chevron is agreeing to pay millions of dollars in fines following allegations of pollution laws. pete joins us from the refinery with how it could impact the folks that live in that area. good morning, pete. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, laura. this is going to effectively resolve some investigations into chevron, including that refinery fire that took place right here in richmond back in 2012. we'll jump into the agreement details we're getting from federal officials. this is coming from the u.s. department of justice. it says chevron will pay roughly a $3 million fine just over $160 million they'll spend over $160 on environmental improvements to its refineries, including right here in richmond. when it comes to that fine, it will resolve some regulatory investigations that were for chevron in four states, including right here in richmond, including that 2012 richmond refinery fire that if folks remember, evacuated roughly 14,000 residents in the area. i want to point out that in 2013, chevron did pay $2 million in fines for folks affected in that 2012 fire. also when

that fire spread to an underground fault that houses a section of this pipeline that's run by chevron. there's a 12-inch pipeline, and a smaller pipeline. the fire protection district right now is running on the theory it's the pauler pipeline that is burning, still burning and they can't get in there to turn it off, and that's putting the bigger line at i risk the 12-inch high pressure transmission line. they said chevron has isolated the 12-inch line from the main system, putting in inert gas there, and they'll purge the rest of the gaus out, and once they can do that which could take two to three hours, then they'll have a safe situation that would allow people back in their homes. that's what they're working on right now. whether they do the purge, you might hear a loud sound like the sound of a jet engine at the pipeline facility, or a loud shrieking sound. if you hear that, police don't call 911. >> good warning to people there. it should be loud. thank glue if you have our smartphone app, you might have woke up to alerts. we have sent out updates through the night. the app is f
