christine, thanks. >>> hurricane matthew has become the strongest atlantic hurricane in a decade. south eastern u.s. have started to evacuate. matthew first overred over haiti in the tip of cuba and heading to the bahamas. state leaders from florida to the carolinas are warning people to prepare for the worst. >> with the storm going up our coast, a small deviation. >> we territory yet. we are still moving as the storm moves. >> the storm is huge. it carries a state larger than -- it covers an area larger than the state of texas. there is a chance it could move farther west. kathy, what part of makes this storm so dangerous is its the great lakes. it's not nearly as strong. and then of course we have high pressure offshore in the atlantic. and that also creates some moments. these upper atmosphere features are fluctuating and so is matthew. this system hit jamaica hard, hit haiti very hard, and now florida and georgia and the carolinas bracing for epic flooding and large storm surgery. now a category three storm winds at 120 miles per hour north of jacksonville go offshore again. all the models comi

matthew pose for the eastern u.s.? we asked meteorologist pedram javaheri. >> john and christine, we are watching hurricane matthew across peninsula. this storm impacting one of the poorest nations in the western hemisphere, but one of the poorest in the world. the concern is when you think of the island, the storm surge will be devastating. 7 to 11 feet high. you talk about the heavily deforested landscape in the region. a lot of the energy is coming in in people taking trees out and burning it and using charcoal for energy and that could lead to humanitarian crisis with the amount of water that comes down. all of that will be runoff and could lead to flash flooding. we have seen this with tropical features making landfall on haiti and leading to large scale fatalities. the storm system moves off the eastern coast of florida. the model consensus is different. the storm system offshore and the american system brings in remnant rainfall to the northeast and pushes it to southern canada next week. a lot to be seen with what happens. certainly interesting weather ahead of us across the eastern seaboard. >> a tense week. tha

joining us now with the path of matthew is meteorologist derek van dam. >> good morning, john and christine. the path is becoming clearer and clearer to us at the cnn weather cent center. this is the latest from the national hurricane center. still a strong category three. there are developments in which the storm is more organized. we are seeing a defined wall south of nassau and the bahamas. it storm is strengthening and we will see that bump up to a category four before potentially making landfall across the atlantic seaboard of florida. here is the latest warning from the national hurricane center. from brevard on the florida/georgia border. warnings from florida to georgia. likelihood of tropical-storm force winds. of course, the exact track is so crucial. what we are starting to see is the computer models converge on agreement. the path is important. miles count here. if we see a deviation here from the path, if that moves 50 miles inland, it brings the bulk of the devastation with it. if it shifts to the east, offshore, we will miss the worse devastation from hurricane matthew. eithe

christine. haiti is lashed by matthew's winds. it is cuba's turn this afternoon and later in the week, bahamas and the united states. i'm here at santiago and the state media is blasting out messages to tell people to prepare and evacuate where they expect to see storm surge which could wipe away homes and boats and people. cubans are taking this very seriously. we are seeing people tie down their roofs. we see people loading up on supplies. this is a very poor country. they lack resources. they have a lot of experience. they dealt with hurricanes over the years. they are still recovering from hurricane sandy here. it ripped through this city of 500,000 people causing a lot of damage. while they have a lot of experience, no one has seen a hurricane like this in generation. we see president raul castro warning people they have to be ready because of the powerful storm. it will have a major impact. >> patrick, stay safe and keep us up to date on the preparations as you prepare for the storm. >>> the big threat to haiti right now. wh

matthew directly impacts florida, there is massive destruction we have not seen in years. >> let's get the latest update from the cnn weather center. joining us now is meteorologist derek van dam. >> john and christine, we just received the 5:00 a.m. update from the national hurricane center. sure enough, hurricane matthew strengthened since the last update at 2:00 a.m. winds now sustained at 125 miles per hour. this is putting it at the upper eschelon of hurricanes. this is just about 50 miles south of the capital of the bahamas which is nassau. and 24 hours out from impacting the florida coastline. final preparations need to be under way if you are going to evacuate. you should make that decision right now. this is the latest warning. brevard county north to florida and georgia. that shading of red indicates our hurricane warnings. the probability of hurricane force-winds as the moments go by as the atlantic facing seaboard of the peninsula. miles matter in terms of the exact path of that eyewall which contains the strongest winds. come to the 3d graphic. you can see the exact path the national hurricane center has hurricane matthew with. any deviation of 50 miles inland, that takes the strongest

christine? >> the reporter: well, matthew phinney pleaded not guilty to charges, including child rape and two counts of indecent assault and battery on a person over 14. he entered the in fall river, shark he would, arriving from -- shackled, arriving from minnesota, where he's been imprisoned for sexually abusing two boys who were clients of his casting agent sill, walden entertainment. now this alleged victim is local, he was 14 when he says, phinney, a family member, sexual assaulted him while staying in their norton home in 2000. today in court, phinney maintained his innocence, pleading absolutely not guilty. his attorney requested that phinney be sent back to that he can continue his treatment. a program for sexual offenders. >> we're looking forward to the trial date, as you know, the government has 120 days to actually bring him to trial. and we'll pick a trial date if december. in the interim, i'm hoping the judge will review the law and the interstate contact and allow him to go back to minnesota pending the trial. >> the reporter: the victim's mother, however is outraged and disappointed

hey, john and christine, the floodwaters, believe it or not are still rising in portions of north carolina, particularly here in lumberton perhaps the worst affected by hurricane matthew behind by the massive storm. you still see neighborhoods under water. the residents here waking up in nearby shelters this morning. their lives on hold. even some of the city's construction projects, if you look off in the distance, also right now sit abandoned. that's because they have to wait until the water levels begin to recede which we're told could be days, weeks perhaps even months for some particular -- for some portions here. so where's all of this water coming from? we're told that the nearby lumber river was two feet above flood stage before hurricane matthew actually swept through the region. many people here actually thought the worst was over when the storm blew through over the weekend. of course, the water levels began to rise. officials are keeping a close eye on the water. there have been several rescues that happened the last several days. meantime, people here are hoping the worst is over as they're hoping to get their lives back on track it's in coming days. for
