time to bring in chuck todd, nbc news political director and moderator of "meet the press." hi, chuck. as always, thank you for joining us this morning. this past week has been primarily focused on protests across the country but we can't forget coronavirus which primarily dominated our news the last couple of months. in light of the coronavirus effect on the economy, the house has passed a bill providing financial aid for states and local governments that have suffered from severe revenue losses from covid-19, and here in california we have a $54 billion budget deficit. what are the chances that the senate will go along with that? >> oh, i think it's pretty much not going to happen now. i think that jobs report from friday really did sort of take away the urgency that democrats, i think, were hoping -- that senate republicans would feel that they needed to negotiate. one thing about the jobs report while it showed an overall gain in jobs on one of the big declines, we lost another half a million government jobs on the state and local level due to furloughs from some lack of

it is "meet the press" wednesday on a busy afternoon, i'm chuck todd. inside and outside the beltway, the president wrapped up a conference after meeting with poland's president. the house wrapped up a meetinging wig two whistle-blowers alleging serious misconduct and political interference under attorney general bill barr. a grand jury indicted all three in killing of ahmaud arbery in georgia. and senate democrats this afternoon blocked consideration of the republican party's police reform bill. we begin tonight with verdict of public opinion involving the president's failure of leadership particularly on the virus. according to a new poll in the "new york times" and sienna college, donald trump would lose by 140 points if the election were today. recent polls have had trump trailinged by 12, 8 and 14 points respectively. the average in double digits on the various sites that do polling averages. two new polls in battleground states show that double-digit lead nationally is trickling dow down biden up 8 and results you might expect if the president was

i'm chuck todd on a day when the coronavirus headlines go from bad to worse. cases are spiking dramatically across the sunbelt. in texas the governor has started rolling back the state's reopening plans. bars were ordered to close today. restaurant capacity is being scaled back. you can see why. the state is seeing exponential growth in cases and hospitalizations and the rise continues. in florida the state said today, it will shut down bars as well. the number of cases there are exploding. the state reported an astonishing 8,000 plus cases. closer to 9,000 in one day. basically, doubling in one 24-hour period. that's one 24-hour period but it makes you wonder, what will the next 24 hours look like? these moves in two southern states may cause other southern states to scale back as well. cases are spiking all across the sunbelt. in some cases at exponential levels. while some places see their numbers decline, the sheer scale has men this country case curve bends in the wrong direction. we are almost back to square one. we're seeing an increase in hospitalizati

i'm chuck todd. we begin tonight with what dr. fauci testified today is a disturbing surge of infections in states across the country while president trump is rallying crowds in arizona which is one of those hotspots, perhaps the hottest of all the hotspots right now. the spiking cases in multiple states cannot be explained away by more testing. texas hit record number of hospitalizations 11 days in a row now. they have set a hospitalization record 11 days in a row. south carolina, eight days in a row of record hospitalizations. arizona eight straight days of hospitalizations. california with the highest number of hospitalizations since april 30th. governor abbott said it reported a record number of cases and urged texans to stay home. >> because the spread is so rampant right now, there is never a reason for you to have to leave your home unless you do need to go out. the safest place for you is that you're home. >> so those stay-at-home recommendations are a notable shift in tone for a governor dechding his state's reopening pla
