i'm going to bring in our meteorologist chad myers. chad, can you help me out with this.le that the crisis center is saying we have received questions about center typhoon hayian and whether they're providing resources. they said they built a crisis map featuring the path of the typhoon, evacuating centers and more. how might they use technology to help and find people here? >> for a very long time, no one in that country, at least along that swath is going to be internet service, no power, phone lines or any of the resources they need. google has set up this, gooble.org/people finder/2013 yolanda, you can look for someone or have information about someone. even when they get one cell tower back up, everybody is going to try to be on it. the best way to get around the internet or get any information out is to be texting, not trying to call. text takes a little bit of time, but all of a sudden they get sent. this is how they're going to have to start putting the pieces back together. we don't have pictures of the bad spots yet. and we may not for a while. you're going to h

chad myers tracking the storm. put it in perspective, how devastating and big is it? >> it's bigger than anything we've seen in america, anderson. it's the wind force of 195 mile per hour storm, knocked everything down, tore trees out of the ground. if trees are there, it ripped bark off. it's a 20-mile wide f 4 tornado across the country. we don't have the worst pictures. we may not get them for days. this will take a long time to clean up. there is a bowling ball that rolled through the islands you talked about and everything got knocked out with the wind. the wind also generated a huge wave, a huge storm surge. i can see 40 or 50 feet coming into some of these towns and cities you're talking about. there is damage everywhere and we can't get a handle on it because we've never seen damage from 195-mile per hour wind in a hurricane, only in a tornado. >> particularly on an island where structures are not that well made we're talking about all variety, all manner of structures. the storm is dangerous and heading where, vietnam? >> vietnam. it's back out into the ocean

all this is going to freeze up as soon as the sunsets. >> chad myers, don't go too far. we'll check back in momentarily. chad, appreciate it. this whole mess of weather taking aim at several major airports. take a look at this map with me, and you can see these airports in particular with potential for several hour delays. you heard rene talking about the "d" word. you don't want cancellations. if a flight gets canceled, there may not be room on the next one. zain asher with advice. what can travelers do if their plans are totally thrown off by the weather? >> hey, brooke. listen, if your flight has been canceled specifically because of storm-related issues, you've got to remember that different airlines have different policies in place. there's not this one size fits all. if you're traveling wednesday and thursday this week, most airlines have you covered. if you're flying with delta, delta is offering passengers a refund if their flights are canceled or significantly delayed because of the weather. but again, it only applies to certain airports. airports like boston, wa

chad myers, thanks so much. we do have coverage all over the country as travelers try to get where they're going before thanksgiving. gary tuchman is in washington. george howell is in buffalo. and david mattingly is at atlanta's hartsfield-jackson international airport. george, i want to start with you. you have the prettiest picture there. you're in buffalo. it snows every now and then in buffalo. still, we're on like thanksgiving eve here. how's it going up there? >> reporter: well, look, we've seen the snow come down light through most of the day, but as chad said, it is starting to come down heavier. just now starting to stick to the ground. and, john, this is just the beginning. we do understand that here in the city of buffalo they are preparing for anywhere from 4 to 6 inches of snow, and then in the south towns and what the call the southern tier and northwestern pennsylvania. the could see anywhere from 6 to 8 inches, even a foot of snow. that's great news out there for the ski resorts. but like we've

. >> so let's get the latest on the storm from meteorologist chad myers. it is crunch time, how are things looking? >> getting colder because the sunset. that's what we thought about. we talked about this. the most dangerous part of this storm would be after sunset tonight. that happened. the roads are cooling, air is cooling and we're turning pink. pink color means rain that's freezing at the ground when it hits the ground as freezing rain or sleet that's falling through the sky, rain drops coming down and freezing before it hits the ground and it sounds like little thi ting, ting, ting. all the way back towards columbus same story and raining to the south. the colder air entraining into the system really is concerning me about what this means for the next couple of days. and what travel will be like across pennsylvania, really for tonight. it could be a disaster. my parents grew up in pennsylvania. it's a hilly place. you don't need ice at all going up and down the hills, so stay off the roads if you can. advance to tomorrow and here is where it gets bad

i've got this, chad myers. >> i've got a beaker here. brooke, if you could fill the beaker halfway with some water. >> yes, sir. >> water is at room temperature. >> what we're essentially going to emulate is the notion of what the comet passing the sun and the tail of the comet. >> yeah. this is dry ice. it's frozen carbon dioxide. approximately 100 degrees below zero. i'm going to place it in the water. most folks would guess the water would instantly freeze. but watch what happens when i put it in there. >> it bubbles. >> it looks like a cheap science fiction show. what you're noticing inside the beaker is that it's bubbling. it's not boiling. what's happening is the gas from this chunk of dry ice is turning directly from a solid to a gas. you can see it bubbling through the water. right now, comet ison is losing about 3 million tons of material a second. and so that's one of the reasons, you know -- >> this must have been really big to start. >> it started out as something about two or three miles across. so it's losing material now.

