cnn meteorologist chad myers here to discuss.> this should be mid-july, certainly not mid-june. we're a month ahead of where we should be all across the west and the deep south, of course, this is where the worst weather is, 80 plus possible heat records, broke a couple yesterday, excessive heat warnings all the way from new orleans all the way back to new mexico and all the way down to the rio grand. san antonio is going to feel like 105 without the humidity and then you add the humidity in, and it will feel even worse. look at corpus christi. in the heat and sun it could feel like 120. even for dallas, it's going to feel like 116. so these are heat and humidity numbers here, not thermometer numbers where you're sitting in the shade, but all of the numbers that i'm showing you are in the shade. you multiply that by a little bit if you're sitting in the sunshine or working in the sunshine across all of texas. this is making a couple more things go on here. tornadoes and severe weather across the deep south where the very hot air

we want to get to cnn meteorologist chad myers, who's been tracking all of this for us. how long are you expecting this smoke to be out over the midwest? >> well, today will be the worst day. tomorrow gets a little bit better because we're going to have some thunderstorms and that upward motion and the mixing of the raindrops in the atmosphere will kind of wash at least some of the smoke away tomorrow. and then friday it really begins to go down. i don't think we'll get anybody above 100 parts per million there. but right now it is a real mess. now, the white stuff you see here, this is all cloud cover. white on the east coast and in the middle part of the country. but it's this gray right through indiana where things have been canceled, sporting events canceled, all the way through detroit, into cleveland. and it is just a mess all the way from pittsburgh to the west. this is a live picture from earth cam of cleveland. here's what it looked like two days ago. here's what this camera should look like. you should see the lake. you should see downtown. but not right now. it

cnn meteorologist chad myers has that. >> well, we really switched now from severe weather to very hot weather. don't get me wrong, there will be some big storms around the areas here, across parts of texas, oklahoma, and even across the deep south on saturday. but it's the heat that will affect for people for sure. temperatures are going to be well above 100. when you add in the humidity, it will be a very muggy day. heat indexes will approach 115 degrees here. that's fahrenheit, of course. but 100 degrees in san antonio. 109 in laredo. muggy air all the way even into dallas. even new orleans may feel 110 to 115. excessive heat warnings posted here across parts of texas. air conditioners will be rolling. this will be a very difficult weekend to be outside, and it doesn't end by the weekend. it doesn't end until thursday. look at your temperatures for houston, for san antonio. dallas a little bit cooler but still the muggies are up there without a doubt. then for houston itself, 103 on the thermometer with the mugginess there feeling like 110 to 115 outside. and that's in the shade. so

our meteorologist chad myers has the latest forecast from the cnn weather center. update our viewers. >> it is better in the midwest than the ohio valley today. not so good yet in buffalo and toronto and now worse in new york city down to philadelphia and really into baltimore as well. numbers above 150 for your parts per million. so still air quality alerts out there. be careful as you spend time outside. but there will be rain, there will be some fronts, there will be some cold air coming out of some of these thunderstorms that will try to push the air away, the smoke away by at least sunday into monday. excessive heat warnings, though, now in two places for your weekend across the deep south. and the first real heat wave of the year for the west. temperatures are going to be very hot in the west as well. hot and humid in the south where temperatures are going to make a run at 100, but look at sacramento. sacramento you're going to be 109. las vegas, you're going to be around 110. and of course death valley, people visit. they don't really live there. but 120 mile

chad myers is joining me now. chad, big question, find it, right?re trying to do. and now they are throwing what they can at it and the signals seem to be the best clue they have at this point. sad fact of the matter is that recovery would be a different task entirely. what do we know? >> it certainly would be. you have to think about even if they found it and they could hook it up to something, that is 12,000 feet of cable. you have to get that 12,000 feet of cable to the bottom and then a reel up to the top. there are so many unknowns here. really i think what has happened, best thing that has happened over the past 96 hours really is that the weather hasn't been too bad. 3 to 6 foot swells. not talking about the sharp waves that you see on lakes. these are the ocean swells. even though there are a couple clouds out there, there is no real big change or system there. we know the temperature is somewhere between 55 and 60 degrees. closer you get to down here into the warmer temperatures, the brighter colors, that is where the warmer water is. now,

