we'll go over to clint watts,, national security analysts. lint, when you hear about this death toll, and d.c. the pictures of this individual who managed to inflict a great deal of pain and death initial amount of time, what are you thinking in terms of potential profile of an individual who can use what looks to be a sort of ar-15 style weapon so effectively so quickly? >> alex, i think the question that comes to mind, especially with these images, when you look at how the individual holds that weapon, it's hard to understand multiple magazines those high capacity magazines. those are things goodwin to determine, looking at the scope and flashlight, that's a tactical sit that someone put together. so the question is always, did this person build it on their own? do they have assistance? is there a group? it seems to be a lone shooter. -- and the other thing is, the pants and here you see the air, i can't see it very well. but those looked to be targeted -- cargo pants of technical pants, military style clothing, law enforcement style clothin

i want to bring in clint watts, national security analyst. clint, if you would, and we're looking at the pictures of gaza, 5:47, the port we have been kind of focusing on all morning here. there is still, you know, fire on those two looks like mid-sized boats. give us if you would a larger perspective of where it is that this is happening, and what are the areas that we're seeing. >> yeah, jose, so, matt who was just there talking to us, is up here, right along the southern lebanon border, northern israel border. one of the big questions is would israel get into another fight, another front in this war, with hezbollah. hezbollah, a much larger, much stronger actually terrorist group that operates in southern lebanon, backed by the iranians. they have more sophisticated missiles and more of them. as you noted, very different sort of conflict here as opposed to down in gaza. what we have been focused on with richard engel and ashkelon and those images there you're seeing of the ship in gaza city is this area right here. when you look at what the

joining me now to get started is clint watts.ecurity at george washington university, and a foreign policy research institute fellow. he is also a former special agent for the fbi on its joint terrorism task force. he is also an nbc news analyst. clint, thanks for getting started. obviously you are waking up to this news as many americans are, as they're tuning into us right now. walk us through what you are aware of, what happens. i think one of the questions we have is how is it possible that israel did not possibly anticipate this attack? >> yeah, katie, it is a super tense time in israel. we need to put that in its background. i was there in june, you could see a lot of demonstrations, a lot of issues in the west bank. it was extremely tense time. this is as the government, as, well inside israel, was really kind of fighting with itself and its people. there were lots of protests in the street around at some point. this is also a time of tension inside israel. at the same time, it's a time of dramatic change with israel, in t

here's msnbc national security contributor, clint watts, clint?ys, israel has started the second phase of the ground invasion of gaza. look back to last thursday night, we saw them conduct what is known as a breach operation, getting through the perimeter fronts to the north. a couple of days later, they did a second breach and created what we calm an assembly area, there in the north of gaza. that's likely to cut off any forces from the hamas militants who might try and move north for the main effort which we're seeing this morning. juhor, is an area right here. we have combat operations right there. infantry, tanks, all of the israeli military in shoot outs there. also moving up the main artery toward gaza city, it looks like they're in constant contact. hamas militants, israeli military, firing up and down the streets. this is going to be the area we might see intense conflict. lots of artillery. secondly, everyone wants to know about the humanitarian situation down here. some trucks are getting across the border. not enough trucks from egypt i

joining us now is national security analyst clint watts. clint, where could these folks go? notice from the orders that were given from the israeli government, they told them to leave the north. that is principally the gaza city area that's the main metropolitan area there, holds more than probably 1 to 2 million people. and told them to move towards the south. the south is principally where we used to see humaneitarian aid delivered through egypt, and there's the gate and usually a cross of goods and supplies there, usually not people. you'll see goods there and that is one transit point. there's people at rapa. and in between those two gates is where you're seeing a lots of the population move as really a place or safe harbor trying to get away from what they think the main conflict area will be, which is up towards further north towards gaza city. >> clint, maybe i didn't hear you, but when we show that map those places right now, people can't get through right now, though, right? >> that's correct. the egyptian government at least of right now from what i've been observi