i want to check in with chad myers, our severe weather expert in atlanta, and get a sense of where theer system is affecting people on the ground in a matter of hours in tacloban. chad, there is a lot of concern on the ground here about the weather. how does it look? >> well, you know, your flight was cancelled because of it, turned around. other flights, same story because there is no equipment at the airport. the airport had 15 feet of water on it. there is no equipment there, so you can't do ifr, instrument flight rule landings. there is no way to get in there whether it's rainy or if it's windy. so the ifr is gone, we only had marginal visual flight rules, so you couldn't get there. so you had to fly back and stay in manila. even for you, 6:00 local time for you, you will be able to get on another flight. because as the back side comes back, the rain will move by. i believe right now the low pressure system we have been talking about is down here to the south and will move off to the west away from you. so in a few hours, everything gets better but it was a big square because there

worth national airport, and in the cnn weather center, chad myers, our meteorologist, chad, the storm is just getting started, what can we expect in the next couple of days? >> yeah, we're in a lull, as the storm spread over texas and new mexico last night, it's kind of stalled a little bit. gone to the gulf of mexico and picking up moisture and run itself up the east coast. what we'll expect, wolf, if you're on this side of the storm which most people will be here, from new york down to d.c. and raleigh, that is all rain. along the low, is all ice. here is the snow, cold, middle, warm. that is the issue, depending on where you're going, how far you're traveling. if you're driving, a lot of these interstates will be the mess, as the lull comes out of the gulf, bringing rain and moisture with it. all of a sudden, it encounters the cold air that is there. already it is cold in buffalo, pittsburgh, cleveland, down into columbus, ohio, and then the rain and cold will mix together with freezing rain, sleet, and on the back side, snow. i don't think snow will be the really big problem with

again, chad myers is tracking the storm for us. the worst of it supposed to hit? >> this is a lot like the storm of the century in '93. it's just not as cold. so there's going to be a lot more rain than snow or ice, but there's going to be plenty. here's the low in the gulf of mexico, somewhere probably south of houston. it's going to roll through atlanta and then on up toward the northeast. if you're on, let's say, this side, that's where the snow is going to be. if you're on this side, that's where the rain is going to be. if you're along the low, that's where a lot of the ice is going to be. ice is caused when the air above is 35, 36 degrees, but the air where you live is 30, like pittsburgh, like state college, maybe wheeling, lexington, kentucky. that's the bull's eye for this ice event we have possibly going on for tomorrow and eventually even into wednesday and by thursday, it's gone. if you can put off travel until thursday, you're probably doing okay because it will be so far past nova scotia, you'll be in good shape. the r

we begin with our meteorologist chad myers at the cnn severe weather center. chad, what do our viewers need to know, especially those who are thinking of traveling this week? >> gulf of mexico moisture is going to try to run on top of canadian cold air that has run down into america. those two things don't like to happen at the same time. this rain now in the gulf coast states will turn into snow and -- it already turned into some ice for denver, dallas last night. better now. planes are flying, don't get me wrong. 5,800 planes. should be about 6,000 but they're still flying. the deal is when it gets up here into this cold air, when that moisture from the gulf of mexico gets here, we are going to have watches and warnings all the way from canada all the way south even into virginia. we even have watches already posted right now. all because of this, that gulf of mexico humidity, moisture, whatever you want to call it. kind of like a conveyor belt. know how you put a box on a conveyor belt and it ends up higher or lower depending where you want to send it? this

so let's get the latest on the storm from chad myers in the cnn weather center. let's start with airports and roads, what is going on out there? >> i can tell you the most often said comment today or question, are we there yet? because i have an 8-year-old and i can't tell you how many times i've heard that. 5,200 planes still in the air at this hour. and let me tell you, that's a lot for the day before thanksgiving, that's a lot for any wednesday because planes aren't where they need to be just yet. a lot of delays still in philadelphia. at least a couple hours for most of these planes, cancelled, cancelled on a couple planes there and we get to the word delayed and page after page of page and now we're just to the point where planes aren't coming in on time so there is no way the next plane is going to go out on time. laguardia, jfk, newark and month yell, clearing the way because it's snowing there, as well into atlanta and canada seeing quite a bit of snow. this is the deal you just talked about. what happens when all of this rain, that's a puddle on the side

