that's where "today in the bay's" christie smith is live by that scene with an update on this ongoing investigation. good morning, christie. >> reporter: we just got an update from the detective that tells us this started at 10:37 p.m. on fordham street in east palo alto. they heard a number of shots going off, gunfire. when investigators arrived, they found a silver four-door car on this street inside. four people were shot. one person died. that is the 16-year-old driver. two others in the car, actually, they were shot as well. their injuries considered nonlife threatening. two young men walked up on foot and opened fire on the car. it is unclear if words were exchanged, unclear if this is gang-related or not but it happened very quickly. they are saying that there were a number of rounds, perhaps 20, perhaps more. not a lot of suspect information at this point. they will be on scene investigating for quite some time. they are telling ugs all the victims are teenagers. again, the person deceased just 16 years old. so they tell me they are going to have fordham street blocked off for

reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." >>> 5:03. it was a chaotic night on campus. university police officer in the hospital this morning after being hurt during a confrontation with protesters at san francisco state. the spokeswoman for sf state says university police tried to remove several people from inside a campus dorm about 8:00 last night. officials say those people were not supposed to be even in the building. protesters resisted and at some point, a fire alarm was pulled and the dorm was evacuated. police say five people were arrested. at this point, it is still unclear exactly how the officer was hurt. we still don't know the extent of his or her injuries. >>> police on the lookout for three suspects responsible for a violent home invasion robbery in the east bay. it happened at a home on kitayama drive monday afternoon not far from alvarado niles road. they forced their way in the home, pushed an elderly woman down on the floor and pistol-whipped a young man. witnesses say the two men got away in a newer model silver car

christie smith joins us live. >> reporter: good morning. we are expecting a press conference a little bit later this morning to shed more light on exactly what went wrong in this horrible sailing accident. i want to step aside and draw your attention. right behind this fence, there is a fence in the distance and behind that, you can sort of see a red image. that's what we are talking about after a practice run for the america's cup. the "artemis" capsized, tossing 11 crew members into the water. the 72-foot swedish boat suddenly overturned. ten of the crew members got to a support boat. they were okay. 32-year-old andrew simpson did not survive. investigators believe he was trapped under the boat for at least 10 minutes. this happened at around 1:15 in the afternoon. he died despite frantic efforts to try and sail him. the sailing efforts say the winds were pretty good when the boat capsized at about 25 miles an hour. they were practicing in the windiest part of the bay. >> between the golden gate bridge and alcatraz, the wind is between 10

"today in the bay's" christie smith is live in station 18 with a look at all the damage there and a link to another overnight crime. good morning, christie. >> good morning to you, jon. these firefighters knew exactly what that sound was. it was unmistakable. gunfire piercing the window of this firestation. this is firestation number 18. the window is where the bullets actually exited, hit another building across the street. we just shot some video from the rear of the firestation on 50th avenue here in east oakland. a window is out on the roll-up door in the back. firefighter i spoke with off camera this morning tells me they had just returned from a call, three of them, and were working inside when the glass just shattered. all three of them had to run. one of them told me it sounded like at least 50 rounds going off outside rattled nerves but otherwise those firefighters were unharmed. nearby, a man had been shot. through all of this, firefighters actually called an ambulance for him. he was taken to highland hospital where he later died. so far, no arrests. i have to tell you that th

"today in the bay's" christie smith joins us live on treasure island with the latest on the new cause for concern. good morning. >>> good morning to you, jon. the questions keep mounting about the safety of the new eastern span of the bay bridge. in march, 32 bolts were tightened and they cracked under pressure. now, a new potential problem. at the signature of this whole thing with steel rods in the base of the tower of the span. experts say that inspecting them won't be easy. the san francisco chronicle is reporting that caltrans only recently discovered that 400 or so threaded rods could be vul fleshl to cracking if exposed to hydrogen from rainwater. they call this hydrogen embrittlement. they could also be vulnerable in an earthquake. they are saying they will make sure these rods are safe. access is difficult because the tower was actually lowered down on to them. what about the planned opening of the $6.4 billion eastern span labor day weekend? >> what is driving the date is the safety? making sure that we have the right fix, taking the time to get the right fix and then to be

nbc bay area's christie smith joins us live in san francisco. christie, good morning. what was the big topic at the conference for professional businesswomen? >> reporter: good morning, marla. there were very powerful and accomplished women here today talking about how they made it to the top of these big companies and what they found when they got there, including facebook coo sheryl sandberg who walked into her office and said, i didn't even read your book. her book is a conversation about feminism in the workplace. she was a little surprised he led with that admission. but he said he heard her speak about how women execs are often labeled aggressive when men are not. he said he learned for that and asked for examples of why she was called aggressive and if a male would be treated the same. the answer was no among managers. she was one of the speakers at the professional businesswomen of california today. it was started by jackie spear several years ago. sandberg was named as number eight of the 100 most powerful women in the world and asked the audience if they were

