reporting live, cheryl hurd, nbc bay area news. >> cheryl, thank you. this story has been unfolding throughout the day. here is the timeline for you. 911 calls came from inside the school, just about 10:30 this morning. a little before 10:30. police and s.w.a.t. arrived on the scene shortly after. and a tiny christian university, right there in oakland. not very well known. also a, also, a nursing school as well. by 11:30. several buildings in the area were on lockdown including oakland tribune building in the immediate area. dozens were evacuated. some of the students running out with their arms raised so officers wouldn't confuse them with the gunman. at least four were taken to the highland hospital. right away. the suspect was arrested five miles away in an alameda shopping center. >> chief investigator, uncovering information on the background of the shoot s suspect. let's go to marianne favro live at the shopping center where he was arrested, surrendered and was arrested. marianne tell us how it unfolded? >> here at the safeway on spark street, fi

reporting live in oakland, i'm cheryl hurd, nbc bay area news. >> cheryl, thank you.heroic for a 19-year-old kaur at highland hospital walking away just a short time ago. our investigative unit has uncovered critical information about the suspected gunman. tony joins us. what do we know at this point about this man? >> reporter: raj, oakland's police chief confirmed the shooter's identity. we first reported to you at 5:00 tonight. at this hour the oakland police department remaining without a whole lot of details about the shooter but here is what we know. the suspecteded shooter is 43-year-old one l.goh, a former nursing student. police investigators are working leads that the suspect may have purchased a .45 caliber gun last week at a gun shop. now we've learned more about the suspect in just the past half hour. public records show he has lived in the virginia area off and on for the past decade. public records also show a 2009 tax lien by the irs totaling $9,139. now in virginia he has two minor traffic offenses and received hunting and fishing licenses in 2006, 20

cheryl hurd shows us how changing individual lives is changing the fabric of an entire neighborhood. >> when you think of east palo alto, you often think of crime and violence. but when miguel thinks of the city he lives in, he says he dreams of opportunity. >> my dream is to study medicine. >> reporter: that might sound like a fairy tale ending to a feel-good story. but this young man's life is full of major obstacles. his family immigrated here from mexico. at age 12, he had to make an adult decision to come back to the states without his mother or father. >> and although i didn't want to leave and i wanted to stay there for him, we knew that an education was going to get me out of it, basically. >> reporter: he had to grow up fast. living with relatives that really didn't need another mouth to feed, was hard. >> i honestly thought about selling drugs, to be honest, because well it seemed like the easiest way to get money at the time. >> a year and a half ago, he heard about a job at one east palo alto, an outreach center for youth. the program started back in 2005. the whole idea

cheryl. what can you offer an author in this new area, which also suggest the authors are going to be doing different names now than in the time in the past. >> well, i think because i've actually worked that one of the big six, but now i run a small price, i think one of the things that is a small press publisher is able to do that was always harder at the big six is to really focus the marketing and advertising an understanding of our market. i think often even with the best of intentions if you don't have experience in the community really have a sense of who the market is. and again, there is no one single black illegal temperament. you know, there's no one single religious experience. we are heterogeneous people and i think sometimes that lurcher publishing enterprises, they really don't have the same level of connections, so it's harder for them to use some of the marketing opportunities available. i think one of the reasons that it's exciting for me is to work with authors and to devel
