former governor chet culver signed the law in 2010. it makes it illegal for people who've committed domestic violence- related misdemeanors to own guns. a well known republican in the iowa senate says he'll support a bill to end medicaid privatization in the state. senator david johnson revealed that during a subcommittee hearing this afternoon. senate study bill 30-81 would order the department of health and human services to terminate contracts with the three companies scheduled to take over the medicaid program. for now, the state is scheduled to transition to privatized care in less than a month, on march first. the transition was supposed to happen january 1st, but federal regulators said the state needed more time to sign-up the more than half a million iowans on medicaid. iowa governor terry branstad privatization will help cut the rising price tag for medicaid. the administration said costs are expected to grow 21 percent over the next three years. the state currently spends more than 4.2 billion dollars each year on medicaid.
