? that's whe