let me go to chad myers now. looking at how much of a mess this will be tomorrow. seems like the calm before the big storm is the feeling i'm picking up from our correspondent. is that an accurate assessment? >> the winds are in the 20, 25 mile per hour range. by tomorrow, because this storm is going to get deep, bigger, lower in pressure the winds are going to be 60, piers. this is the calm. it's going to be ugly by the time i talk to you tomorrow night. the winds are strong in some spots, raleigh, almost 70 degrees now and the winds out of the south but on the backside, the winds out of the north. we have a misery influx from flightaware.come, six cancellations. that means you're going to get where you're going, you're just not going to get where you're going on time. 81 airport delays in atlanta. chicago, 76 airport delays at that point. right now charlotte, not really a big hub but 62 delays going on there, mostly u.s. air and the last one would be houston at 58 airport delays. i've not seen a map in a long time, piers, that said 776 airport delays going on at

i want to get right to meteorologist chad myers in the cnn severe weather center. chad, break it to us gently. >> there's a low in the gulf of mexico down here. it is going to travel up across georgia and eventually run up the east coast. an awful lot like every storm of the century we have ever talked about. but this storm doesn't grab atlantic moisture. it's only grabbing gulf of mexico moisture. why does that matter? because that matters, all the big cities, d.c., raleigh, new york city, it's only going to rain. it's a rain event. don't think nothing happened. we're not expecting anything to happen there except wind. along the low, that's where the ice is going to be and then back out here is where the snow is going to be. you've got i-70, 64, 66, 75, so many interstates and 41 million people trying to go somewhere just over the next couple days. that's the issue. here's the rain now. it is going to travel up the east coast and much of it is going to fall on areas here in the midatlantic, tennessee, west virginia, southeastern ohio, pittsburgh and it's going to b

our chad myers has a look at what could happen when that satellite falls. >> reporter: remember backwn. we never saw it coming because it came from the direction of the sun and the telescopes were blinded by the light. this is different. this is gocha, a satellite launched by the european space agency in 2009. its job was to map the earth's gravational field. ironic, now gocha at more than 2500 pounds is drifting back to earth, expected to come crashing down soon. but exactly where is much less clear. on timing of impact, an official with the european space agency said concretely our best prediction is now for a reentry on sunday with a possibility for it slipping into early monday. it's easy to track satellites because they're close to the earth. affidavit roids are much harder to find and much more dangerous. the question is do we know where they all are? >> if it's really big, we know where they are, we know where the big ones are, the ones that would render us extinct or disrupt civilization as we know it. >> they're easy to track. there's an app for that. here are all the satell

i want to bring in chad myers. chad, another storm on the way, right? >> yeah, another minor storm. but nothing's minor when your house is in ruin. when everything is slammed on the ground. i mean, this wind, even if it's 35 or 40 miles per hour, is going to pick this stuff up again. this was a big deal. this is the storm surge problem we had with sandy. remember sandy, how much water got pushed up in the new york harbor? >> you can't forget it. we were there covering it. >> there's the storm six days ago. here's the country of the philippines. almost the same size here. so as you put this into motion, it came in and it slammed right through the island chain and the problem is obviously still going to be the wind, the waves, and talk about the wind of 195. that's equal to an ef-4 tornadoes. i was listening to somebody on the i witness report saying we had a tornado over our house for four hours. the wind never stopped. that's why everything looks like a tooth pick. >> you mention the winds, but it's the storm surge that becomes so deadly. >> let's get to that. let me show you someth

with that in mind, we have meteorologist chad myers in the cnn severe weather center. we are outside in pittsburgh in the snow. and martin savidge inside the busiest airport in the world in atlanta. chad, i want to start with you. a lot of people are reading the fine print on their airline refund policies right now. we have a full disclosure policy so please disclose how bad is it out there really? >> you know, we first saw some delays about 30 minutes ago at laguardia, maybe a 30-minute delay on every flight. this is what it looks like in atlanta right now. although not an official number like 15, 30, 45 minutes, at least half the planes have some small delay on them. so there's your visibility issue. the snow is all the way from new york down into pennsylvania and west virginia. south of there, it's all rain. this is going to stay rain. it's not going to be a snow maker for i-95. so it's going to stay at least semi-good. the deal is we have this low that's going to drive up the east coast, keep the east coast wet for the next at least 24 hours, and then very windy and