meteorologist chad myers is in the cnn weather center. runt yesterday, the northeast and even parts of the mid-atlantic bearing it today. >> i know, and right now i have behind me pittsburgh, pennsylvania. the parts per million in pittsburgh now, 230. that's unhealthy for anybody to be out there at this point in time. here in atlanta, our number is 130. but inside the building, i bought this on amazon, like $20, it will tell me what my number is inside. i know that's hard for you to read, but it's 14. that's like ten times less air product quality here outside than here. so we're ten times better air inside than what you expect, and that's exactly how that's going to go. this is what pittsburgh looks like right now, and it is going to look like that for a while. there's major, major weather, though, rolling through illinois right now. and that's pushing a lot of this smoke away. we have a live picture from chicago right now. a little bit better, especially to your southwest. this big event, this big, severe thunderstorm event rolling throu

. >>> for the latest forecast, let's bring in meteorologist chad myers. weather center. what are you seeing right now? >> we have big storms in parts of virginia and maryland right now. a couple across alabama and into colorado. yesterday, 13 tornadoes on the ground. one in michigan, three in ohio, one in florida and in alabama and, of course, texas and oklahoma. the texas storm that did hit was now rated as an ef-2. that's up to 135 miles per hour. they continue looking at it to see if they see any stronger winds than that. for some reference, because i did someone say they didn't hear any sirens, the warning was put out four minutes before the town was actually hit. four minutes. that's how quickly the storm spun up. the radar caught it. the weather service did put out the warning. for some people, that was just too late. didn't have time to go anywhere. four minutes from a severe thunderstorm to a tornado on the ground. that's why you need to be so diligent when you hear some kind of a warning, if your phone goes off, it's time to move now. there's the

cnn's chad myers moderated all of this from the weather center. chad, what's the latest from there?d a tornado on the ground likely an ohio. we had damage in michigan, in the area we are talking about where that tornado was on the ground, was texas. yes, perryton, texas, and this tornado did a lot of damage to any fragile structures. a lot of mobile homes. a lot of aluminum framed houses and things like that. this is the video that we are seeing. this is the stovepipe tornado that was caught on camera a couple of storm chasers out there, very brave, stop their cars, helped people right away, they saw how much damage was actually out there and how many people needed help. first responders coming in from all over the northern part of the texas panhandle. this isn't over. this is the area we are talking about. even though we are getting into nightfall, we still have the energy in the atmosphere. it's hot out there. it's still in the 80s and 90s out here. it's the energy that the storms will use to make more tornadoes likely tonight. if you hear a warning, if you hear a siren, if the al

meteorologist chad myers is with us now. he's tracking this hazardous smoke. when people open their weather apps on their smartphones and they see air quality numbers at 300 or higher, what does that mean? >> that means hazardous. that means you really need to be inside. it doesn't matter if you're a sensitive group or not. that is for everyone. and i did see some numbers that were approaching 300. even some over 400 on our map. so the number we have in atlanta right now is 70 outside. the number that i have in the studio on this pm 2.5 detector is 5. so that's 12 times better than what it is outside. that's why they say to stay inside. the air filters in your house just kind of all help out. watch me light one map and watch this because this goes quick. i'm going to light one map and put this smoke near this detector and watch where it goes. it just starts jumping and going and going. and all of a sudden it will peg. 999. that's as high as it goes. there's not a one, so we can't get over 1,000. but that's from one match. and that's what these numbers mean. ove

and cnn meteorologist chad myers is in the weather center.smoke's path for this. we are going to begin the hour in philadelphia with our danny freeman. he's just across the river there in camden, new jersey, with a very nice view. what are you seeing there? what are you experiencing? >> reporter: yeah, nice view, i guess is a little subjective when things still look as hazy as they do back here. listen, the reality is here in philadelphia that it is better than it was when it comes to air quality overnight and the early hours of this morning. it was really bad, we were this that hazardous zone. now we're in that unhealthy to very unhealthy stage right now. the reality is, i told you earlier that there was a press conference in the 1:00 hour by the city of philadelphia, and our health commissioner said clearly the city continues to experience serious air quality problems. and the thing that was mentioned and emphasized in that press conference is the air quality has fluctuated a lot over the past 24 hours, and we should expect the same in the

