i was talking to claire mccaskill a few days ago.ok at the failures of his early life, look at the fact that his father was a failed businessman, that he came back from the war a failed businessman in his 30s, not knowing what he was going to do, constantly derided by all those around him. there is no reason why this man should have been as confident as he was, but he had a really strong sense of self. and when he came to washington, he was mocked and derided by "the new york times" as a rube, and you're right. regardless of whatever attacks came his way, he did what he believed was right and as claire mchas said, he always said he slept best after a tough decision and a controversial decision that he knew was right. and one of the things that i loved about truman's leadership was he surrounded himself with the best and brightest. the thing i love about the george marshall story when fdr said you agree with me, don't you, george? marshall said, no, mr. president, i don't agree with you at all. that, yes, fdr elevated him after that,

we want to bring into the conversation now former democratic missouri senator claire mccaskill and conservative columnist and editor of "national review," rich lowry. both are nbc news political contributors. claire, let me start with you and this idea. i think andrea brought up this notion that biden had been painted with a socialist brush very early on, and it was hard to get rid of. do you buy into that? >> i think it may resonate more in some of the communities in miami-dade and in florida, namely, those cuban americans. but if you look at the gauntlet that trump has to run, he may get by florida, but he's got big ones ahead of him yet. he's got to get through north carolina. he's got to get through georgia. he's got to get through the really tough one, which is pennsylvania, before he can think about getting re-elected. so, it's going to be a long night. it looks like florida is not going to be decisive one way or the other for a while. but you know, everybody was hoping it would be over early by winning florida big. you can take a deep breath, grab a bottle of water, and hang in there. it

with us once again, nbc news political contributors claire plk ca mccaskill. conservative columnist and editor of "national review" rich lowry. thanks to both of you. senator, first off, donald trump has just been declared the winner of your home state. and he seems to be doing well in ohio. does it give you great concern about the blue wall and joe biden's strength as this race seems to be pushing now toward the midwest? >> no, because you have to remember that donald trump won missouri by almost 20 points 4 years ago. he won ohio by i think close to ten, eight or nine. so, in wisconsin and michigan and pennsylvania, it was all, like, less than one point. so, they were close to being in the other column in the last election. that's why the strategy has been from the beginning to take the three states back that trump won in a very close election with a candidate, frankly, fair or unfair, had very high unfavorables, unlike joe biden who still ended up at the end of a presidential campaign with more people saying they like him than not. >> let's go to you, rich
