i need to bring into the conversation with us our christiane amanpour. she's been up to speed on the latest details regarding the reconnaissance flights that the obama administration has now said is okay to move ahead with that. what is your reaction to what you've been hearing in the last few hours? >> well, we've been reporting on what possibly might -- i interviewed the uk ambassador to the u.n. who says that now the surveillance flights have been authorized, it's possible that some u.s. action could happen, as both the general and josh have been talking to you about. i think from what i've heard from your conversation with the two gentlemen, a big sign needs to go up, wanted, one coherent strategy. as the general said, this is a major terrorist threat. there needs to be a complete strategy to defeat isis. u.s. has done it before with aqi, al qaeda in iraq and during the surge of '07, '08, they managed with the help of sunnis in iraq to push back the isis predecessor. there's a huge amount of fear here in england. the foreign secretary phillip hammond

let's bring in chief international correspondent christiane amanpour to discuss all of this. of bad options, either go it alone in syria against assad's warning or somehow turn assad into an ally. how do you see the path forward? >> well, i think there is very, very little doubt that they will not be turning assad into an ally. everyone from general martin derpcy, the top commander in the united states, to the british foreign secretary have said that that is a no go area. with he cannot turn assad into an ally, even if we have a common enemy, which is isis. they don't, they believe they don't need permission from syria to attack isis strongholds inside syria, and of course they know exactly where isis is. isis controls racca province in syria and controls a huge swathe of land inside syria and iraq, which the british foreign secretary said is a terrorist state which is going to be launched, they are absolutely convinced it is going to be used to launch attacks on britain, on europe, and perhaps even on the united states as well so they're saying it has to be addressed now. >>
