ktvu's claudine wong join us live from the scene. claudine, how do things look now?>> reporter: tori, the coroner is on scene now. the accident is closer to being cleared up. you can see the white van just behind the brown van as they work to get the victim out of the vehicle. that brown flitched multiple times, killing the driver this morning. the chp says a white pickup truck was in this carpool lane when that minivan actually went across three lanes and hit that truck. the chp tells us what happened next. >> the van came across from the number 4 lane into the number 1 lane contacting the right front corner of the pickup truck. that sent the van over onto its roof where it tumbled multiple times and came to rest in the 2 -- in the number 2 lane. >> reporter: the driver and passenger of the pickup truck are fine. they've left the scene. i want to show you the skid marks where this van flipped. and you can see the chp officers walking down the highway. this accident goes 500 to 600 feet. they said it started very far back and the vehicle just flipped so many times th

claudine wong is live in the castro district with more on the transit mess. when you look at the picture behind you, you wonder how did this driver get into the ton. >> that's right. everyone we talk to say, i don't get why this driver would go into this tunnel and how this driver would get so far. you can see the drews -- crews walking in the tunnel right now. this is at the castro safeway. this is at dubose and church. they are trying to figure out how to get this vehicle out. and from talking to them, they said their plan is to -- is to use the train right now and go into the tunnel as it is supposed to and use the power to pull that car out of there so they can get muni traffic back up and running. this is gonna take a while. i want to take you on the other side of castro or church street. big crowds with people trying to figure out how they are gonna get to work today. they've been leading them up on these shuttle trains and buses. i have talked to people who say, well, it won't be our typical commute to work. you will have to be patient -- you will have

claudine wong joins us with more information and new video, claudine? >> reporter: the bar is actually open until 2:00 a.m. so we believe it was opened when police were called hereby a bystander. three people were injured, two stabbed one shot but police have confirmed the shooting victim was hit outside the front of this business. they saw a couple of ambulances which responded to the call but it turns out they were not needed because all three were taken to a hospital with a private car. at the time, people were still gathering information but here is what police were able to tell us about what happened. >> there were shots fired and we responded to the scene and when we arrived two people were injured and a half hour later we had another pursuit at the scene with a shooting victim. >> reporter: a dodge charger was also taken from the scene and we don't know how it is connected but police left moments after it was taken away. it was parked in a stall in front of this business. we do not have any suspect information and nobody has been arrest and again

claudine wong joins us from the scene with what happened this morning, claudine? >> reporter: just a few minutes ago, police cleared out of here after taking a silver dodge charger and it appears that was the last thing they were able to do before they needed to get out of here. at this hour we have some new information about the victims in this early morning violence. we are told two stabbing victims and one gunshot victim and we are told they are taken to the hospital and their injuries are considered non- life threatening. we know it started at 1:45 this morning police were flagged down by a by stander. they got to the scene and there was confusion because the victims were taken to the hospital by a private car instead of by an ambulance and the officers told us what he knew. >> witnesses saw gunshots and when they arrived police arrived and saw victims were wounded at the scene. >> reporter: back here and the woodside grill on the 500 block, police were out here for a while gathering evidence and they were inside and outside we saw overturned chairs when we go

good morning, claudine. >> reporter: good morning, dave. let's give you a look at san francisco county jail number three. it's there in the background. we are standing in front of it here. a new jail system behind it. built in 1934 the conditions first caught sheriff michael eye when he was a young attorney. his campaign promise back in 1979 was to close it. and here we are in 2012 finally seeing that campaign promise fulfilled. >> it has been a more than 15 yearlong journey to get to this point. >> reporter: add five more years to that statement. that was sheriff back in 2006 when he took me and other reporters on a tour of the jail. right before the last inmate moved out. the story of that jail includes a lot of failed bond members and class action lawsuit with the court declaring conditions so bad they violated the constitutional rights of inmates. now in 2006 the inmates moved out of that old jail and into the new jail. that's what you are looking at now. they moved into a state of the art facility. the old jail has sat there. until tod

claudine wong is live from the scene. everything is back to normal now? >> reporter: yes, it is. the train is moving behind me. another train is coming out behind it. that is where this driver took his suv into the tunnel. that man now identified as 40- year-old scott mitchell, charged with suspicion of dui, driving on train tracks and failure to obey a traffic sign. it was not how people wanted to start their morning. shuttles were put in place of trainses about 6:00 a.m. after man drove his suv right into the muni nunlt cast roach frantic muni workers went running after him. >> he was booking. we tried to chase after him. he all of a sudden, we don't see him anymore. senate do not enter signs did not stop him, neither did the screaming workers. about 2 1/2 blocks in this wall finally did. workers walked the driver out of the tunnel and into the hands of the police. >> he was pretty ineastboundry ated getting out of the car. he said he didn't know -- he's not from here. >> two hours into there incident, our cameras caught this driver almost doing the same thing to the disbelief

ktvu's claudine wong is there.talked to the homeowner about what alerted him to the fire. >> reporter: yes, we're talking with the family taking this all in stride. they've heard this fire before they saw it and look at what it's done to their cars and their garage. this white car you're seeing in fronts of you, that was given to the 17-year-old girl who lives here just about a month ago. her mom's car is in the garage and her dad's car also out in the driveway, all cars including this truck and atv destroyed by the fire. but the family says they are taking this in stride because they're glad everyone got out safely. this all started about 5 this morning. that's when the homeowner say they heard the fire. they were all sound asleep inside, the family of four. mom, dad, two kids. then the homeowner says he heard a noise from the garage that woke him up. >> combo of things, lot of noise, things cracking and popping. and got up and saw the fire coming out of the garage so got everybody out. >> it was going very good.

