. >>> chuck bell is standing by with the latest on maria. now, chuck, it's been downgraded from hurricane to tropical storm? >> yeah. still an awful lot of wind and wave action over the open waters of the atlantic. that is particularly harsh on the outer banks and virginia. it's the extended period of time with the wind and the rain that is doing the beach erosion. 60 plus-mile-an-hour winds on the other side of it. not exactly something to be taken all that lightly if i could finally just spit it out. meanwhile, there we go, 70-mile-an-hour sustained winds now as of 5:00 a.m. advisory. that's new information that just came in. a new forecast track. still going north at 5 miles per hour. within 24 hours it should be going almost due east. then it will really pick up steam and race out over the open waters. by sunday and monday it's getting close to scotland. that's a long ways from here. we'll have the five day forecast coming up. >>> chuck, thank you. so twitter is considering users some more space to express ourselves. >> no fun. social med

chuck bell. he's back in town. he's talking about irma. good morning, chuck. >> good morning, sheena. video of tampa bay with all the water blown out to sea. they had dry land in the middle of parts of tampa bay and near the shoreline there. the complete opposite has happened. no longer an offshore wind, now howling on shore wind has brought flooding back into tampa bay with some 8 to 10-foot waves on top of the high water. so this is probably the worst case scenario for tampa here early this morning. the heaviest of the rain now has moved up into parts of southern georgia and northern florida. the heavy rain shield will migrate northbound towards the atlanta area. atlanta, a lot of flights changed there. keep in mind, there could be a lot of significant flight delays today as that tropical moisture goes up. the first of that moisture goes towards memphis before it comes to us. we'll have showery weather mid to late week. we'll update that part of the forecast coming up. but >> might have an issue on the george washington parkway. at this p

i kind of have the same effect when i searched chuck bell this morning. computer completely froze. >> that's not good. we hate when the computers freeze up. that's for sure. >>> we're going to keep a close eye in the tropics the next couple of days. unfortunately, our friends and neighbors in puerto rico are about ready to get a hard hit from hurricane maria. this is going to cause big problems in the caribbean for the next 24 to 46 h. 150 mile per hour sustained winds now as it went through dominique south of guadalupe. unfortunately, it will go through the virgin islands and u.s. virgin islands. worse still, this is likely to become a category 5 storm. just a little more intensification and then it will become a 5. winds now at 150 miles per hour. -- 155 miles per hour. the line between category 4 and 5 is 157. it really won't have any differentiating impact. but it's likely to have 160 mile per hour winds within the next 24 hours and make landfall somewhere on the eastern half of puerto rico as a category 5. likely to be the first major hurricane since

chuck bell, what does it show us? >> still, a very strong category 3 hurricane. let me get my graphic up. here we are. here comes hurricane maria's information. still, a big threat to the turks and caicos down in the caribbean. 120-mile-an-hour sustained wind. there is the turks and caicos islands right there. dominican republic is moving away from there. with time, very good news. with this forecast track, it continues to take it away from the continental u.s. for the next couple of days. there is bermuda right there. so far, it looks like it is still going to be able to thread the needle between the outer banks and bermuda. a little bit back to the west. that's not until wednesday of next week. mainly just open water the next couple of days. we will have to make sure it gets any closer to the u.s. after all that devastation, it is now headed back over the turks and caicos. look at weekend forecast coming up. >>> chuck, thank you. >> puerto ricans have been posting countless pictures of the damage left behind. in was the second hurricane to impact that island th

let's start with meteorologist chuck bell and a look at what we can expect today. hurricane maria. still a powerful category 3 storm. just north of the dominican republic now. it's going to continue to be a problem across the caribbean for a couple of days. keep that in mind if you have travel plans down there. it could seriously impact especially the southern bahamas towards the turks and caicos. there's maria now. you can tell by looking at it, this is a powerful storm. it's still a category 3 storm with 115 mile per hour sustained winds near the core of the storm. the track over time is to take it near the turks and caicos islands and heading towards tuesday next week, there's bermuda right there. somewhere between the outer banks and bermuda making that all-important recur va'a tur back into the open waters of the atlantic. we'll keep a close eye on that. temperatures in the 60s and 70s. today's high up near 88 degrees. sheena. feels like a continuation of summertime. >> yeah, chuck. it really does feel a continuation of summertime. while you were talkings, i w
