it is constant erosion. >> yes, when you are up top of the cliffs you are going to be away from the cliffs because they are loose, but down there on sand walking you know to stay away, because there are clearly signs that it does slide every now and then, and so it is something that people are aware of, and the other thing is that this is a great place for dogs. and on our air over the past months and years you will see the people with their dogs stuck on the side of the cliffs. >> we showed the rescues before. >> they call in the firefighters and the helicopters the try to help out. and i mean, it is a precarious place, and you know that there is a risk there. it is something that you should really be aware of. >> and dogs can run off leash there? >> yes. and it is one of the few places that dogs can run off leash, and the circle there, dan, that we have been talking about and ft. funston opened in the early 1900s and world war ii they installed 16 inch guns at battery davis and that is what the circles are, and they were the foundations for the 16 inch guns, and the foundations were up a

the warnings about the unstable cliffs are virtually everywhere. add to that the number of big storms recently, loose soil, soil that is impacted with water and you have a recipe for disaster. >> we will continue our live team coverage, andrea.>> reporter: well there are, as you said signs all over fort funston warning people to stay away from the edges of the cliffs here. we are talking about some very soft soil here at fort funston, coastal erosion has been a constant problem. in fact one that the u.s. geological survey has been studying extensively for at least the past three years at this point. a short time ago we spoke with eight landslide expert from uc berkeley's environmental science department, here is what he had to say.>> when we have these big rainstorms, they saturate the ground and that weakens the soils and rocks. and what happened today was directly in response to this rainfall.>> now of course this part of fort funston is very popular with dog walkers and people looking to exercise. there are lots of signs warning to stay away fro

these cliffs are very unstable. there are signs all over this area, but this is a very popular area with dog walkers and people looking for exercise. they are looking for someplace to go that is beautiful and then they go past the signs that say don't walk any further. we talked to many people who didn't know they were aware of the danger. >> i can see where there's evidence of it having gone down before, but i just -- i don't know. ignorance is bliss or something. i just ignored it really. >> reporter: it's a wild area out here. i mean do you ever worry about problems? >> well, i'll tell you what. stay away from the edge and i keep the dog away from it the edge because i do know that people and dogs have gone over and, you know, the reason you do is you get too close and it's all kinds of signs and everything and just makes sense to stay away from it i think. >> it sounds like part of the cliff collapsed down onto the beach. >> more often than not we'll go looking for fossils and whatnot on this side of the cliff.

it's a very large cliff. it looks like about half the cliff eroded away. i've been talking with regulars here who say they've been eroding away for years. down on the bottom of the beach here there's a big concrete, piece of concrete. that used to be up top of the cl of how much of this cliff has been eroding. there's probably no indication that that was going to happen as people were walking on the beach, enjoying the day. two women walking a dog. out of nowhere this cliff just collapsed on them. so as we just heard from mindy talmadge, there's 50 firefighters here. they're still hopeful at this time that they're going to locate this woman and they're hopeful that she could be alive. she mentioned there could be an air pocket. the tide seems to be going out. it's going to be low tide later tonight so that's good news for searchers. but again, they're just continuing to dig and police are here doing their best to keep people away from the scene. they're hoping the dogs can help out and let firefighters know where exactly to dig. but this search has been go

of firefighters there looking over the cliff because somewhere down that cliff about 15 feet down is a dog that's stuck in the mud and debris of that cliff. it took firefighters awhile, i am told, to find the dog because they were trying to look for the owner. the owner was nowhere in sight. once they found the owner, the owner was able to tell them where the dog was. and then it took awhile for firefighters to decide how to extricate that dog from the cliff. at first they wanted to take a ladder, go down from the top of the cliff, but that -- they decided it would probably be easier and safer to go and try to get the dog from below the cliff from where the dog is. so that's their intention. that's their plan and that's exactly what they are going to try to do, is to rescue the dog from the bottom of the cliff. >>> now, the call came in about 3:00 this afternoon. as i said, they had a difficult time locating the owner. fire fighters want us to tell you guys and the public that if you have to come here, to walk your dog, that you keep the dog on a leash. and also to be aware of your s

the signs over here, show that it is an unstable cliff. is a do not approach the cliff, danger. that is the beach, so you will see the signs around the park. some of the bluffs over the ocean are 200 feet high, and so people are warned to be aware, do not go too close to the edge. we don't know how close this pair of hikers with their dog were, and hikers i have talked to here today say that since the recent storms of last weekend heavy rain, they have noticed that the grounds seem softer, saturated, and more unstable. we also see a fire department personnel here, and there is a gurney on standby as the search goes on, and so what we are doing here, this is as close as we can get for the time being, but as we heard a cadaver dog is on route to the site, and time is not on their side. as the down apartment has mentioned, there might be an air pocket that is person hiker might be in, but the weight of the sand is crushing, so at this point rescue does not seem likely as time goes on. so that is our situation here. were trying to get closer to the water's edge and give you a look a

now, the dog was stuck about 15 feet off that cliff. firefighters decided to do the rescue from the bottom of that cliff and not from the top because they felt it was safer and easier. it took awhile at first because they couldn't find the owner who called in the 911 at around 3:00 this afternoon. now, we were able to talk to the owner after they were reunited. take a listen. >> he just ran away. he's tired. he's been out there six hours. >> how did it happen? >> dogs will be dogs. >> reporter: well, he says -- matt says he and body will go home, get warm, and have a really nice dinner. firefighters told me that it's going to be awful here tonight. it's going to be breezy and it's going to be rainy. the worst round of wind and rain will come probably after midnight tonight so if you do have to walk your dog, firefighters suggest -- in fact, encourage you to do it with a leash. do not let them run wild because it is dangerous here and the weather will certainly make it even worse than it is now. reporting live from fort funston, vic lee,
