and mayor chuck reed tried to talk about the city's retirement benefits, there was union members listening to every word. we heard mayor reed use the $650 million figure often, referring to retirement cost projections. but not one time did he use that figure in tonight's speech. so, i asked him after the speech, i asked mayor chuck reed, if he's backing away from the $650 million figure. and i also asked h ioff the pension reform initiative should be taken off the june ballot. and this is what he had to say. >> $650 million is still a reasonable ballpark estimate of the pessimistic scenarios. when you're doing projections, you try to have a base case, a pessimistic case and an optimistic case. and the folks opposed to it being on the ballot, don't want the people of san jose to decide. it's a political stunt. it's political theater. we're going to have a ballot measure in june. you have to expect that. >> it was unfortunate in the thing, in his state of the city, where he said he's still moving forward with the ballot measure because of the fact that we believe that if we want to find some
