i'm chris wragge. >>> i'm mary calvi. breaking news in manhattan emergency crews are out at the hospital. >> reporter: crews started to clear the scene they have the streets cornered off about the levels of pure oxygen in the air which of course can be extremely flammable. we have some video we've shot emergency room of mount sinai saint lukes roosevelt hospital where you can see that oxygen tank at the center of this response, police say shortly before 2:00 a man jumped from an apartment building right next to the hospital, that jumper is hitting a line that supplies oxygen to the emergency room. that jumper died but the force causing the tank to start leaking. no one in the emergency room was hurt but they have moved patients from the er to other areas of the hospital. we can also tell you when we first got to the scene you could actually hear the hissing, that has since stopped. we are waiting confirmation as to whether the tank has been turned off. at this point mount sinai is not accepting new patients and still have

chris wragge just showed up. it's hard to get around in the city. the wind is a major menace. this is what's going on. the camera is shaking and the snow is just horizontal. 25 feels like 15 with that wind gusting at 30 miles per hour. peak time for wind and snow will be now through mid afternoon. right now some heavy snow filling in for much more nassau into brooklyn and queens, sussex as well and up in northern new jersey and to the south there's a break closer to the center of the storm. our neighbors are going to be dealing with sleet as well. so 8 to 12 just north of the city rockland and westchester counties. in the city there will be variations from the bronx down to staten island. they could see 18 or over 18- inches of snow but a foot on average. a pretty good tally to shoot for for many in the city and i'll tell you what it's the rate and the wind that's into the risk of coastal flooding too. >> and we'll be keeping an eye on it thank you. >>> cbs this morning is next. >> we'll be here all morning long with our reporters around the tristate area. i'm diane macedo. >>

good evening, i'm chris wragge. >> welcome back. i'm kristine johnson. the family had just cleared a fire hydrant buried by the blizzard. little did they know it would be used to save their own home from flames during the following day. cbs 2's jennifer mclogan reports from sayville, new at 5:30. >> reporter: it may be a chore hard on the back and take some time. but clearing the fire hydrant on your street or in front of your home can mean the difference between life and death. >> somebody could be lost. >> reporter: joanne and steve stood on their front porch counting their blessings. their neighbor's attic caught fire a day after they shoveled out the fire hydrant. >> good for the neighborhood, too. if something happened, that fire hydrant is more than one >> reporter: the victim's fire extinguisher no match for the blaze. the sayville department responded quickly and the chief says he and his firefighters were able to contain the flames, pets were rescued and the family got out without injury, precious minutes were saved. >> when we have a hydrant th

i'm chris wragge. >> welcome back. i'm kristine johnson. coned crews are on the scene right now at 36th street and seventh avenue. jessica schneider reports. >> reporter: police and fire are keeping people off the sidewalk right here at seventh avenue between 37th and 36th all because of potential problems at this building, 498 seventh avenue. around 4:00 this afternoon, pathfinder and coned got alerts that there was a gas smell in the air. at that point they evacuated hundreds from the building. pseg and coned got the alerts. there is a faint smell of gas in the air. fire officials are checking the basements of buildings in the area. they have closed offside streets in the area as they continue to investigate. they could be here for a while longer because of that reported gas leak right behind me at 498 seventh avenue. jessica schneider, cbs 2 news. >>> meantime there is a push under way in new jersey to ban texting in cars stopped at red lights or stop signs. while texting and driving is illegal in some states like new jersey you are allo

i'm chris wragge. >> good morning everybody. head over to our sister station at t.v. 1055. we have live team coverage throughout the tristate area this morning. >> all of our reporters are dispatched across the state. john elliot in the weather center, give us the latest on this forecast. >> the forecast is right on target. it's the snow, wind accumulating snow blowing and drifting and ocean concerns as well. in the city can't see much. 25 degrees. winds out of the northeast gusting to 35. wind gusts on average between 25 and 40 miles per hour. earlier this morning ocean county, sussex county 55 miles per hour wind gusts. parts of ocean actually closer to 60. when you do the math it feels like 11 degrees. clearly cold enough for snow and lots of it. starting to see light snow fill city more snow for rockland, westchester. it's interesting. a bit of a breakup into parts of morris but these brighter white colors through sussex down through the city and the bronx and north shore we are seeing those one inch per hour snow fall rates. this morning peak rate was two inches an hou

i'm chris wragge. what was the motive for murder? police are trying to determine why a father was shot to death on long island. >> it happened outside his uniondale home. cbs 2's jennifer mclogan has the story new at 5:30. >> reporter: tears flowed from the victim's cousin incomprehensible he says that the independent honest hard working contractor who loved karaoke 37-year-old herman melendez lost his life under such violent circumstances right outside his own front door at the corner of macon and irving in uniondale. lighted candles at the curb where melendez fell after being struck by multiple bullets allegedly fired by this man from his adult soccer league. what happened, do you have an apology for the family? nassau police arrested [ non- english language ] of westbury age 35. at this time releasing no motive but say melendez was an innocent victim. >> strange because i don't know what happened. >> reporter: witnesses say melendez was shoveling snow contracting truck that he was so proud of. 911 calls went out as sensors sounded

i'm chris wragge. kids in deer park are being reminded about stranger danger after a number of luring attempts. cbs 2's steve langford spoke to parents of two children who got away from men who approached them. >> my son ran. he didn't even look right or left. he just ran. >> reporter: the father of a 6th grader at deer park, long island, recall the moment last friday afternoon when his son was confront by a masked man in a mercedes at the school bus stop by the corner of west 8th street and park avenue just down the street from their home. >> someone just walked up to him, you know, in his car and then came outside the car and spoke to him and said, you want $100? >> reporter: $100 to go with the stranger to a local arcade. this is the second report in recent days of a man trying to lure middle school children into a car. blocks away at lake avenue and west 3rd approached as they were getting off a school bus by a man in a red honda. the mother of one of the 11- year-olds targeted says the driver of t