and now i want to bring in our meteorologist, chad myers, with the latest from the severe weather center. and some of those images we just saw in margaret's piece, pretty incredible when you just look at the sheer scale of the storm, right, chad? it keeps hanging around and it's causing problems. where is the worst of it? >> you know, considering this thing started and killed the first person in san francisco seven days ago, and now it's finally up here in the northeast, and the worst of it really is still new york city, boston, and all through the catskills, the poconos and so on. but think about where we are now is almost thinking about where you are, anyway. where the eye of a hurricane isn't very windy. that's where you are now. you're in the center of the low, but as that low goes by you, those winds are going to pick up tonight, probably almost 40 miles per hour. erin, 5,800 planes still in the sky right now. this is, they're just there. most of them are delayed. even though most of them, now the delays are 35 minutes. the delays did drop off in philadelphia. the flight board, dela

we're going to go back to chad myers for a quick update. is it going to be a tough night?think so. people will be delayed at least an hour, the road are getting icy, because the rain is turning over to snow. philadelphia just cleared its delay, saying we're okay, we're in good shape, until i looked at the flight board that you can get on your app., and it just says delayed, delayed, delayed, so i don't know where those delays are going, but obviously you're going to sit there for a while. it's snowing up there as well, probably up into maine back into new york city, and it's the snow changing over from the rain to the snow that's going to make some glaze on the roadways, probably the bridges first. there's enough that the roads are already wet. we'll get some ice on the roadways. the went is 38, the gusts in new york city, but the big question is, whether the balloons fly tomorrow? the gusts have to be less than 34 for snoopy to get up in the air. 31 is the forecast. all day yesterday, the forecast was 34. maybe they'll fly after all. >> the parade wouldn't be the same wit

let's check in with chad myers right now. he's got the latest on what's going on. ably the strongest storm i have ever seen in my 27-year career. 195 mile per hour sustained winds and gusts to 235. now, in this area of the world, they don't fly planes in like we do to see what it truly is. it's all satellite-based. but tremendous potential with this storm, not only in the winds around the eye like we had in andrew, but a tremendously wide storm like sandy coming together with waves offshore, i'm sure coming onshore now, because it is coming right on land here in the philippines, waves at 50 feet. if you push those waves on land, they will get higher than that. it's almost tsunami type waves hitting the eastern coast of the philippines. our reporter right there, the eye right there. he is 220 miles from the center of this very dangerous storm, and it is headed his way. we could see some very dramatic pictures in the hours to come. >> chad, it's heading towards really populated parts of the philippines, where hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people live. >> s

for that let's bring in meteorologist chad myers at the cnn severe weather center. chad, was this strongest storm ever recorded? >> we may never know. we may never know because there wasn't a wind anemometer that could withstand the wind. there's nothing that would stand up to 195 miles per hour. how we will look to see whether this was possibly bigger than camille or some of the other big storms on record was that we'll see how far things were thrown. that's exactly how forecasters go out and find how big a tornado was, how far did this car get picked up and thrown? i think one thing i heard today from one of the eyewitnesss said this was like a tornado over my house but it lasted for four hours. the wind never stopped. so super typhoon had haiyan. you may hear this thing called yolanda. that was the philippine name. they rename storms depending what country was. yolanda was used by the philippines, it's the same storm. camille at landfall was estimated at 190 and the labor day storm at 185. this is from dr. jeff masters, as we know right now, as we think, yes, this

i want to bring in chad myers at the cnn weather center, just to get a sense of where this approaching storm is and how bad it will be for the people here. how bad is it? >> you know, anderson i think it will be over in about six hours, the back edge of the storm, the problem as it passes by. the problem with the airplane, you were in instrument flight rules. there were no instruments on the ground to send signals. so suddenly you couldn't land because the instruments are not going to work because there is nothing transponding back up to you. you didn't have to go very far, couple of hundred miles, the signals were too low and they couldn't land for you. i do expect, though, probably in the next four or five hours, this is all over. i know we talked about an approaching storm here, but the approaching storm means leaving storm here in the next 12 hours. it will be gone, that is the good news. it will still rain for a while. doesn't matter how much or how little rain, if you're trying to recover your life with fresh food, water, and a roof over your head, any type of rain or wind is jus

