good morning, christie. >> reporter: good morning to you. this has been a troubling few weeks here at berkeley high school. late afternoon a parent spotted what they thought was a young man with a gun in his waistband near campus. beck berkeley police tried to find this person and did not find them, but the school was put on lockdown for 30 minutes. there have been other gun-related incidents in recent weeks. it has become such a hot issue that a special board meeting was held here wednesday night when parents were outspoken and worried about their kids' safety. many want a closed campus here at berkeley high. it is not closed right now. they are also calling for some metal detectors or an id system to keep track of the people here on campus. last week two students were arrested after a gun they brought to school actually went off in a bathroom, a third student was also arrested for having an unloaned gun here as well. we'll keep talking about the ideas here, but we are told there will be more security on campus and also a text tipline for s

in the east coast, christie smith is live. >> reporter: good morning, scott. if you drive around the caldecott tunnel you may have noticed more lights more workers around the west side of the caldecott tunnel because tunneling is under way marking a major turning point in the four point project. a giant excavating machine has been spinning and cutting away frommy orinda side since way back in august. apparently caltrans dug out about 900 feet, the entire tunnel being nearly 3,400 feet. tunneling is apparently a tedious and difficult and risky project with issues like falling rock and natural gas inside, which means extra safety precautions have been going on this whole time. anything that could create a spark in that tunnel is banned. there's a wall that's up on the oak left-hand side that partially blocks the view, but when it's done, the fourth core will add two lanes and help ease the reverse commute traffic. it's on pace to be completed in late 2013, which will be great news for the 160,000 drivers who use it every day. reporting live in oakland, christie

as christie pointed out, the winds are picking up. we have all this moisture and a strong front pushing in and that is kicking up the winds we will see much stronger rain and more stead rain as we head throughout the day. we are still on the warm side. the disturbed side. very unstable air. as we head throughout the day, the front comes through pushing in by about 9:00 a.m. and tomorrow this very, very cold air mass pushes into the bay area and that will keep temperatures down for tomorrow, probably going to struggle to break 54 degrees in most bay area cities. cold and wet for your saturday. right now it is certainly wet and dangerous out there for the commute this morning you want to give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination. the front to the north shaping up. this is our forecast as you can see. you have yellow and oranges embedded within here. that is very heavy rain. that is expected to push through the bay area and kick up the winds as we head throughout the morning we are expecting good rainfall all day. after that

christie is live covering that. >> reporter: good morning to you.f you live in the hills anywhere around the bay area there is a good chance you are keeping an eye on this latest round of storms. we're in oakland. i want to show you what's going on. you can see the slope is starting to give away. this handslide is near the top of mark boulevard. over the weekend two boulders came crashing down. blocking one lane westbound and there is a church on top of this hill. >> we seem to -- >> -- before the start of a major storm. geologists are saying in the bay area as you said, the soil is nearly 90% saturated now and monitoring devices in the slopes are suggesting this is really cause for concern. it's difficult to say exactly where a slide is going to happen, but mapping suggests that areas with the highest average of problems in the bay area, the san mateo coast, hills in alameda county, santa clara county and marin county and of course the santa cruz mountains. standing out here we did see a public works crew slow down and take a look. something you wa

"today in the bay's" christie smith just talked to the restaurant where it happened. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. we've been speaking with a couple of people here, the owner, but also a couple of neighbors who tell us the same thing, that they heard arguing near the bar and then rapid gunfire. one woman who didn't want to go on camera said it sounded like a machine gun. this morning there are seven bullet holes right in the front door of the bar. just steps away next door the front door is totally shot out. the owner of the restaurant there tells us that it was actually open at the time and packed with people around 11:00 last night. thankfully, he says, no one inside was hit, but when police arrived they found five people shot, four of them with non-life-threatening injuries, one in critical condition. politician say this may very well be gang-related which goes along with what the owner told us. he said the neighborhood here near 16th and mission has been heating up. >> it's bad. >> reporter: a lot of activity out front? >> around this area a lot

christie is there we won't get a car in this spot. big puddles >> good heads up. honda, toyota, sony tvs and all kinds of japanese products will likely get more expensive because of the quake. scott is here to explain. >> it's because the dollar is getting cheaper compared to their yen. japan holds a great deal of our debt and we buy stuff from japan they turn it around and invest that money in u.s. government treasuries. that's how it normal low works. economists say we can expect japan to sell off that debt, turning our ious back into dollars. weaker in the price of anything we import goes up. now that is bad news for us, but bad news for japan. you don't want your products to get more expensive because fewer people buy them. one possible side effect of all of this, economic side effect may be our trade imbalance is going to get better. another is we may see unemployment rate going down. japan will produce less and we have idle workers. here's wells fargo's chief economist. >> we may see growth in the united states relative to what you might have expected otherw

christie smith is live with the latest. >> reporter: good morning to you. well, the public works department has been investigating the factors around this horrible tragedy ever since it happened. they are going to be presenting their findings a little later this morning inside this building to the board of supervisors. they are thinking that the best way to prevent something like this from happening again is to aggressively educate the public after 16-year-old matthew miller and 17-year-old gavin powell drowned drafting on february 19th along flood-controlled district canal. near the entry point where the boys went in, they say there's a no trespassing sign. but near an adjacent entry by private property there's a slope with grass and trees. what they are suggesting is a number of things, first stressing to the public the hazards involved with something like this. that these waterways are not recreational areas. winter storms make for fast moving water. they are looking to use public access television, school districts, press releases to try to get the word

"today in the east bay's" christie smith is live in livermore. we are told the guy who died was turned away at the hospital. >> reporter: that's right. what police are saying is that the victim drove himself to a hospital here in livermore. that's actually not a designated trauma center. from there he was put into an ambulance and taken to another hospital. the incident happened on old first street. a road rage escalated into a deadly stabbing in broad daylight at 1:40 in the afternoon. police say 41-year-old colt holbrooke was driving a silverado pickup when he got into an argument with a man in a chevy cavalier. what started it? that's not clear, but hol broch holbrooke pulled out a knife and stabbed the man. the victim was taken to a trauma center where he died four hours later. holbrooke was booked into jail on suspicion of murder. christie smith for "today in the east bay." >>> a warning for women walking on uc berkeley's cam pulse. there's a sexual predator on the loose. a young woman told police she was walking near grinnell pathway when s