with us now, clint watts. clint, thanks for being with us. what do you make of news that a main sheriff had previously flagged the government as dangerous and blasted out to law enforcement in the state? >> yeah. it's gonna be rough, i think, looking back, lindsey, on this. because there are several indications that this gentleman had a lot of mental health issues. there's new reporting out about him actually trying to apply for a silencer. so there were lots of indicators and warnings, and when we look back, 20 years ago, we built what's called a suspicious activity reports system with dhs. the fbi was partnering in that. and when we had specific activity like this, it would get reported in. and that should be something that helps speed assessments for the atf in terms of gun registration, and all these cases here, there were many warnings, but nothing occurred. so when we look back, i think it'll be something that will again go to and say, how did someone end up with a weapon? and even admitted to having mental health issues, still having i

let's go to nbc news national security analyst clint watts. clint, the person of interest, as they're calling him as of right now, is still out there. the man who they believe perpetrated the shootings with an ar-style rifle at two separate locations. from your experience, how to you approach this? they found the vehicle they believe he was in. they haven't found him. they've locked down the town of lisbon. that's where they found the car. where do you begin to track this person down? >> willie, last night, it was the worst-case scenario, and you knew it right away. looking at the image of the shooter, he seems to be someone who knows how to handle a weapon. when you're law enforcement, you've seen him go through and shoot and kill multiple people, the way he's holding the weapon, the equipment, you're looking at extra magazines taped together it looks like, high-capacity scopes, cargo pants. this is somebody who knows what they're doing. you can tell by the way they're standing and holding the weapon. imagine you're law enforcement. you're try

also with me, former fbi special agent and msnbc national security analyst, clint watts., what do we know about authorities in the u.s. ramping up security, what's the latest you're hearing on this? >> here's the bulletin, and i'm going to read you two critical paragraphs. number one, we have observed they say, an increase in threats to these communities, specifically jewish communities, including reports of physical assaults, bomb threats, online calls for mass casualty events and homeland security and the fbi, says that loan offenders inspired by or reacting to the ongoing israel-hamas conflict pose the most likely threat to americans, especially jewish americans, muslim, and arab communities across the country. as a result of that, we have seen major police departments nationwide ramping up their security posture, every nypd officer in new york is now in uniform. they have curtailed training. they have also stepped up patrols here in washington, d.c. for two weeks now. they've dramatically increased patrols in and around synagogues. it is a situation to kind of go off

i want to bring in now clint watts, former fbi special agent, and msnbc national security agent. clint, this is indeed a mass casualty event and these numbers are taking up higher. in a short nary tragedy. dead, 55 to -- injured. three locations. let me first get your reaction to one person in, what we believe -- again, we are just confirming details here. what we believe is an hour, between 7:15, and 8:15, visited three locations, and was able to inflict this much pain, this much horror in the city of lewistown, maine. your thoughts? >> yeah. it is just devastating to see this happen time and time again. i think the other thing is the images you see, which law enforcement has gotten out very quickly. as frank noted, that is what they felt like they needed to do to identify this person, and try to bring them in. those images that you are showing right there are bad news. you can just look at it. it is an ar-15 style weapon with a scope. we face -- you are looking at pants that seem to be some sort of military looking cargo pant in those could be combat style boots of some sort. th

let's go to national security analyst for nbc news and msnbc, clint watts. what more do we have new this morning you can share with us about the way israel is responding here? >> yesterday an interesting day. you really saw the israeli military kick into gear. several things happened. one, you saw richard engel here near ashkelon where some attacks were coming in from gaza but the ire dome took out a lot of those rockets. in this area here this sderot, they believe they've cleared most of it. there was a brief gun battle in ashkelon. they believe they have cleared the israeli side and cordoned off what is gaza. what is that ground invasion going to look like rich around was talking about and how will they do it? all of this area here, the buildup of troops looking at a much wider war, the second thing are the air strikes inside gaza city. several mosques and a refugee camp area were hit yesterday. you are seeing strikes against naval targets out in the water and much more larger attacks, i think you'll see, up and down the gaza strip as the day goes on. the

