aaron: until nbc bay area came along, city hall wasn't doing its job. full of nightmares. the stacks of documents include eviction letters and lawsuits, all involving her landlord, who has repeatedly tried to evict her from her san francisco home of 27 years. elizabeth: where would i go? i mean, there's no way i could afford to live in the city. bigad: lee is under rent control, paying just $1,200 a month for her 2-bedroom apartment. she says her landlord, martin eng, started trying to get her to leave soon after he bought her building. he sued her in 2010, arguing the long-time flight attendant violated several parts of her lease, including using her home for illegal activities. bigad: he said you were using this apartment to run a prostitution ring, basically? elizabeth: yes, yes, and drug use. bigad: lee denies the accusations, but says to avoid a pricy legal battle, her renter's insurance decided to settle that lawsuit, which allowed her to stay in her home. but the landlord didn't stop trying to kick her out. bigad: you started getting eviction notices in the mail. el

(grant) and today's tsunami watch is a good reminder for those living near the coast about how to prepare. the town of pacifica... has an early warning system already in place. there are so many low lying areas west of highway one... you'll see signs warning people they are standing in a tsunami hazard zone.... and signs pointing out the way to a tsunami evacuation route. several years ago three tsunami warning sirens were installed along the beach. the sirens did not go off today, because it was only a tsunami watch, which means there was no imminent danger. but pacifica police says today was a good reminder that you never know when waves will go from surfable....to destructive.

kpix 5's jessica flores is live outside city hall in oakland with more details. ssica. >> reporter: good morning, kenny. that's right. this has been an issue debated here in oakland for over a year now. on one side, you have the city of oakland and environmental groups and on the other you have a developer who wants to bring coal through the port of oakland. there is a hearing today at the federal courthouse in san francisco. and that big question is whether the city has the right to ban the storage and handling of coal at the port of oakland. back in 2016, the city council voted to bar shipping coal through the city-owned marine terminal. the council cited environmental and health concerns. the developer phil tagami calls the regulations unconstitutional. the developer also says his plan for a new $250 million terminal at that old oakland army base will bring thousands of jobs to the port of oakland. >> it is a gateway to 8,000 jobs at the port of oakland. and we have a real objection to the council going back on its word and signed contracts. >> reporter: today

that you could have at city hall. but i recall kind of wanting to buy things and it got to be a little more difficult and it was because the mayor or the purchaser at that time was implementing policies to favor local businesses and neighborhood businesses here in san francisco. which was great. and then i got to know him later on working directly on a project that was the lowe's down at bayshore, which was extremely controversial at the time. it had been home depot and lowe's and he was involved as the director of public works. and very much focused on the issue of day laborers and how they would be affected by that project. i think he had that same, you know, kind of thinking that the mayor's office didn't change him. his approach to things were very much about how it would benefit the people of san francisco and i think that is great. and it was a pleasure to be appointed by him to this body and to work with him and get to know him. i'll miss him personally. i think he was a great, funny guy. and i'll miss his appr

i am can win, the surprising decision rocks city hall, and even today, there are hurt feelings about that move. terry moriarty joins us from the city. she spoke to the supervisor who was talking about it. >> that is right, the supervisor has actually received death threats as a result of his decision to vote in mark farrell has -- as the mayor. so, while the progressives are happy around city hall, the moderates are having a bit tougher time. it was a city hall stutter, acting mayor was out and mark farrell was in. he was a brief close ally on the board, melita:. >> it is a deal that most city hall insiders say happened between progressives and farrell, who is considered a moderate. there was backlash from replacing the city's first african-american woman with a white male. >> i think that what you saw last night, was not so much about elevating one white man, it was about sending a message to another white man, a tech titan billionaire named ron conway that san francisco cannot be bought. >> he backed him and it backfired. >> was in communication with you? >> ron conway has tried to