chad myers has more from the cnn weather center. >> this is what it looked like on thursday in washington00, i think, at times. and all of a sudden on friday, the air cleared up. the wasn't came through and really cleared things out. the numbers were down into the 50 range. so that is some good news. now this is a model of where the wildfire smoke is now. most of it has been pushed offshore. that's why those pictures look so much better. there's still smoke in the air, but our numbers will not get to the hazardous category. probably unhealthy for sensitive groups all through the the weekend, but we have relief on the way. not only relief from the smoke, real relief with a low pressure system that's going to rotate around the great lakes with wind and rain. but some relief for the fire fighting effort as well. there will be many areas here that will pick up more than an inch of rain over the next three days. that will certainly do quite a bit to help those fire fighting efforts out. >> still ahead, historic night on the court during game four of the nba finals. andy scholes joins me live t

meteorologist chad myers has more from the cnn weather center here in atlanta. >> a few headlines forurday. rain in the east. big storms, severe weather in the middle part of the country and also extremely hot weather still stuck in texas. here's what the radar is going to look like according to the computer models with storms in iowa and then moving off to the east. some of them will be severe, again on your saturday. then for sunday, some of the severe weather may move into kentucky and then eventually the carolinas for monday into the beginning of next week. here's what your saturday looks like, though. the risk of severe weather right centered over des moines all the way down really from northern minnesota all the way down even into arkansas with the potential for that weather to pop up. there will be some heavier rainfall as well in the yellow. that's two inches of rain or more. there are some orange spots in there, which is four inches of rain. excessive rainfall possible with the flash flood threat there for the middle part of the country. now, the second part of this. all the

chad myers has more on the dangerous weather impacting the country. >> quite a few severe weather report from virginia down to the gulf coast. most severe along the gulf coast itself with tornadoes reported down there. some hitting some towns with damage town there. also another event very, very heavy rainfall, 6 to 10 inches of rain fell in a short period of time with flash flood emergencies in effect. this is what the computer thinks that the rainfall is going to look like throughout the day on tuesday, taking you all the way to wednesday. notice what happens tuesday afternoon. big storms could be rolling right through new orleans, this is kind of the biggest threat that i see here. some of those storms could also be severe with heavy rainfall, wind and even some hail, so if it falls on the same places that already saw the heavy rainfall, there could be more flash flooding in the forecast and also that rainfall will be heading up the east coast up into charlotte, up the hills, up the appalachian chain. and all the rainfall will be here along and east of that upslope flow of that mounta

the latest now from chad myers. >> big high pressure in the central plains finally giving up some of its grip and pushing a lot of that heat off to the east in places like mobile, into birmingham, new orleans, where the excessive heat warnings are sliding off to the east and away from texas where all the massive heat has been. look along the gulf coast, this is muggy down here. a lot of humidity in the air. it will feel like 110 to 115 degrees in some places. and remember the numbers you see here and the heat index you might see on your tv or somewhere else, those numbers are in the shade. when you get out in the sunshine, it will feel even warmer than that. dallas finally down below 100 for a high on saturday. only 97. something else going on great lakes and ohio valley, all the smoke from the wildfires making another approach to this area here. had the same kind of idea about three or four weeks ago where the smoke was very intense in the eastern part of the united states especially the northeast. and this is what it looks like. clouds to the east, clouds to the west, those are the

meteorologist chad myers is tracking it all. which states are in danger today?eorgia and the northern half of florida. we had a tornado that rolled through moss point, mississippi, a half hour ago. it wasn't like the pictures you showed there. this is a tornado that has this whole town in a standstill. that's going to be the story for the rest of the night in this yellow area. there's a potential for another tornado or two. maybe not large ones, and that's great. it's right along the gulf coast where the humidity is, flooding has been. flood emergency from almost -- that's about pensacola all the way back over to just about orange beach. that's where the flooding is going on right now. there's still more rain coming down. the heaviest rain is moving into the gulf of mexico and away from where it has already fallen, south of fair hope and towards folly, alabama. the next couple days more rainfall to come and excessive accumulations in some places too, jake. >> chad, texas is experiencing record triple-digit heat. how hot is it going to get there? >> it's going to

