chad myers is out front. e helm, why is it so dangerous? >> big currents in both directions, depending if we're going to low tide or high tide. major seven mile per hour this way or this way, and unless you know whether or not you have flat tide going to high or going to low, you may not know the direction of the current. this is a funnel. you're washing your car, have a hose, put your thumb on the end of the hose, that's what we have here. here's where the channel for main ships should be, but put your thumb on the hose is right through there and that's where they were. that is 6.6 knots, do the multiplication, that's over 7 miles per hour that direction and that direction. now it's not a difficult channel. it's been used for years and years and years, and we don't even think there's anything shallow enough because it's been used for so many years to cause any obstruction here. even some of the noaa charts say rocks, but we're talking 100 feet below the surface. >> that's incredible. we're going to be talking

meteorologist chad myers. what an awful story. what kind of conditions are these climbers facing? >> 10 degrees right now, fahrenheit, winds at about 15 to 20 miles per hour. not great. these ice falls, they're avalanches -- we think of avalanches as snow coming down. these are honestly pieces of glacier, pieces of ice falling from high above these guys, right at the kumba ice fall. that's why it's called an ice fall, because ice falls there. it's been happening all week long. this is the first time people actually got in the way of these ice falls. they're putting ropes up so the climbers eventually in may can make their way up. they're bringing food and medicine and supplies up to these other camps so that when the climbers finally start going in that direction, there will be supplies for them. here's the khumba glacier, here's the khumba icefall, as we move up to camp. the steepness of these -- i did not change these at all, straight out of google earth digital globe, this is how steep the sides of the mountains are. as you slide up here, called popcorn, called khumbu icefall,
