chuck todd is off today. when the stories about harvey weinstein first broke last month, many thought the outrage over sexual misconduct would pass like a summer storm. now it feels more like climate change, with nine women coming forward with accusations against alabama republican senate candidate roy moore, republicans are trying to figure out whether to accept him, disown him, or, if necessary, expel him. then just as democrats were enjoying republican hand-wringing over moore came the compelling accusation by a radio host and former model against one of their own, senator al franken of minnesota. and if that were not enough, the national revulsion towards this kind of behavior is forcing republicans to confront the fact that the president stands accused of more than a dozen women of sexual misconduct and compelled democrats to reexpect their unwavering support for bill clinton, especially how quickly they once dismissed charges against him as pure right-wing politics. still, this week's accusations agains

i'm katy tur in new york if nor chuck todd. tonight we're following again the developments of a mass shooting. we've gotten to the point it isn't just that gun violence and mass shootings are a sad and predictability reality in this country, but where the political response to them is just as sad and just as predictable. when these things happen, pretty much all republicans say now is not the time to talk gun laws. democrats say, now is the exact time to talk gun laws. the end result -- nothing happens. and today, while the people of sutherland springs, texas are mourning lost loved ones and praying for the wounded, both sides stuck to their usual scripts. the republican deflection once again on full display including from the white house. >> and i think that mental health is your problem here. this isn't a guns situation. i mean, we could go into it, but it's a little bit soon to go into t. the rush to judgment particularly by people who are just to see politics and trump derangement in every single thing they do it doesn't he

my colleague chuck todd is on the phone now. chuck, there was so much anxiety and focus on this race. what do you make of tonight's results? >> well, the data, the results matched the data. i think, you know, why there was so much anxiety that i noted even with the people that were looking at the data and all of that on the northam campaign themselves, they had their own anxiety, was because they were sitting in this exact same moment a year ago. >> right. >> on one hand. so there's a little bit of that going on, that anxiety. but frankly, even in virginia, four years ago, if you remember, all the numbers pointed to this big mac equal live win and it turned out to be a nail biter. i don't think we called that rate until the 10:00 hour. basically we had to wait to see if northern virginia was going to perform like northern virginia before we could call that race. tonight, what you're seeing is the -- it looks like a bad environment for republicans, but you're not sure if the tactics are going to work. going in it looked like this
