once you go outside of the cincinnati region, there's almost no recognition at all. one of the goals in writing this book was to bring this really fascinating character to life. was really an interesting set of circumstances around george remus. so we'll have a little discussion today about that. the first thing that people ask me whenever i determine i'm writing the bourbon king is how could you get interested in this person? how did you come across george remus? about 17 years ago a very prominent historian named stanley cutler who became really famous for investigating watergate and writing about watergate, he was editing a reference collection. many of you might as you did in school called the dictionary of american history and that's what teachers use to send their students to find out about american history. he was putting out a new edition and he asked me which my writing a little essay on bootleggers next i was like bootleggers? why would we want to talk about that? in that research, 17 years ago i ran across remus, and like a bad song from the 1980s, it stuc

said he traveled quitso he travo cincinnati. he determined i'm going to use the same thing defending myself, so he defends himself when he goes on trial against charlie taft. he's the son of william howard taft. william howard taft is now chief justice of the supreme court. there are letters in which william howard taft tells his golden boy immaculate son who is supposedly mediate future presidential candidate don't do it, don't let remus get the best of you. he will try every trick in the book because what people in cincinnati didn't realize in chicago attorneys either loved or hated him. the ones that left him cold in the napoleon of the bar that speaks to the air that he put on, the schismatic overtone. the people that didn't like him call him weeping the thing remus because he made the law a joke. he would do anything to manipulate the jury. i like to think of him as kind of the johnnie cochran of the early 19 hundreds chicago. he would do anything. he was wildly through his arms up in the air. he would have his clients pass

cincinnati's on the other side of the ohio river. these are the cincinnati suburbs. in each one of those counties relative to what he did four years ago when he got elected governor, bevin was ten-plus points behind that pace, and he was also ten-plus points behind the pace that donald trump set when he won in 2016. so that was significant movement, pretty large in terms of population part of the states, about 10% of the state's population is just in those three counties. that was a major problem getting really just monster turnout, monster numbers out of louisville and lexington, the two sort of democratic parts of the state. that was key. there were, if you look really in the eastern part of the state, the eastern side of kentucky, rural, blue collar, you saw a bunch of blue counties there, and a bunch of red counties where it was close. that's a major reversal from what happened in 2016. it's a fascinating story in that part of kentucky. what you have there, if you look on paper in rural eastern kentucky. there are still more registered democrats than republicans.

they were supposed to roll over the cincinnati reds. well, the reds win their pennant by nine games. nine games. and they have the highest one-loss percentage in baseball -- or it is not exceeded until the 1927 yankees, who ain't bad, okay? ain't bad at all. and their second half season is amazing. they have a one loss percentage of .712 in that second half. they are on fire going into the -- going into the world series. and they are deep. where the white sox were shallow in a pitching staff, the reds are so strong, they can start five different guys in the first five games of that 1919 world series. there's another myth, which is maybe not as important, but in terms of, like, how difficult was it to garner information to construct histories of the black sox. and eliot asinof writes that basically there was a wall of silence involving not only the black sox but the clean sox, the honest players, the players who played against them. and everyone for some reason, there was this cone of silence that fell down about the -- around the world

of cincinnati ohio.oledo there for behear. back in time matt bevin won by a significant marj j four years ago. more proof of the suburban shift, run if you will away from the republican party in the trump era. it's not all trump. matt bevin has been a very polarizing controversial government. andy beshear, the son of the last democratic governor the name is well-known. we will focus on the disclose in areas because the beshear name is well-known look at the rural areas you see the blue out here you see the blue here. you watch in play out here most of this the vote count from the urban a and suburbingin' areas but andy beshear may have a big upset back in kentucky if you go back in time a lot more red in this area four years ago a lot more blue tonight. andy beshear running stronger in the smaller rural counties drifting to the republicans. he makes the gains in cities and suburbs that we have seen in other states and running strong notice rural areas representing helping had now up the 3% not there yet

they are planning no off days because cincinnati and chicago are so close. they are not that close really but they will have no off days so you needed a deeper pitching staff. really, the white sox that year were really stuck behind cicotte and williams and after that, there was a rookie who won 13 games and then read favor who is a red favor who is a hall of famer but he is sick. he is so sick he will not pitch even one game in the world series. the white sox basically have a 2. 5 man rotation going into the world series. they have a problem. cicotte and williams won 59% of all white sox games that year and if you take out favor, they won 71%. if the gamblers get to these guys, things look really good for a fix. pitching is really the achilles'heel. it is so big, it is really the achilles foot for the white sox that year. the white sox are going to lose the series. ar planning to lose in a games. two they are planning to lose in eight games. two of the most suspicious players include lefty williams. he has a 6.61 e.r.a. and that series when the american lea

cincinnati's right on the other side of the ohioti river there. these are pretty dense in terms of population here. about 10% of the state population lives in those three counties at the northern edge of the state right there. traditionally republican counties. bevin counted on these counties in 2015 to win, two of them actually went democratic. bevin's support was down ten-plus points in these counties relative to where it was in 2015. what's that? theat national story we've been seeing in the trump era. we saw this in 2018. we've seen this in special elections. suburban areas. higher income, college educated, traditionally republican in a places, they have been swinging away from the republican party of donald trump closer toward the democratic party. that seemed to be on display here in kentucky as well. so, again, for beshear to pull this thing out, to apparently pull this thing out, the margin you're looking at about 5,000 votes. everything had to go his way. it looks like just enough of it did. i didn't mean to write on the screen there. i d
