one thing i want to emphasize though, chuck. everybody is acting as if the existing market was working. fact of the matter is that a whole lot of people who are in this individual market who are big health care on their own, not getting it through their employer, they might be happy with it this year, and then suddenly next year the cost got jacked up by 15%, 20%. the average increase on premiums in this individual market for somebody who kept their health care for a while, average increase was double digits. if they actually got sick and used the insurance they might find the next year their premiums had gone up or insurer may have dropped them altogether because they have a pre-existing condition. women were charged as much as double compared to men. so this is a market that wasn't working. and a whole lot of people were dissatisfied. what we have done to increase the consumer protections that are in place for the families and those folks. we have said, you can't drop people when they get sick and need it most. we said that yo

>> chuck, look. the president set a clear goal which was to dismantle the al qaeda network and prevent them from being able to use it as a launching pad to attack us. we have been clear since we set our timeline to wind down the war by the end of 2014, we would contemplate two missions for u.s. forces. those are counter terrorism. if we need to go after the remnants of al qaeda in afghanistan, those are training equipment with the national security forces. we would not under any agreement be fighting the taliban. the afghans will be responsible and may be patrolling their towns and mountains. in any terrorism efforts, they would be focused on al qaeda. >> you need 8,000 soldiers to do this? >> chuck, the president hasn't decided to keep a residual force or set a number for that force. we know they will need training equipment. that doesn't necessarily have to involve forces in the country, but there will be an investment. we need to hold them together. if you have a situation like that, it won't be g

i think the suburbs as chuck todd was pointing out. one thing that was remarkable in the polls too. 20% of voters said that abortion was their number one issue in this race so obviously cuccinelli is very far right extreme views on abortion were of concern here. what republicans were handed. they had historical trend. virginians like to hand the governor's mansion to the party that is out of power in the white house. they have done so since 1973. they have off-year demographic election trend going for them. in off years, it its not the coalition by and large that shows up to vote. it tend to be more republican leading electorate. they also had in terry mcauliffe. a relatively weak candidate. that they could have picked off. they had on the republican side. the lieutenant-governor. much more moderate. much more mainstream candidate. if they elected him. if they had nominated him. i think there is a very good chance that he would have won the governorship. the tea party republicans need to realize they were handed all of these advantages

chuck knows this firsthand. as a result of sequester, as a result of the shutdown, we are hurting our military readiness in this country. we're making it much more difficult to respond to a major crisis outside of the war zones. the shutdowns and the threats to financially default this country have sent a message of weakness to the world. it could be avoided if our leaders came together and made compromises necessary to govern the country. public0 years of service, i've seen washington at its best and washington at its worst. but even though i see a washington that is dysfunctional .oday, i've also seen it work republicans and democrats coming together to protect our country. it can happen again but our leaders have to be willing to take risks. the real strength of america, the real strength, lies and the american people, lies in those men and women in uniform who are willing to put their lives on the line in order to protect this country. that is where the real strength of america lies.
