. >> chris sowers is at the "action news" big board with the latest. >> reporter: hurrican harvey became the first hurricane to hit the united states since 2005 that was about 12 years ago when katrina struck in new orleans. it's the first hurricane category 4 to hit the coast of texas that was carla. it made landfall in san jose island, quat -- category 4 moving with gusts up to 140 miles per hour. the strengths extend from the center 35 miles per hour. it's a huge rainmaker. flipped it over to storm tracker 6 live, the feeder bands off the gulf of mexico, the heaviest winds in the reds, oranges and yellows. it came here the northern side, where the worst part of the storm hit. that where we're seeing the wall of water, what we call the storm surge up to 12 feet. the barrier islands were flooded. now we're seeing the heavy rains fall on top of that. on the other side, the winds blow this way, it's an offshore flow, the flooding has been kept to a minimum south of corpus christi. it is this area right here that we worry about with the heavy driving rains and flooding. rainfall totals up

meteorologist chris sowers is tracking the weekend forecast. i was nervous driving in. >> reporter: i was on the schuylkill expressway i had to slow my speeds to 25 miles per hour both hands on the steering wheel it was pouring coming down this morning, torrential, absolutely. camden waterfront you can see the battleship new jersey, all is quiet. as we flip it over to storm tracker 6 live you can see heavy drenching downpours, battering the area, ocean, monmouth county. we'll make a few quick zooms. first stop, seaside heights and toms river, lacey township area, stretching down to areas west of surf city. you can see the drenching downpour along route nine that is racing off to the east 20, 25 miles per hour. west the left-hand side of the screen around 206 west of speedwell there's a cell and things are beginning to calm down a little bit farther to the west. we'll go farther to the west, the neck zoom, cherry hill, delsea drive. from that point on, it should be a decent day. once we get that last, little line through, then we're looking at c

chris sowers tracking harvey and our forecast. hurrican harvey is the first major hurricane to hit this part of texas in 47 years. you have to go back to 1970, hurricane cecila i can't -- keel i keel -- which battered the coast. as we've mentioned all morning long, the problem with the storm it's not moving drifting off to the northwest at 5 miles per hour. hurricane warnings remain in effect 0 for the corpus christi and port o'connell and getting into the houston area. we have tropical storm warnings. winds are not the concern with the storm. we have hurricane-force wind up to 100 miles per hour, they extend outward from the center about 35 miles per hour. the winds are not the biggest concern with this, the storm surge as the storm moved inland and the tremendous amount of rain. what you're looking at here, this is the inif infared cloud p images, where you're seeing the wind, that's where the clouds top 40,000 feet. from houston to victoria, corpus christi we're seeing a tremendous amount of rain. rainfall totals are approachin

. >> all eyes on the storm, meteorologist chris sowers has been on top of it all weekend long, chris what is the latest from accuweather. >> reporter: the latest it is has weakened from a hurricane which was a category four down to a tropical storm. the flooding rains will continue for the next several days unfortunately as the storm continues to sit and spin across southeastern texas. there's the center, actually, 25 miles per hour south of austin, 50 miles east/southeast of san antonio texas. houston is getting pounded at this point. we're seeing rainfall rates 2 to 4 inches an hour. we have a tornado watch box across the houston area and southeastern through galveston and west of lake charles and alexandria in louisiana. the brighter reds is where the heaviest rains are falling. the center is well off to the southwest. the heaviest rains are falling in downtown houston. the purple shades representing 2 to 4 inches of rain per hour. the rainfall totals are very, very impressive. league city within the houston area, shy of 2 feet. clear creek, 21.4. pasadena, 7.72 inches. barry bayo
