chris cillizza, where are we when john mccain is standing up to go against ted cruz? >> well, you know, andrea, it's the worth kept secret in washington that john mccain and ted cruz are not going to get together for dinner any time soon. remember that john mccain referred to ted cruz as whacko birds a few months ago. john mccain is a very different vision of how the republican party should be the loyal opposition than does ted cruz. i would note that you played ted cruz saying he's not mr. cleej yalty. i would say 75% to 80% of the rhetoric in that 21 hours and 19 minutes was devoted to calling out republicans. ted cruz praised people like bernie sanders, the independent who caucuses with democrats for his filibuster. he said he understood why harry reid was doing what he was doing. he understood why democrats were taking the approach they took to obama care. he really saved kind of the rhetoric for his own side. why weren't more republicans there? he called some of the procedural votes that republicans had advocated for fake and phony. he knew what he was doing, and

mccain, bob corker sort of on one side. barrasso, the more conservative republicans. picked up some more liberal voices. chris miurphy coming up against this hard core. a very skeptical group of lawmakers. 50/50 at best. most likely a week away from a vote. >> that's what they're telling me at this point. even in the senate, there are some questions about how this vote's going to fall out. at the end of the day, precedent tells us the votes will probably be there. the administration at this point still has work to do. especially among democrats who say, you know, hey, i wasn't elected to go to war. and there's a significant push for the president to do some sort of oval office-style address. where he sits down and explains to the american people, why are we doing this? the calls that are coming into these offices are just overwhelmingly negative. they're getting thousands of calls. no one is calling and saying, hey, yes, i think we should go into syria. >> the moral imperative calls. you raise a good point. which is the fact we've heard on the hill is we get all these calls against it, against it, against it.

john mccain, jeff flake, bob corker from tennessee voted for. you can see chris murphy from connecticut and tom from new mexico voted no. there was also one democrat, ed markey who said he'll make up his mind later. the resolution put in limits. no ground troops. 90-day limit with one possible 30-day extension. that was step two on the path to a military strike. it takes us into this weekend. it takes us to where we are right now. yesterday harry reid formally filed the resolution for the full senate to consider. that was a simple procedural step and it sets up a series of critical senate votes next week. also next week on tuesday, president obama will address the nation likely in prime time to build pressure on members of congress to vote with him or lessen the pressure on those members of congress to vote against him. this sets up step three which will come next wednesday in the senate. the question there is will there be a filibuster? will opponents of military action try to block the resolution from coming to a vote? rand paul, the same rand paul who waged a
