and ktvu's christien kafton joins us now. he's been walking and talking with the protesters. christien. >> reporter: we are marching with the protesters right now. we've received repeated warnings from santa rosa police saying that the protesters need to move their protest from the streets here on to the sidewalks. the protesters not complying with their wishes at this point. i did have a chance to speak to the protester organizers and she tells me this protest is on its way to the sonoma county jail. now from what i understand one of the protesters was detained or arrested by santa rosa police as they tried to enter the city council chambers for the council meeting a little earlier this afternoon. that angered the crowd -- [audio difficulties ] >>> coming up i'll detail the weather for the next coming days. >> they said remember to bundle your kids up because it's really cold. >>> we look at steps parents can take to protect their children. >>> we want to check in now with christien kafton. we lost his signal right before the break. he is marching with protesters who are marc

christien kafton has the story. >> reporter: you look around me you may see a lot of toys but if you see behind me you will see there's a lot of blank space on the shelves behind me. there's nowhere near where they need to be. and firefighters are now asking for help to make sure kids have a happy holiday. >> reporter: in a locked storage room there's a lot of bare shelves. richmond and el cerrito first responders are trying to make it a happy holidays. but it's looking grim now. >> what you see in here will probably be 1/4 of that. >> reporter: rob woods says crews have been fund raising all years and chevron has pledged to match up to $10,000 for the toy drive. so far though they've only raised about 4,500 and the clock is ticking to the 21st. the day of the give away. >> one week from yesterday. >> reporter: that's six days. >> six days or we're rounding the corner and we need help. >> a consumer psychologist say tonight that during the holiday season donors can get inundated with requests. but woods points to the long lines of people signing up to receive gifts for their children

ktvu's christien kafton is live where firefighters are sounding the donation aalarm. >> the season ofing and firefighter -- alarm. >> reporter: the season of giving and firefighters want to make sure kids have a merry season. there is a lot of space here. firefighters tell me they are only a quarter of where they need be. police and firefighters have been raising money all year long and they say chevron will match $10,000 in donations and so far they only raised $4,500. they say there will be kids who wake up with nothing under the tree this season. >> this year is just weird. every year it always happens the last week of the give away. stuff comes and we are starting that week but it is slow. >> reporter: firefighters tell me in all 1700 families registered and they had to turn families away. the deadline is december 21 giving them less than a week to make their goals. if you want to help out you can find a link on www.ktvu.com under web links. christien kafton, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> lawmakers spoke out on a budget proposal passed by the house. >> this is a symbolic agreement. >>

christien kafton tells us despite a new area code for san francisco the 415 is going to stick around. >> reporter: the 415 area code is as identifiable with san francisco as the giants but soon people calling the area will have to dial a new number. since 1947 san francisco has been united by one number. but the california public utility's commission gave the green light for a new area code. 628 starting in 2015. the public utility's commission says at the rate new phone numbers are being added to the system the 415 numbers will run out in october 2015. some say they are attached to their 415 phone numbers. >> i am a san francisco native. i never switch my number to any other zip code, ever. >> reporter: the new plan will allow anyone who wants to keep their old number. only new phone service requests will be assigned the 628 area code. the area code really doesn't matter say some. >> i think in this day where cell phones there's no longer a long distance. it's really irrelevant what your area code is. >> reporter: sergio orelli says his business relies on customers calling in. he say

ktvu's christien kafton talked with the victim's family and police and he tells us oakland's homicideate is down compared to last year. >> reporter: neighbors near campbell and 8th street say they heard gunfire at 11:15 this morning and looked outside to see a car coasting to a stop. the man inside, dead. >> we're his family. >> reporter: by this afternoon, the victim's family had identified him as albert ghosten, saying they hope his death does not contribute to a cycle of violence. >> he is my nephew. he's young and he has two children and it's very sad these youngsters is killing one another. >> reporter: police are looking for a possible motive and the shooter or shooters. >> our investigators are out right now, trying to canvas the neighborhood and see if there's any witnesses that are willing to talk to the officers. >> reporter: despite today's deadly shooting, officers are crediting the cooperation of the community with bringing down the city's overall homicide rate compared to last year. in all, 131 people were killed in oakland in 2012. with today's homicide, this year's tot