claudine wong is live with new information from a witness and what we're learning from officials. >> reporter: good afternoon. we're at the bison paddock. you can see the adult bison that are in this enclosure. next to it up on the hill, that's where the baby bison are being kept. you can see them up there now. yesterday morning a dog somehow got into that enclosure and yesterday night the smallest in a herd of seven baby bison was dead. this man heard the commotion near the buffalo paddock, a woman with several dogs calling to one dog who had made it inside. >> she was calling the dog trying to get him back. he was over there barking. i didn't see him until he had jumped over the hill. he was coming back this way. >> reporter: the baby bison were huddled together as the dog chased them over a hill. >> i just saw them. they ran over the hill there. the lady was sitting there and kept calling. there was no response. >> reporter: this morning park and regulation ration and zoo officials confirm add small dog got into that paddock and injured a baby bison. >> it's very disturbing. we're

claudine wong joins us from the scene. >> reporter: police finally just told us what happened out here. this started as a burglary call and turned into a high speed chase. police called off the chase but this is where it ended. the intersection of mowry and chevy. one of the vehicles involved in front of a fire station. there is another vehicle in this parking lot. let's take you through what happened. let's first talk but the fa fatality in the one car in front of the fire department. in that vehicle police say an innocent victim who just happened to be in the path of the suspect car fleeing from police, again they say the high speed chase had been called off at the time of the crash. let's talk about the other car though, because that is the suspect vehicle. police say that vehicle had three people inside of it when it flipped over as part of this chase. one person was found by police inside that car with life- threatening injuries. one person was arrested just across the street. and then there was another person who was still on on the loose. we want to show you video of the arrest

good morning, claudine. >> reporter: good morning, pam. we are just outside the gates of the jail here in san bruno. i want to give you a look behind me. you can see the front of the brand new galicia that is the operate -- brand new jail that is the front of the operating jail. behind me is the jail will be demolished. that san francisco county jail number three when it comes down outgoing sheriff will be making good on a campaign promise that is more than three decades old. i want to show you video inside jail number three. back in 2006 when i took a tour through it. it was considered deplorable in terms of its conditions. lawsuits forced it to shut down. and this is what the sheriff said then. >> we'll see that there are windows that are broken outs with plastic stuffed over them. we have used enough duct tape to go from here to the moon. >> reporter: that year the inmates left the jail for good. this will be the sheriffs last official act. he said in a statement never did i realize that getting it done would take years of bureaucratic

claudine wong is live at the scene as many it still smoldering there? >> reporter: it is. we're been smelling it, a little of it. and when the sun came up you could see it in that direction and still see white smoke over there. firefighters are there right now just putting more water on it. you can still see the foam from yesterday's firefight as they tried to put out all that brush that was caught on fire. when the downed lines came down. last night they first responded, some people reported hearing sounds of explosion, there were multiple calls to 911. the grass was on fire. power was out to almost 400 people. then power was restored. the fire was out p pg&e has been looking for a cause ever since. we just spoke to the spokesperson who says they're hoping this is wrapped up by 5 p.m. tonight. >> when you talk about transmission lines, there's definitely high voltage so it will take a lot of safety procedures and a lot of work to make sure our equipment is restored and safe. >> any idea why this happened? >> we don't. the cause of the outage still under investigation and

[applause] >> and i heard the supervisor kim has joined us. thank you for being here. >> i look at david and jan and i would not be here if it were not for them. you have heard the professional side of it. 20 years ago, i was a very young reporter in montgomery, alabama, and our -- they decided, they had come out to san francisco and decided that they needed someone that looked just like her, and i was the only one in the newsroom in montgomery, alabama that look like her. do you know they forced me to do this show, and that started me on my road to coming out to san francisco and the bay area to live and work here and become part of the community. i thank jan for that. i had no idea who she was, but that is how i got my start in the coming out to california. on a quick personal note

good morning, claudine. >> reporter: good morning, tori. yes. it's been a long time in the making. we actually talked to a contractor working in the jail. it's behind the new jail sitting there. it may not come as a big surprise but that old jail is riddled with asbestos and lead paint, crews have been protesting themselves. sheriff hennessey told me the place was literally being held together by duct tape. but the problems found by then wereler decades old. sheriff hennessey promised to close it in 1979, in his first campaign for sheriff. the supervisor in charge of abatement working inside the jail talked about what conditions were like now. >> it's filled with a lot of asbestos, and so we wear a purified air respirator. we don't even want to breathe the fibers in there. >> reporter: you've had to, i'm sure, do a lot of abatement projects. how bad is this one in comparison? >> this one here is saturated. we have air monitors and we have different personnel wearing equipment in the breathing zone. >> reporter: he says today the wrecking ball will hit the build but this will simply

ktvu's claudine wong has been there all morning. what triggered the shooting?eporter: that's what police are trying to figure out. we're not even sure at this point if this incident began inside or if this was simply a parking lot situation. now that we have some daylight, we can show you just how big this parking lot is to the left side of this bar and grill. it actually is a pretty big parking lot and we saw police officers stationed throughout this area. we know the person that was shot was shot out front. we're not sure about the two people who were tabbed. police are trying -- stabbed. police are trying to figure out what happened. we want to give you a look at the scene early this morning, it happened about 1:48 this morning. this bar and grill, according to the website, still had its bar open until 2:00, so pretty close to closing time when this all went down. police tell us a bystander actually flagged down a plifr but a -- police officer but a lieutenant told us officers were nearby and heard gunshots. >> officers heard gone shuts at the creek side inn
