so the whole city was corrupt. the man who had been mayor before schmidt also he became a senator, united states later on. he was a man of great wealth. his father founded the earliest gold reserve bank here in san francisco. and he was a man of great privilege and great education. and he was also committed to the city beautiful movement, which was something that grew out of the white city movement of the world's fair of 1891, i think it was in chicago. and the other person who was very civic minded was a guy named rudolph spreckles. his father was the sugarcane in america. -- sugar caneking in america. the family owned the oceanic lines of every ship that went from san francisco to hawaii and to australia belonged to them. they owned the largest building west of the mississippi. they owned the "evening call" newspaper. owned fullly one third of one of the islands in hawaii. one of the biggest sugar producers in america. a very wealthy family. so spreckles went because he saw the vast corruption around him went to

city in america. and as a mayor assuming office with a number of issues all happening at the same time, i wonder to myself how can i best help the children, youth, and families in our city to overcome violence in the neighborhood and certainly to increase academic outcomes in our school system, making sure that our children are going to college or coming out of high school with a career that they're ready to enter into and, indeed, driving a wedge in the cradle to prison pipeline? and so in camden we have begun to embark on a holistic plan to enhance public safety in our city. our plan started with the transition to a camden county police force in 2013. and what i remember of that day was hearing the sounds of children at play as we made a switch over to a force that would allow us to put more than 400 officers patrolling our streets and our corridors and certainly our neighborhoods. and really launching a community policing paradigm that interacted with young people on a positive engagement. for inst

many fights in the city, as you know, about dogs in parks. we have 317 acres and god knows there's plenty of room for both of us. man and his best friend. early in the morning people before they go to work will walk their dogs or go on a jog themselves with their dogs. joggers love the park, there's 7 miles of hiking trails and there's off trail paths that hikers can take. all the recreational areas are heavily used on weekends. we have the group picnic area which should accommodate 200 people, tennis courts are full. it also has 3 playground areas. the ampitheater was built in 1972. it was the home of the first blues festival. given the fact that jerry garcia used to play in this park, he was from this neighborhood, everybody knows his reputation. we thought what a great thing it would be to have an ampitheater named after jerry garcia. that is a name that has panache. it brings people from all over the bay area to the ampitheater. the calls that come in, we'd like to do a concert at the jerry garcia ampitheater and we do everything we can t

to the city. and in fees. and i don't know if that is possible to send out a survey to or maybe the city could and i think that we are getting the fees and the department should be able to do that. it might be i think that it would be interesting to know what the city is receiving in fees from all of these festivals, and i agree that there is a big difference between when you have an oricale world or even an outside lands where you have an outside entity that is putting on a huge event as opposed to these more community driven events that are non-profit. and so do you, is that something that maybe we could look into to try to figure out what is the city getting from these events? >> sure. i mean that it is easy to do. trying to make a distinction between ticketed verses free event and that income stream does not exist for the folks that and many of the ones that spoke today don't charge fees, and sell tickets. >> but, you know i am happy to do that and we know now based on mr. eagan's report what the value is

and as a former city counciler in massachusetts and as well as being on the city property committee and i have kept myself out of politics because the 8 years was not easy and i am willing to tackle it now as i am. i am the director for the institute and i commute every day across the bridge, and so i am very interested in commuter issues, also my daughter is disabled and lives in the tender loin and she uses muni and bart very frequently not having a car and so i am very interested in disabled issues as well as being a city, and excuse me, a citizen's advocate, i am very interested? the impact of the parking and fees, on individuals, particularly people in the lower and middle and working classes in the city, and and i have brought up and in the past, and at a city council, and in the north hamp ton and a parking ban that happened in the winter that impacted the renters that could not park and it took me four years and i got it pass and they didn't have to, and not park when there wasn't snow, and which seemed to be kind of a no brainer, but, he could not, wrap their mind around it

that voice and that crisis to city hall. i also think that the cities imbalance of housing right now is especiallyly acrut and growing and the neighborhoods are experiencing the greatest brunt of development prusher especially the mission, but also long market street and other transit corridors. equally critical is there displacement crisis that undermine the diversity and nature of our working families, neighborhoods in the city. in 2014 we say 2 thousand evictions and over 400 housing units removed from rent control through ils act conviction squz condo convers and doesn't count the short term rentleds on the market pushing out affordable housing in the city. i think the city committed 700 million to transportation funding over the next 5 years by combining a 500 million bond and 30 million dollar per year set aside and transit impact fee. we need to secure mitch more for affordable housing. that is why the affordable housing bond is critical. my hope is we have a measure moving forward and that there is a lively dialogue

the mayor of my city i grew up in. i just came from celebrating my mothers 90th birtday in seattle and it is wonderful to see their parks. growing as all these cities grow. this is a great time to have this conference in san francisco. i'm proud to host it here and proud of the reck and park and commission and parks alliance and trust for public lands and all our private partners working together with us to not only expand, to maintain, to reutilize and refresh open spaces in our city. just this weekend as you were here opening we had sunday streets over in the bay view and it is exciting to always find out how people are celebrating those sunday streets. i know the other cities do that as well and it isn't just enough for us as a city to have the parks that we do have. we have to kick over streets once in a while and make sure those streets exhibit the kind of friendliness for at least a sunday to imagine and have our kids and families imagine how it is to play in open spaces without the challenges of the congested tr

i want to tell you a tail of 2 city colleges. when i started in 2003 i saw a large number of diversity studies courses, african american studies, gay lesbian stud as, latino american studies and a number of different arts classes that appealed to me. when i started there i was working on my aa degree and 2 dance certificate that the college offered. i had to leave school a little while after that because of some family issues and my fathers health but when i returned last year found a lot of things changed. there was a dance major program offered there i can work tworts fwr my aa and focus more on that, but at the same time the performing arts and education center wasn't present and found that a lot of money was diverted from that. a number of diversity courses offered in the past were significantly lowered and i found that disheartening. at the same time i was happy to see the faculty and student seemed to be more motivated on getting more people to class. the course repeatability [inaudible] made it difficult to get the numbers