it has been a long night here at city hall. as you said, mark farrell has become the interim mayor. here is what he had to say in his message to the city, just a few minutes ago. >> i heard the emotion in the room. i felt that also. i will be a mirror for every single san francisco resident. my focus and my job is to represent everyone in the city of san francisco, no matter their ethnicity or religion, my job is to represent everybody and i will do that. >> reporter: we obtained these photos of his swearing-in in the mayor's office at city hall tonight. he was surrounded by his relatives, his wife and his children who came down here for the unexpected and sudden change of events. it was a very emotional, contentious evening. here is a little bit of what happened, leading up to the vote. backers of supervisor london breed were outraged . the san francisco board of supervisors voted 6-3 to appoint mark farrell as interim mayor in london breed's place. >> we have chosen mark farrell to be the interim mayor. >> reporter: the vote came after hours of public comment, the line of people st

the flag outside to city hall park, across the street, and he lit it on fire. so looking at this picture, there's city hall park. not too many people standing around. what's interesting, this was about two, three, maybe four weeks after the big protest in central park, the anti-vietnam war protest, where there were hundreds of thousands of white college students burning the american flag. well, kendall smith was arrested for inciting riot. not much of a riot going on there. and what's even more fascinating, i don't have any arrest records from the previous event in central park, but i can't recall reading the paper and seeing hundreds of white college students being arrested for burning the american flag. he was arrested, thrown in the clink and next day the "times" had a big article about it. again, two columns down the metro section. but no photos. not a single photo. they continued to write stories about his legal case. never, ever publishing these photos showing that there was never a riot. >> watch the entire program at 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. eastern on m

it was a chaotic night inside of city hall and calls of racism and sexism. amy hollyfield spoke to the mayor moments ago and is live in city hall, hi, amy. >> reporter: we spent the morning here, and i have to say, city hall's in a bit of disbelief this morning, the talk of the hallways, with many offices telling us as we walked in, we don't know quite yet what's going on. it was quite a night last night. give us time to get organized. we caught up with the interim mayor who is here on the job. we actually saw him dashing into one of his very first meetings as interim mayor. take a look. it's one of the -- if you blink, you miss it. he's headed into, in this shot, a meeting with his department heads. we saw the fire and police chiefs here, public works, all telling us the mood was upbeat and forward looking. we heard applause coming from the meeting, and he talked to us after the meeting. he said the focus is on services like police and potholes running a city. he will need to appoint, though, his replacement on the board of supervisors. >> my goal is over t

live outside of san francisco city hall. that's one of the biggest events in the bay area expected for tomorrow. >> reporter: a lot has happened in the last year. organizers of tomorrow's event say they are hoping to harness the energy of the events across the bay area as they beat and try the turn that into political action in the next couple years. outside san francisco city hall, just a few blocks away at the offices of equal rights advocates, employees have been getting ready. >> we've been pushing hard for women's march registrations. >> they spent the afternoon make go protest signs and they're coordinating how to get the t-shirts and buttons. they're hoping for a bigger turnout than last year. >> we've learned that if you come for some of us, you come for all of us. >> they were expecting to show solidarity because women were not the only ones expected. organizers are hoping for more than just a demonstration in the streets. they want people to get out and vote over the next couple of election cycles. >> we're centeri

activists linked arms outside oakland city hall tonight, singing. singing and holding signs reading sanctuaries. their message to oakland's police chief, stop working with i.c.e. unless there is proof of a clear public safety threat. a resolution they approved tonight, spelling it out clearly. opd shall not provide law enforcement assistance including traffic report to i.c.e. except to respond to a public safety emergency. council member rebecca kaplan proposed the resolution. >> wasting law enforcement, going after immigrants is the wrong choice. >> reporter: last summer, two oakland police officers handled traffic control during what ice called a criminal human trafficking raid. turns out the undocumented man who was detained has never been charged with trafficking or any other crime. >> our community needs to feel safe to come forward. as victims of crime, they need to be able to talk to our police and trust they will not be harassed. >> tonight's policy change forces police to report to the public safety committee any time they work with i.c.e.