is in lewiston, also with me, tom winter and former fbi specialist and national security analyst clint watts. and i know you have some new information, tom, on the firearm that was used but what else are you learning from law enforcement right now? >> i think dps making it clear they don't know where this individual is at this point. they are tracking down a number of leads. they have gone over all sorts of details abouthis person's background, specificay locations and so they're kind of ticking things off in a kind of a methodical manner at this point. to your point, some information about the gun that we've just been able to confirm with my colleague jonathan dienst e, the weapon was purchased legally earlier this year and all indication it was before that mental health incident that you referenced here just a few seconds ago. there's no indication at this point, though, i really caution that these type of reviews take time, there's no indication that there was a law or a step that was missed as it stands on the books in maine that would have prohibited this individual from possessing this

. >> joining us now is national security analyst clint watts. clint, one of the things that esther just talked about is understanding what this thing is that's happening in gaza. the new york times is reporting that an invasion of gaza will happen soon, with the goal of capturing gaza city, which is by far the largest part of gaza, and getting rid of hamas's leadership. we do believe that israel has started some incursions. i don't know if it's a full ground scale war, but the taking of gaza city is a remarkably, remarkably content -- complicated undertaking. >> that's right. you really couldn't think of a worse environment to try and take from the outside, and any urban area, and we saw this if you're familiar with mariupol last year, in ukraine. if you're familiar with any of the bottles that are wrought in the major cities. you're looking at really, really complex maneuvers. and they always say in an urban environment, your speed goes down about 90% in terms of your ability to advance in the city versus open ground. it could go on for a very l

joining me right, now former fbi special agent in msnbc national security analyst, clint watts. t, thank you. so it is extraordinary what went down. were you surprised by the scope, and the apparent level of coordination of these attacks as well? the complexity. the scale of this assault. this has many people believing that hamas must have had some kind of outside support, possibly from iran. what are your thoughts on this? >> yeah, in terms of just the intelligence from the israeli side, it is shocking to me having been there a couple of times, haven't contacts with the war on terror, the israeli intelligence services. it's just shocking that they didn't catch this. they have unprecedented technical intelligence. they have incredible human intelligence in ways that very few countries have. to miss this in a coordinated way, as you noted, you were talking about multiple cities and villages. 2200 rockets, all of this would be, we saw resources, we should've seen resources be built up. communications being coordinated. training and or planning in terms of these assaults. and then i

and, also joining us for the conversation is nbc news national security analyst clint watts. to the members of the committee a relieved but what happens next in law enforcement investigation? >> katie it is really going to be in review that will be critical for both the state and really all of us nationwide understand how this individual, who clearly had mental health issues going back to the summer, fylatov and was able to just inflict such pain and violence of this town. we'll also look back at the ways they can do quicker or better reaction. so, this is a very rare situation where there is a highly rural area, not a tremendous number of law enforcement officers, they will also look to see how they can use those techniques, how can they improve those techniques. i think they actually did very well, but it is a scenario where it is a really large rural area, barred from major metropolitan centers. how do you scale your response very very quickly. did they do it right? i think you'll find out they do it right, but can they repeat that in other places around the country. there

in the meantime, joining me now from fbi special agent and msnbc national security analyst, clint wattshe new york times reports that an invasion, rather, of gaza, is a minute. the goal of capturing gaza city, and eliminating hamas leadership is a pretty have to, colbert them. one of the biggest challenges and risks and the expected urban warfare, and how do you see this playing out? >> the first challenge, alex, has already happened. that's what you were discussing earlier this morning. it's the idea of getting the civilians out. where they're going to? so they have put the order out over the last two days that the civilians need to go to the south. i think the second thing is, and there are some updates that are coming out that the humanitarian corridor down to the south will be open to egypt. that is critical for getting people to safety. that was the first part of the military operation. this supported civilians from the military armies of hamas. now you're seeing is probably, on the israeli defense side, it is further reconnaissance to understand two things. one, if the hostages ca

