before she came to charleston and addressed the state. and if you remember, she went to all nine of the funerals. so i started thinking, well, how does that not affect her children the next time they go to church or how does that not affect her and the people all around her for the rest of her life? i remember talking with a police lieutenant, and i think i'll read, if we have time, a passage that regards this moment when there was a police lieutenant who went and dug through the bloodied trash through the crime scene to get felicia sanders her bible back because it meant that much to felicia to have it again. how does that not change that police lieutenant's life, the rest of her life? or i remember speaking with the jurors. the jurors committed themselves to handing out justice in this case, but that meant sitting through the weeks-long trial that was very grueling, and they got to see the crime scene photos. now, i'm hear to tell you, they will not ever forget those crime scene photos, and neither will i, and neither will anybody else

i was involved in a charleston county council election, and right before the voting rights act there was an article that interviewed all of the council members of charleston, south carolina, and they said, it is quoted in the paper, we really like ward elections, it gives us contact with the people and we're closer to them. then you have the voting rights act comes about, two years later, charleston goes to at large elections. blacks begin to register to vote. i looked at the state of south carolina. about three-fourths of all counties changed to at large elections. elections following voting rights act. is that a coincidence? that's what they do in the court cases. it gets trickier in this case. in the school board, jenkins, great civil rights leader from south carolina. drove a bus and doesn't get the credit he deserves. it's really his idea of getting this going. and he ran for the school board on johns island. he didn't win. he came in third, but he did come in before one white person. next year, following that election, what do they do? they change that some school boards will b
