i want to take you straight to charlottesville, virginia.nator creigh deeds and his deceased son gus. >> the cousin was driving along the highway there, stopped, picked up senator deeds, and drove him to his residence. rescue responded to that residence and attended to the senator. senator deeds was then transported by ambulance to a nearby relative's farm where life guard 12 out of rock bridge county was able to land and transport the injured senator to the university of virginia medical center in charlottesville for treatment. the senator is still at the hospital at this time. i just received an update about 40 minutes ago, and he is listed in fair condition. his son gus deeds was found inside the residence suffering from life-threatening injuries associated with a gunshot wound. despite the troopers' and first responders' efforts, he did die at the scene. his remains were transported later today to the office of the medical examiner in roanoke for autopsy and examination. the investigation is still ongoing. we still have investigators at

the senator was later air lifted to a charlottesville hospital where police say he was able to speakh them. by the time police arrived in the senator's home, his son gus was still alive but suffering from what police describe as a self-inflicted gunshot wound. he died at the scene. this nightmare, a jarring tragedy, especially in the wake of the senator's recent campa n campaigns where his son was often seen by his side. virginia senator peterson, a long-time friend remembers campaigning alongside the father/son duo. >> gus was his driver. they traveled together. i know as a father he had a lot of concerns about his son. just issues involving dropping out of school and things of that nature. >> reporter: gus was a music major at william & mary. officials say in the last month he left the school. the richmond times dispatch is reporting that gus deeds was sent to bath county hospital for an emergency mental evaluation. he was released the day before the altercation because a bed was not available. creigh deeds is well known in virginia politics. in his unsuccessful bid to be governor

cnn's chris lawrence is joining us from charlottesville where police have just released more information on what happened. what's the latest you're hearing, chris? >> reporter: well, the latest is that police are now looking into this solely as an attempted murder. basically, this was a man who just a few years ago was running for the governor of virginia with his son by his side. and police now say it was that man and his son who were just the two of them in the house when a violent altercation erupted. it left his son shot dead, one bullet, police now say one shot was fired. they believe that was the suicide. the father, creigh deeds, was stabbed multiple times, up in his upper chest, in his head area, and police now say he was able to walk down a hill, the house is set well back from the road, that he walked down about 75 yards down that hill to the main road, where his cousin was passing by, his cousin picked him up, brought him to his home, and that's where he called 911. the police came, airlifted him to the hospital. right now, investigators say they are not looking for any other
