abc's clayton sandell joins us from stevens pass with the very latest. good morning, clayton. >> reporter: this morning, megan and recognize. this happened just after noon in the stevens pass ski area. a group of about a dozen skiers had left the ski area boundaries. now, that's not illegal. but it is certainly -- takes you into more of a wilderness area. and the school was descending a back country route when the snow gave way. three skiers were killed, unfortunately. they were not -- they were dug out of the snow but they could not be revived. now, one of the skiers in that group was megan micheleson, who is espn's free skiing editor. she was skiing with the group and reports that the mountain gave way and reports that the people who were trapped were carried between 2,000 and 3,000 vertical feet down the mountain. now, one of the other skiers with the group was professional skier elsie sagstaad, who was also trapped in the avalanche but as you mentioned was able to deploy this sort of air bag device that inflates and essentially the idea is it makes y

so, abc's clayton sandell is in the thick of the storm for us, right now, in denver, tonight. >> reporter: the storm is so bad, it turns anyone who ventures out into a ghostly apparition. heavy snow, plus high wind, creating a whiteout, blizzard mess. shutting down neighborhood streets and freeways. countless crashes littered icy roads. this one, grinding deliveries to a halt. what kind of a wallop are we getting? >> this one will be the single heaviest february snowstorm in 100 years. >> reporter: denver normally gets six inches of snow in february. today, they got three-times that much in just one storm. new avalanche warnings went out for the mountains. while a small army of snowplows crisscrossed denvers streets. drivers have to clear 3,200 miles of roadway, equal to a trip to new york and back. it's not cheap. >> we have 126 light plows out like you see behind me. >> reporter: ahead of those snowplows, we skied into neighborhoods still trying to dig out. some are enjoying the storm. you don't mind this? >> no. as long as i can stay home. yep. >> reporter: and kids who are supposed to
