chp oakland in a chp golden gate division investigating this deadly freeway shooting that happened at 4.30 yesterday on 5.80, west on the macarthur maze before the toll plaza to the bay bridge. the shooter fired a gun into the personal car of this recruit that this deputy recruit. >> hitting him and causing him to crash into a guardrail when officers arrived. they had no idea if you work for alameda county sheriff's office. of course, they're just doing their job, got him to the hospital immediately. but unfortunately he died later from his injuries was until later. they found out that he was a part of the sheriff's academy and they have not released his name because they are giving the family some time and some privacy. we did talk with sergeant nelson with the sheriff's office. we caught up with him on the phone last night. take a listen. >> i don't know. watch what led up to other than it just seems like another senseless act of violence on a freeway. reach us notify your family. and as you can imagine, there are distraught. we're going to give a little bit of time grieve and proce

the chp shared a photo with us of officers arresting the 41- year-old berkeley resident. on tuesday, officers pulled behind a sport utility vehicle on the highway 17 shoulder near glenwood avenue. according to the chp, the female driver made chase, and made the male passenger start shooting at officers. yesterday morning, the chp arrested the suspected shooter after he was spotted walking alongside highway 17. the suspect, who was from the central valley, is now facing attempted murder charges. >>> a man wanted in a new year's eve shooting at the sun valley mall in concord has died of his injuries. police have also made an arrest in this case. on new year's eve, thieves carrieout robbery on the lower level of the mall. it was a good samaritan who was trying to help a robbery victim when the suspect shot him. the incident prompted the mall to go on lockdown. >>> the nfc championship game between the 49ers and rams, and for fans looking for last- minute tickets, beware they are becoming targets for scammers. that is what some fans are facing is able to make the trip to sofi

this video shows a chp helicopter getting ready to land on highway 1 16 and sonoma county along lush green fields. the view from the sky, though, transformed into a horrific scene. this is what's left of a cadillac that crashed on the highway near walmart road. a 16 year old boy riding in the cadillac was killed. so there was one fatality. i believe at the moment. we have two other major injuries visible in the mangled wreckage, a child safety seat. there was apparently no small child, though. in the car, csp sergeant cruz korea said the cadillac had been heading west on the highway at about 11 15 sunday morning, weaving in and out of traffic. it was reported as driving recklessly crossing over solid double yellow lines, passing other vehicles that were traveling westbound. the cadillac then crashed into and ricocheted off an oncoming car. that vehicle collided with the first vehicle, which was traveling eastbound that caused a chain reaction that involves a total of four vehicles. the chp determined that the driver of the cadillac 24 year old genesis alexander of nevada, was under t

chp shut down 580 in castro valley. here's a picture of the scene there. nobody on it. see one police vehicle there behind another one. here's a closer look at the scene. chp says they shut down traffic for a possible bomb scare. turned out to be unfounded. officers reopened the freeway after about two and a half hours. that's because drivers also had to deal with this earlier in the day. a crash caused a pickup truck to go through a fence in the center divide and partially onto b.a.r.t. tracks. this is the exact same area as the bomb scare just hours apart. b.a.r.t. had to shut down service, and some lanes were closed while crews cleared the area. train service didn't resume until around 1:30 this afternoon. >>> continuing to climb. today the number of covid infections in the u.s. exceeded 74 million. the milestone comes as millions of home tests are arriving in the mail across the country. the case count reached 73 million three days ago signaling a slight slowdown. in the meantime, they finally arrived today. three n95 masks from the federal government were stocked u

the chp has shut down highway 1. crews across monterey county are on the scene, hundreds of acres are burned. >>> a fifth person from the bay area has been arrested in connection with the january 6th attack on the u.s. capitol. 52-year-old kenneth armstrong has been charged with four federal offenses. they include trespassing and disorderly conduct and picketting at the capitol. he faces a one year in jail and $100,000 fines if convicted. he was arrested the thursday and he's now out on $10,000 bond. >>> we are getting more information about the deadly shooting in san jose's rose garden neighborhood. san jose police say the man shae shot and killed was a wanted felon who fired at officers first. 32-year-old robert seth carter had five felony arrest warrants and was on probation for battery when he stole a car in san jose on wednesday. the police helicopter picked up surveillance and followed the stolen car into santa clara and back into the rose garden area. carter opened fire at several officers. they released these

the chp will continue its maximum enforcement period through tomorrow night. the new year means new laws. california cities have more local control over how speed limits are set to it using an old rule that essentially caused speed limits to go up every few years. a new police decertification law will present officers accused of law enforcement -- the minimum wage increases to $15 an hour for businesses with 26 or more employees. restaurants and bars can no longer deliver cocktails, but you can still get them to go that includes beer and wine, for five more years. under another new law, all california residents and businesses are required to separate food scraps from the rest of the trash. every city will have a different compost program and there is already one in san francisco. some garbage companies will provide separate bins, others will ask you to add food scraps to the greenways to been. -- green waste bin. violators could face fined up to $100 starting in 2024. those are just some of the new laws for california in 2022. you can find a full list on our w

and that is being investigated by chp. um, and it's just been an awful day. for us. my understanding is that he had just left classes at the alameda county sheriff's office. correct right? they were in class today, and we believe that he was driving home towards san francisco. and something happened that caused somebody to fire a bullet into his car and kill him and it's just awful. was he in uniform was the vehicle he was in marked? no he's in his our recruits leave the academy every day in their own civilian clothes. they drive their own cars to and from the academy. he was scheduled to graduate. in february. he's passed everything up to this point. and he gets killed and essentials murder. it's just unbelievable. any indication whether he was targeted anybody arrested no. there have been no arrests, and this is being investigated by the california highway patrol as it occurred on the freeway. clearly we're going to help them in any way possible, and i'm sure we'll get help from the oakland police department as well to try to figure out what happened today. we saw