joining us now is former fbi special agent clint watts from the big board.s helpful to see the map, show people what these locations are and just how close they are. >> yeah. >> how little boundary there is between any of these opposing sides. >> i can't stress that enough, what a small physical geographic area this is that we are looking at. already, israel moved this military zone. they have closed it. when you look at what's going on in terms of the security zone here, reminder to everybody, there's only three gates that you see. those gates -- there's a border wall that links them. there's turf here that has to be crossed. there's a gap of 1,000 meters on the gaza side that's only used for farming. separately, you have 100 meters of what is known as the high risk zone on each side. then when you pull back, if you look at that area that the militants of hamas crossed during their terrorist attacks over the weekend, how would israel go about this? it would look like they would have to do what is known as a routine operation. another critical point is each

let's bring in clint watts and former sbi supervisor, carl, thank you for jumping on with us. you were inside this investigation, where would you be focusing your efforts in this search? >> it's understanding why those two targets were chosen. if they imitated, that would be part of it because there might be additional targets the shooter might be going towards or it may speak to where the individual might be hiding or moving to. that is largely where this is preceded, since the two shootings last night, they have not gained traction on where the individual is. we make it an update here at 10:30 but my guess is they are talking to everyone in the community, anyone who knew him when he worked with them and definitely if he was in a mental health facility, checking with those doctors to see if there are any clues. >> when you have someone who is a trained firearms instructor, how might that complicate the manhunt? >> we have a man who has military training, has a military -type weapon and he is essentially waging war on the state of maine, on the innocent from a -- civilians. wh

. >>> let's bring in national security analyst clint watts. hamas put a statement, their militant arm put out a statement they may be willing to release non-israeli hostages. what do you make of that? >> it would be a major shift and i wonder if hamas essentially trying to eliminate the support for international support that israel seems to be gaining day by day in terms of what has happened, what the hamas leadership is trying to figure out how do we diffuse the situation whether countries are not coming to their support or they could be bringing on more advers adversaries. there are american hostages, they may try to minimize their damage of taking the host tanls on every the last week or so with that incursion into israel. >> and clint, iran has been warning of a wider regional war here do we think they're going to be deterred now? >> what's not known is iran's position, there's obvious support, resources, training, logistics, who have gone for years into iran. skirmishes with hezbollah are also concerning. >> clint, thanks so much. >>> com

. >> let's bring in national security analyst for nbc news and msnbc clint watts.on and a lot of moving parts. the one that i'm sort of fascinated with is the arab countries that actually have access to these civilians don't want them, and if you could talk about that. it's like the major difference from, for example, ukraine. >> yeah. so the big issue today, mika, you saw richard engel, he's in ramallah north of jerusalem here. the key point about that, that's the old headquarters of the plo. you might remember yasser arafat. the question has been will this turn into a three-front war. the one front that has opened up is in the north. over the last 48 to 72 hours, is several cross-border attacks. the israeli are said to have moved back and created another demilitarized zone of 2 kilometers and they have pulled back the civilian in the area and there was rocket exchange and hezbollah claims there were missiles launched against israeli tanks along the border yesterday and said that they lost five personnel themselves. i think a lot of tension here on the border add

let's bring in national security analyst for nbc news and msnbc's clint watts.nvasion, and are civilians being protected? >> mika, it is clearly the israeli plan is under way and has been unfolding since late last week. on the 26th, you saw what is a first stage or initial breaching operation, coming in from the north of gaza. on the 28th, you saw another one. you saw tanks rolling in and setting up what would be called an operating base or securing a foothold right over the border. this essentially seals the northern part of gaza for israeli forces, trying to protect any sort of incursion that might occur. separately, what you're seeing today is there is an area here called juhon, right across the barrier area. the main road, salah al-din, has military forces moving up with tanks. there's several battles here and in this area here. the question is, what will happen in gaza city? a lot of the missile strikes and artillery is hitting this part of gaza. everybody is worried about the humanitarian situation. in this northern section, israel said everybody needs to