"today in the bay's" christie smith just spoke with the boy's father who no doubt is heartbroken. t is he saying? very distraught. he has no idea why anyone would want to shoot at his 16-year-old son or his friend. it was around 11:00 last night and7é heard gunfire out in front of the home. the home just down the street on this block here. then, he says that two of the friends actually ran into the house. they had been shot and wounded. dad says he ran outside to check on his son. he knew right away that his son was already dead, that he had been shot in the head and the< chest. just an awful scene for a father to have to witness. he says his son is jose luis quinones. he used to play high school football. he was driving a friend's car, a white car, and parked it outside of the home, when two men opened fire. apparently, they ran up on foot. at least 15 rounds hit that car, the glass shattered. police say the teens in the white car actually didn't even have a gun. all between 15-17. the father crying told us that the teens had just finished eating at mcdonald's. >> they went to t

christie smith joins us live from oakland now with what's in that recently released report. good morning, christie. >> reporter: good morning, jon. a number of officers are outside for this annual memorial service they told here at the oakland police department. the acting chief is out here as well. he just left that press conference with consultants and the mayor where they outlined new crime-fighting tactics saying essentially they have to make some tough decisions given oakland's staffing shortages and rising crime problems. they talked about dividing the workloads for the most serious crimes, things like homicides and assaults, getting civilians to help respond to burglary reports saying they're not getting the response that they need. the report is by the bratton group at a cost of about $250,000 to the city of oakland. this comes just one day after police chief howard jordan stepped down, citing an undisclosed medical condition after just 19 months on the job. higher crime and a week after a critical report by the overseer of critical leadership here in the city. the fi

nbc bay area's christie smith joins us live at the scene of the crime in san jose with their reaction and new details on this investigation. christie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. neighbors tell us that when they heard a desperate call for help, they pretty much knew that it would be this house here. some people have left flowers here this morning. three people stabbed inside, a relative detained this morning. i spoke briefly with a fireman who cal fire who said it was one of their own who came to the home because his little girl was inside, she survived. >> i heard screaming and yelling and i ran to the front to see what was going on. and as i ran up to the front, the neighbors across the street was running towards me and telling me to call 911. >> reporter: neighbors who didn't want to show their faces say they were devastated by the horrific stabbing at this home on viewmont. >> i know them. i always talk to them, say hi when they're outside. >> reporter: about 3:30 yesterday afternoon, a man came to the san jose home to find three people stabbed, all his relativ

christie smith is live at the christie. do people have time to talk to you? going to be late this morning. >> well, good morning to you. we have new information for you and i spoke with a b.a.r.t. spokesperson who said they are hoping to have full service restored by the afternoon commute, so that means that if you are still getting up and out this morning, expect delays in and out of san francisco because of an accident that happened overnight. b.a.r.t. is running 23 trains usually, and now it is down to 8. b.a.r.t. is telling us that rider need to use alternate telecommute if you can. this morning we know that a maintenance vehicle collided with another one in front of it and basically rear ended it and the damage of the third rail inside of the transbay tube, and the riders have had to sit and wait while they are single tracked through the transbay tube instead of using both directions. here is a list of the repairs needed to get going again. >> and well, about 200 feet of the transbay rail has been damaged and the third rail which is going to have to be r

christie smith is headed to clear lake right now and she joins us on the phone. with an update. >> reporter: good morning, we just got into lake county. and the sun is coming out in the search to pick up for mikaela link, the 9-year-olds with autism. but they were focusing on the waterways. a ten-yeah mile area around the area, where they was playing with her brother where she likely wandered away on sunday. this is 2 1/2 hours north of san francisco. we're told today that they have a surveillance tape that shows her northbound and now police believe that she has no clothes on which apparently she has a habit of doing because of the medication she was on. about 200 or so search and rescue teams as far away as nevada are helping out mikaela may not be able to help with her own rescue. police say she doesn't respond to stimuli and neighbors are being asked to check their own properties, cars, crawl spaces just to make sure she's not there. certainly, a lot of people, family, friends, strangers hoping she comes home safely. that's the sorry in lake county, i'll send

christie smith like in san francisco where mikaela lynch goes to school. good morning, kristy. >> reporter: good morning. that's right. mikaela lynch goes to school here in san francisco but she was at her family's vacation home near clear lake when she suddenly disappeared. a little later this morning, the search for her expected to resume and, in fact, widen. 9-year-old mikaela is autistic, doesn't speak. her dad reported her missing from the home on sunday afternoon around 1:30. clear lake police say she had been playing on a trampoline in the yard. her brother ran around to get away from a bee, ran around inside and came back, she is gone. there are fliers up around the area for her. police and volunteers searched all day yesterday. the area is near a number of waterways. there were boats and dive teams out there looking for her. they say she doesn't know how to swim very well. she wouldn't know how to return home on her own. they have looked in cars and backyards to make sure she isn't hiding there. she doesn't have her medication with her and suffers

