i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. a gift card starts at the rack in the store because that's where many criminals start. before you buy a card, look for tampering. some scammers mess with the barcode. you can feel the sticker. it has a little bit of a ridge on it. former police officer michelle loss spotted a tampered card and made a viral video on tiktok. here's the scam. that barcode sticker is for a different gift card that the thief has, so any money you load onto that card would actually land on the thief's card. so look for a sticker. take that extra seconds and just kind of feel it. look at it, visually inspect it. you can choose a gift card with extra security. some of them let you set up a pin, especially those used anywhere kind. that might make it tougher for the bad guys to drain your balance. after you get a gift card, use it asap because other criminals are hacking to try to drain your balance. there are groups out there that this is all they do, so use your gift card as soon as possible. here's another
