citizens united really unleashed spending by corporations on our elections. and the reasoning in that decision also paved the way for super pacs which are other vehicles that wealthy interests can use to spend in elections. citizens united really made a lot of people mad and it sparked a lot of great activism around the country that we'll hear more about. but at demos we see the problem in the legal landscape as going back farther to a case called buckley v. vallejo. that was decided in 1976. it was after the watergate scandal and around that time the congress had passed a fairly comprehensive package of money in politics reforms and some of the provisions in that package were challenged and the subject of this buckley litigation. so some of the provisions in that package were upheld and they remain part of our legal landscape today and that includes contribution limits so there are limits on the amounts that individuals can give to a particular candidate or party, but on the other hand, the buckley court struck down limits on spending and that includes limit

the needs of the american people and issue by issue whether it is climate change, whether it is citizens united the need to overturn that. whether it's pay equity for women, whether it's raising the minimum wage to a living wage. rebuilding our crumbling infrastructure. a tax system. look at clinton's positions and trump's positions and understand that one or the other of those two will be the next president of the united states and after you take a hard look at those two candidates and their issues, i think the con that people will reach is that clinton is far and away the superior candidate. >> a lot of clinton advisors are worried that a sizable number of your supporters might go to a third party candidate such as jill stein or gary johnson. gary johnson struggled this week to name a foreign leader whom he respects. take a listen. >> who is your favorite foreign leader? >> who is your favorite -- >> any one of the continents or countries? >> you have to do this. anywhere, any continent, canada, mexico, europe, asia, south america, name a foreign leader that you respect. >> i guess i'm having

the cars of citizens united, they can. you have george soros supporting the democrats.h brothers supporting republicans -- they're not really backing trump so much, but the down ballot candidates they are active in. it is sort of like a circus situation, where you have dancing polar bears, ipads being given out to volunteers, and you have not really how this in the past. nevada is a swing state now. it is unsure which way it will go. who knows by the time this heiress. but because everything is so influx, you have very wealthy people pouring money behind their candidates. mentioned citizens united, the supreme court ruling that made it possible for wealthy individuals to donate and influence elections and campaigns. ellen: it has certainly changed the landscape. it has allowed big givers, like sheldon abelson, to pour money into the campaign. it is interesting to see the super pac funding the ground game. in the features section, you profiles steve croman, and guy who owns more than 100 buildings in manhattan. ellen: steve croman has bought up many buildings. something

the second thing she would probably focus on because it's significant has been citizens united. and the whole question of money. arrow ran the 96 campaign on $135 million. you can't do that in pennsylvania. and we wind up with a situation today where massive amounts of that money is dark money, we do not know where it came from. we do not know the agendas of the people behind it. those two things, the media agglomeration and thismassive flow of money , i understand six or $8 billion in this campaign. >> thank you very much. >> tom edsall? >> on the second point, i disagree. trump ran a campaign that is actually low-budget. relatively speaking, he's gotten a huge amount of free media, like 2 billion i think the latest data shows that he has raised and spent much less then hillary and especially, beyond that even in his advertising in every state area i think the benefit shows that citizens united has not had the overwhelming consequence that we thought it would have. i think the other things that too would note, one in 1999, the high point of when everyone things were hunky-dory,

that's right, the public right to know, best being served right now by judicial watch, citizens unitednd wikileaks. joining me now congressman mark meadows, serves on the house oversight and foreign affairs committee, and it is great to see you. i have to say, this is really remarkable where we are with your party, your house leadership. i mean, when does the joke end? >> we've got to really focus on what you were just talking about, lou, that's the fact that we have hillary clinton, secretary clinton not answering questions, essentially taking the fifth saying she can't recall and seems to have unbelievable recollection of other facts and events. she's her own fact checker, and here we see with the very fundamentals of what is truthful and what is not. we need to focus on that. get behind our nominee and make sure that message gets out there because the american people are tired of a double standard, lou, they're tired of one for the well-connected like secretary clinton and one for guys on main street that would go to jail for doing the same thing. lou: or are going to jail. you know

he turn me down because he thinks citizen united was the right decision.have stood for overturning citizens united. i have stood for changing the way we fund elections. i have stood for reducing the power of lobbyists and i'm always going to be an independent voice against those things. >> it really does amaze me, she started her campaign with negative ads against me. i have a 97% attendance record, when i was a missing i was on official legislative business elsewhere or i was attending to my wife who is being operated on for cancer in the hospital. they still attacked me on having a poor attendance record when the fact is i have a 97% attendance record. it is very hypocritical. she started negative ads right from the get-go. she said false terms about my record in my business career right from the start and her campaign is funded by people who don't even live in this district by march. they're from all of the country but very few of them are from here. >> thank you very much. we are approaching the end of our broadcast. the formal questioning is now over.

and stop the rift that began even before citizens united with other supreme court decisions asaid if you are rich, you get to buy out the political system. the supreme court justices on the side of people, not on the side of big money. also justices to defend immigrant rights that will vigorously defend voter rights against voter id laws and other efforts that just enfranchise take away our constitutional rights to vote. also the supreme court justices that support women's rights and women's right to choose as well as workers rights. is there a justice currently on the core that fits that model? ms. stein: not in my opinion. host: let me ask you about the issue of black lives matter. what would you say to those people that say all lives matter? mr. baraka: of course all lives matter. but the black lives matter demand is a reflection of the fact that in reality, black lives do not matter here in the united states and really in most parts of the world. the slogan and the movement is an attempt to ensure that people understand that there will be a struggle to ensure that black li