i want to bring in chad myers. you just heard nick say tomorrow may be okay for some.ut then things could get worse again. where is the storm going? those images we just saw out of oklahoma, that suv spinning several times, where are we going to see that? >> that is pretty much gone. buff it's coming back tomorrow. the cold air that's come down from canada the past couple days is already in place. it's going to rain, and it's going to be 31 degrees. you can say how can it do that? because aloft, 5,000, 3,000 feet up, it's 35 degrees. it's going to rain down to a 31 degree where we are atmosphere. and it's going to freeze on contact. now this is not snowma geddon. this is a rain event. if you're traveling, you're going from rain to sleet to ice to snow. now those interstates are going to be affected one after the other. and even though new york may only get rain, dc, baltimore, the problem is it will be raining with a wind at around 30 to 40. so planes are still going to be delayed. cars are going to be okay. planes are going to be a mess. a little bit of light ice acro

chad myers is with me here. we're going to talk about this. here with me from tulsa, oklahoma. as far as we know, she's the only person on earth to have been hit by space debris. so lotti, let me begin with you. this happened in 1997? tell me about it. >> yes, we saw the rocket -- the remnants of it coming back, returning to earth. and i believe it malfunctioned that night. so that's the reason a small piece of it hit me. >> how small space junk hit you? how big? >> about the size of my hand. and it weighs a little less than an empty soda can. >> did it hurt? >> no. but it caught my attention. >> did you get to keep it? >> souvenir? >> yes, i did. >> chad, let me ask you, this european satellite, it is supposed to be dropping from the skies in a couple weeks. right? so what do we know. >> could be as early as sunday. >> as early as sunday? >> yeah, the irony is this satellite was put up to find the earth's gravitation, and now it's going to be drug to the ground by the gravitation itself. there's so much space junk up there, though. this is go

i want to begin with our meteorologist chad myers who's in the severe weather center tonight here at cnn. so chad, obviously you've been watching this storm when it came from the west in oklahoma. now it's in the east and in the south. when and where do you expect the worst? >> it is doing exactly what we thought. and very few storms ever do that. it is getting colder as the sun sets, and now our map is filling in with this pink, which is essentially an ice storm. it's sleet, it's rain, it's 31 degrees. it's ugly out there. we're talking that's catskills binghamton and all of central pennsylvania getting covered with ice at this hour. it's only 7:00. we have hours to go before the sun rises and it warms back up again. this entire area will be an icy mess by morning. so buffalo, central pennsylvania into west virginia, even here toward hagers town picking up ice at this point. that's where it's going to be the worst tonight. tomorrow the winds start to blow and airports are going to be -- this is going to be an ice event for planes already on the ground. we could see cancellations beca

chad myers, on anything that falls from the sky. new information. >> yeah, exactly.ose. this was a rock from space. not an iron meteorite that fell here in northern arizona. i went to visit this about, i don't know, six months ago. that's a big hole in northern arizona called the meteor crater. there is the road, come down from the interstate, drive herer get out in the parking lot everybody look at it you go, that's cool. this was tens of thousands of years ago. something like this that would hit a city or state, even unpopulated it would do a lot of damage. now scientists think there's more rocks like the one that did the damage in russia. maybe not so much of the iron meteorites that did the big hole but the one on the video, you can look at it over and over -- i can't get enough, it's amazing to look at -- this big, bright object coming out of the sky, exploding with the same power of 30 hiroshima bombs. only thing is, it exploded high in the sky, so the damage wasn't concentrated on the ground. 1200 people were hurt by this one rock in the sky as it exploded. an

let's get the latest from chad myers. >> we're expecting an awful lot of damage.ke you and i experienced in the not atlantic basin at all. 195 mile per hour hurricane, which is essentially like a category four, f 4 tornado about 15 miles wide. going straight across the country right now. and then f 3, f 2, f 1 winds like a tornado but this is a hurricane. the center of the hurricane, strong winds, low pressure and of course, an awful lot of rainfall that could cause flooding. it is likely now, it is claimed now that this is probably, we're going to have to go through and figure it out, this is probably the biggest storm to ever hit land. there probably have to be storms over the ocean bigger, we just didn't see them or fly into them. we don't know how big this truly is because there are no planes that fly into it. they don't fly planes into storms like we do here in america. i don't think i want to be in a plane wind doing 195 and gusts 235. the next stop is probably the north china sea and then eventual eventually, south china sea right into vietnam, that's the n
