christina greer, both doctors, associate professor of political science at fordham university. dr. thing yesterday. you can criticize tim scott all you want, say he's sold out, tim scott was lying or dishonest, but nationally uncle tim was trending on twitter last night. to me it was reminiscent of people referring to condoleezza rice as aunt jemima during the bush administration. from your viewpoint, what do you think about the fact that that was trending last night and do you find it as problematic as i did? >> yeah, i definitely found it problematic. but i think it's also one of those things where on social media the internal conversations that many black people have about tim scott and the republican party have now made their way to the public discourse. i mean, let's be clear. looking at tim scott's response, we know that he's carrying the water not just for the republican party and see two other black colleagues, but he did so under the trump administration. when he talks about growing up in a one-bedroom house, ask yourself, why, because your party doesn't believe in equalit

joining us now is christina greer, an associate professor of political science at ford university. she is the author of black ethnics, race, immigration, and the pursuit of the american dream. good evening professor greer, good to see you. >> great to see you as well, joshua. >> i have to say, when john boehner said i don't know where this came from, that is not really true at all. we have seen the political rhetoric of the last four years. even before the last four years, this term, america first, it has some roots. it has some history. walk us through the history. >> well, this country, ever since its inception has been a country of exclusion. it's been a country of white supremacy, it's been a country of anti black racism specifically in exclusively. what we began to talk about the last few weeks, we know we had several asian music -- asian american exclusion acts. lots of legislation to exclude jewish americans that first point in this country's history. obviously japanese internment -- ex germination camps that had talents and germans in there at certain times. there's also th

"the 11th hour with brian williams" starts right now. good evening once again. i'm ali velshi in for brian williams. there is breaking news about trump act lite matt gaetz. now under investigation for possible sex trafficking. tonight "the new york times" reveals gaetz was looking to get a blanket pardon from president trump. quote, in the final weeks of president trump's term, he asked the white house for blanket preemptive pardons for himself and unidentified congressional allies for any crimes they may have committed. justice department investigators had begun questioning mr. gaetz's associates about his conduct, including whether he had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old that violated sex trafficking laws. mr. gaetz did not tell white house aides he was under investigation for potential sex trafficking violations when he made the request. aides told mr. trump of the request, though, it's unclear whether mr. gaetz discussed the matter directly with the president. the "times"

still with me christina greer, elaina plott and sahil kapur. ing some needle threading on this question, in that section of the speech. what was your reaction to it, christina? >> i thought the section was interesting. obviously, i would've liked much more time dedicated to that section. but i thought the way the president wolf in -- first of all he said, white supremacy is terrorism. then he walked into george floyd, talking about the george floyd justice act. and then he transitioned into equity for lgbtq plus, asian american protections, protections for violence against women, gun violence. i fell all of those came together in a larger, 21st century, civil rights package. that he's putting together and asking congress to pass certain legislation, so he can sign it. but what i think is fascinating is we have to remember there are thousands upon thousands of black americans who were in police departments across the country. they have family members who are police officers, military personnel, there are many conservative -- 90% of black american
