host: joining us representative chris smith of new jersey. a representative of the fourth district of new jersey, good morning. even though congress is out a hearing today taking a look at ebola. >> it's actually an emergency >> the end of the day it's left up to the fda and the scientific experts who really have to make the call. there are humanitarian compassionate waivers that can be given if somebody is dying, and again, if something obviously the fda often -- always looks first for safety, and then for efficacy. now we have people who are dying in large numbers, and there are a number of drugs, even one that is being -- that is actually contracted by the department of defense, that in nonunions has had 100% suck rate. again they're in clinical trials, they've been halted for some reason, i don't know why. host: can congress pave the way and make the process smoother? guest: first and foremost, right now the height of the crisis, we can act as an oversight agent. making laws, case work and oversight, it's very important we do our oversigh

joining me, chris smith of new jersey. he's the chairman of the house global subcommittee., congressman. >> thank you very much. >> thanks for being here. i appreciate it. the head of the cdc called this the biggest and most complex ebola outbreak in history. how would you grade the response so far? >> i think the centers for disease control, the usaid and others on the ground, faith-based groups are doing a fantastic job and yet their health workers have gotten sick as we all know. more has to be done. there are some experimental as you've reported on at cnn very, very well, there are have been a number of experimental efforts that might provide a way of protecting those. containment is high on the list to be sure that the approximately 1,000 people who have died, that that death toll does not increase. best practices in terms of hygiene and cleanliness, the provision of fluids and antibiotics to treat co-infection all must be applied rigorously. this is the worst as has been said. the worst before this was about 400 dead. we're now at 1,000, and it has grown. four countri
