let's join christina loren with the latest. >> good morning to you. yeah, it is treacherous out there this morning. this is not a typical storm system, we're getting slammed with heavy rainfall right in the heart of the morning commute. right now we're starting to see a little improvement at the immediate coastline. as i zoom into this batch of moisture you can see the tri-valley getting hit hard. you find the ponding, the flooding the next couple hours and even in the south bay it's still coming down heavily. we want to bring in mike inouye and check your roads. >> that radar shows us, the tri-valley, 680 corridor. over here we have wet roads for the south bay, a slowdown, the arrow marks where the camera was. north 87 shows the build. southbound better news, peggy gave you that live report. one lane at taylor is open but there is a lot of flooding, be careful. watch the surface streets, watch the blue areas. we'll be back after this break. >>> right now a microclimate alert as we give you a live look outside. san jose, dublin and san francisco. earl

we begin with christina loren. >> good saturday morning to you.ause look at this moderate batch of rainfall getting ready to slam most of the peninsula and will work its way in as we head throughout the day. i stop the clock and by 7:00 p.m. still getting the heavy downpours and take you into tomorrow morning 8:00 a.m. and heavy rain in the south bay and we'll finally get a break as we wake up and meet back here on monday morning but not before we accumulate potentially upwards of 5, maybe 7 inches more. in the north bay you'll see we won't get as much rain in the south bay because we get the rain shadow effect, 1 to 2 inches a decent total and enough to do flooding. let's take you out live to jeff ranieri our chief meteorologist in san francisco. jeff, what is it looking like? i know it's coming down where you are. >> reporter: yeah, it's coming down pretty hard. we've seen some waves come in really hard and visibility reduced and other times moderate rainfall but sideways with the wind 20 to 25 miles per hour. back here hend me the golden gate b

let's check in with meteorologist christina loren. good morning to you. take a look at these major totals from over the weekend. most of the high totals are from the north bay as predicted but look at this. this is measured for you in. we almost accumulated two feet of rainfall high atop mt. tam. we're talking about definite aftermath. we didn't have as much rainfall in the south bay, we typically get that rain shadow effect. we picked up over 5 to 8 inches of rain in the santa cruz mountains and a little over an inch and a quarter in the south bay, like willow glenn and campbell. in los gatos, over six inches of rain. we needed it so bad. so it's great news. there is more on the way so your live radar tells the story. showers clearing out. we have a little residual moisture on the western facing slopes around san jose. this will be the case for the day. that's where you see clouds banked up. and yeah, maybe you're going to stay indoors, watch the olympics. then bright sunshine. our next chance for rain on wednesday. we see another co

christina loren will tell us how long this will last. let's start with christie smith. she is bearing down this morning live out there along the elements on the san mateo bridge. what's it like out there? >> reporter: good morning to you. i have to tell you, this is the real thing. it's been so long since i've seen it. i had to figure out where all of my rain gear is. i haven't had it on for such a long time. since i got up driving in from the east bay it's raining just like this. you can see there is standing water out here on the ground. we drove across the san mateo bridge. my photographer had to hold the steering wheel tight. it's windy crossing the bridge too. that is causing some problems throughout on the roadways. already this morning starting in san francisco, a bad one, a driver in a porsche drove with the top down this morning, spun out and hit a tree. there were some minor injuries and the car itself, well, it was totaled. if you know cars, those can go up to $100,000. major front end damage there. we're talking about rain flew the morning commute which in y

first let's check the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. good morning. >> hey, good morning to you. the time 4:30. and we are tracking pretty significant rainfall. especially in the north bay. things are starting to improve but i want to show you this live picture of san jose where things are looking relatively clear. so we're going to take a look. first, i want to take you live to bob redell out there on the roads. bob, what is the aftermath from this whopper storm? we didn't get a lot in the south bay but we did north of the golden gate bridge. >> reporter: yes, good morning to you. of course right now we do have a break in that rain. we're on highway 87 at guadeloupe heading through downtown san jose on northbound 280, you can see this is good, it's going to make for an easier commute but it's not good for our water supplies, the people in charge of our water tell us we need a lot more rain. yes, this storm was helpful but nowhere near enough. we're still at about 20 to 25% of normal rainfall levels for this time of the year. >> i think

meteorologist christina loren joins us from los gatos. nice to see you here on a weekend. >> reporter: it's great to be here with you, diane. you know what, it's great to be getting the steady drizzle if that's all it is in the south bay. i'm here at the reservoir in los gatos. this reservoir is looking healthier than it did about two weeks ago. but still, we don't have the water level reaching the docks just yet. it's going to take three at least big more storms for that to be the case. i want to take you right to the radar and let you know why we're not seeing as much rainfall here in the south bay as we're seeing everywhere else. it's what we call the south bay rain shadow effect. those showers are breaking apart as they make their way over the santa cruz mountains before they get into the san jose area. the reason is rising air cools and condenses, we get the heavy downpours on the western facing slopes of the santa cruz mountains, but the dry air on the other side, so those showers just fall apart as they make their way into the vall

meteorologist christina loren joins us with the forecast. >> good morning.h, a good looking day shaping up. it's our last dry day. by tonight, showers move in. talking about potential for heavy rainfall. right now temperatures are in the 30s and 40s. and we are headed towards upper 50s, as we head throughout the day today. it going to be warm. want to make sure you're ready for that, only in the south bay area. temperatures this morning, chilly. there we go. i appreciate that. hard to do this when i can't see anything. weather story of the day, rain is returning. you'll hear a lot about this. today is the last dry day. tonight into tomorrow, potentially one inch of rain on the valley floor. as we get into friday, a ridge builds in, that means a dry break. saturday into sunday, monday and tuesday, we tap into what we call the atmospheric river, talking about major, major downpours and potential for flooding in a very, very dry bay area. it's been so dry. now we're going to get hammered with storms. starting at this point tomorrow morning, though, it's going t

let's check in with christina loren with what is going on out there. >> hey, good morning to you.ly, fog is not one of those weather elements that stays stationary. it drifts around. that's what we're noticing this morning. as you make your way out the front door you want to make sure you're on high alert. you want to eliminate the distractions in your vehicle and leave a healthy space between you and the car in front of you. if you can control it the guy in back of you as well. this is that kind of fog where even your immediate surroundings you're used to seeing are going to look unfamiliar to you. we're talking about visibilities down to about 2 1/2 miles in san jose, we're at 5 miles in mountain view and five in half moon bay. the sun starts to make an appearance t fog is going to get worse before it gets better so make sure you give yourself ample time. speaking of which, bob redell is live out there in it this morning. and you can probably attest to this. you'll run into the thick patches of fog, then an area of clearing and boom, before you know it you're back in the fog. it