"today in the bay's" christie smith is live in oakland right now with the new report on the departmentthat is due out in just a few hours from right now. good morning, christie. >> reporter: another blow nor the city of oakland. city leaders were saying they were completely surprised about i this announcement, howard jordan stepping down after just 19 months on the job. he is citing an undisclosed medical condition as the reason. some are wondering if there is more to it as a new report is coming out. for now, anthony terivio, a 23-year-old veteran, will serve as the interim police chief. it came one week aft department ae aets's overseer issued a report for not holding officers accountable. john burress says he believes that jordan retired before he was asked to leave. jordan said, he wasn't forced out at all. this was his choice. the head of the police officer's union said jordan called him personally to deliver the news. >> many of us here at the association and rank and file officers certainly did not always agree with the chief but none of us would wish this type of illness on him

christie smith joins us live with a new report on the department. >> reporter: oakland city leaders say they were completely stunned by this. oakland's top cop, howard jordan, after just 19 months on the job, announced he was stepping down for medical reasons. in a couple of hours, the acting police chief, anthony teribio, is expected to release new information. jordan decided an undisclosed medical condition. it comes in the midst of mounting criticism of the oakland police department as a whole. the federal compliance director issued a scathing report saying the supervisor failed to properly investigate officer misconduct. oakland attorney, john burress, is out front trying to implement court-dated mandated reforms 67. he said he expected this. >> at some point in time, unless the chief was able to get up to a proper standard, he would leave. he would be asked to leave or retire. >> that report, critical of jordan and the department, is expected to be release. nbc bay area has obtained a copy and suggests a complete restructuring. it is saying that burglaries are not investigating wit

christie smith joins us. >> reporter: good morning, we're on highway 29 headed to the command post right now. at least 200 people. we're talking volunteers, search teams, law enforcement will be back at day break, working a ten-square mile area looking for mikaela lynch, some of the search teams coming as far away as nevada. and northern california. he was last seen at a vacation home near clear lake which is about 2 1/2 hours north of san francisco where she attended school. a surveillance video located yesterday shows mikaela passing all the homes near where she was staying and where last seen playing outside but she was going away from the water which is where investigators initially thought she was headed. this kind of changes the focus of their investigation. investigators say due to the medication that she was on, it wasn't clear what she might do, but that she would take her clothes off when she got warm. she's autistic as we said and may not respond to voices of people calling for her. may not be able to walk across the street if she needs help from someone. the family says she h

christie smith is live at cupertino with an update.ood morning, kristy. >> reporter: the company they are saying doesn't use gimmicks. basically, apple pays all of its required taxes in the united states and abroad. apple released testimony that cook is going to be giving a little later in washington, d.c. according to one report, apple was basically able to avoid paying about $12.5 billion in u.s. taxes by having billions in profits and dividends from overseas operations made payable to apple's irish subsidiary. for tax purposes, they don't really reside anywhere. the report says it has paid almost no money on billions of dollars in income from that entity. the subcommittee doesn't accuse apple of breaking any laws and cook says that apple is likely the largest corporate income taxpayer in the united states with a tax rate of about 30.5%. he says apple welcomes an objective examination of u.s. corporate taxes. code and system. he is even recommending some reforms on his own again. that expected to get underway in the next 30 minutes.

christie smith live in san francisco has the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, john. right now, anti-abortion demonstrators have to stay at least eight feet away. the supervisor doesn't think that is enough. he wants that buffer zone pushed way back to about 25 feet so demonstrators would have to stay that far away from doorways and driveways of reproductive health clinics in san francisco. this came it in respond to routine demonstrations where he says women have been harassed and intimidated. demonstrators say, we are just letting people know there are alternatives. they are not stopping anyone. >> we believe that strikes the right balance between protecting access without intimidation but at the same time allowing from free speech. >> now, you have people screaming from 25-feet away instead of from a quieter zone. >> reporter: they say the new buffer zone could be marked by signage and paint. repeat offenders could face jail time and even a fine up to $1,000. it needs at least six votes to pass. so far, nine supervisors have said they will sport it. >>> the group a

christie smith is live. washington making it clear that something here doesn't add up. >> reporter: that's right. apple has released an advanced copy of tim cook's temperature. basically, the ceo is saying that apple does not use tax gimmicks. in his opinion, it is likely the largest corporate in-cap taxpayer in the u.s. about $6 billion paid last year. when he testifies before congress in just a little while, cook may explain why they can do what it is that they do. the company is accused of exploiting a number of loopholes and tax shelters on income overseas to avoid paying taxes on billions of dollars here. one report suggests apple pays virtually no taxes on $102 billion. arizona senator, john mccain, the ranking member of the senate subcommittee where cook will testify that their tax practices were highly questionable. the subcommittee, though, stopped short of accusing apple of breaking in he laws or really doing anything wrong. u.s. companies owe federal income tax on profits, whether earned in the u.