chad myers has the latest. >> reporter: what a day it was on thursday across parts of north america with at least seven tornados reported. this is an area across parts of oklahoma and texas that widely scattered people, these towns are 20 kilometers apart, ten miles apart before we see from one down to the next. and on a day like today, we just hope that those tornadoes miss all those towns and today is not one of those days. also with the hail that came a down, some of it 4 inches in diameter. you look at that and you go that is 10 centimeters, that is a big hail stone hitting your roof or car. there will be more weather for you for tomorrow kind of sliding across from the northwest to the southeast almost in the same areas. this is an area we're mostly concerned with. other than that really there is going to be an awful lot of rainfall as well. some spots are lick up enough rain that could make flash flooding, that is the next risk in the southeast. >> and brian, a storm chaiser, s calling in. thank you for joining us. talk us through what you saw there in terms of damage. >> yeah, whe

let's bring in chad myers in the cnn weather center. w bad is this in. >> i think it's probably going to look at an ef-3, so into the major category for sure. now, a lot of the damage that i've seen today, aluminum siding, shingles, but there were mobile homes that were completely destroyed. and i know 100 mile per hour wind gusts can do that, but there were also big structures that were brick built, stick built that also really received quite a bit of damage. we'll see. weather service has to go out. what's really interesting i think today, too, not only the perryton tornado, there was damage in michigan. there was a tornado on the ground not that far from sandusky, ohio. just about 30 minutes ago there was a tornado on the ground south of pensacola, florida, near the shore. and all of the tornados that were 1,000 miles or more to the west. so what a violent, violent day we had today. now, the tornado threat is beginning to diminish, but the hail threat and the wind threat is not over yet for tonight. we are still going to have that thr

brian, if you can hold for just one second chad myers our chief weather castor, our meteorologist wantsask you a question. go ahead chad. >> brian, i watched your video live on youtube. obviously you are streaming the entire event and i noticed that you put the drone up and got the pictures and you are a reporter for a bit for a few seconds. but then all of sudden you turned into a first responder. describe to our viewers how this happens all the time when chasers chased to a town and the town is hit, they stopped chasing and they start responding. >> there's nothing really else that you can do. when you see a town -- i know what those moments are like and i know, in a normal situation, a first responder crews go to where they need to go. but in a situation like this, you know, the town is basically on its own for a while. there aren't too many things to respond to at once and so anything that i can do to help, which even includes showing the area and the country how bad it is so the necessary resources can come in. and by later today they were starting to get those resources. people ri

chad myers has been looking at why the smoke is so dangerous and to illustrate the point, he ran a little experiment. have a look. >> so much smoke in the eastern part of the united states irks eas, eastern canada from fires. we still have the smoke from british columbia and alberta. and this is a pm 2.5 teedetecto this tells us how many particles are in the air. and in the studio, there is five. outside it said 70. so 70 parts in the air outside. it is better to be inside if you are looking at five compared to 70 and that is why they say please go indoors or of course wear a mask. but watch what happens to this, this is my own personal 2.5 detector. i'm going to light a match, i'll put it out, and i'll blow a little bit of smoke. just a little bit from one match. and watch what happens to the numbers here. from 100 to 300 and higher, it probably ends up somewhere 999 if it pegs all the way out. but this is the stuff that you are breathing in, this fine, fine particles that are in the air. so let's get to it, where is the air quality bad. well, still bad all up and down i-95 in the easter

chad myers joins us now live.re you expecting this wave of smoke to spread across the midwest? >> certainly it doesn't get better today and tomorrow. you can see that there's not a cloud in the sky between chicago and cleveland but you can't see the ground because this is the smoke that the satellite is seeing right now. cleveland, ohio, this is what it looked like two days ago. looking across to downtown. now i take you to what it looks like live. and i know it's live because i've seen birds fly through the picture but that's because they're less than a mile and a quarter away because that is the visibility right now in cleveland. when i'm looking at these purple air numbers, you can look at them online. one of the worst places is granger township in, around cleveland. 328 parts per million is your number right now. that is certainly hazardous for you to be breathing out there. i had a meter last time we did this. the meter here in atlanta was 80 parts per million outside but it was six on the inside so a 12 fold
