a few liberals have been redistricted out to jim clyburn's district. there's an interesting question for democrats, i think, going forward. as they look towards the south, north carolina is changing. it's a purple state. georgia is going to become one already soon if it isn't already. so while this district was probably not winnable for democrats, maybe they would have done better. maybe could have learned some lessons about -- >> let's play hardball right here. why didn't they have a stronger candidate to come out, not a person that's a one-time -- a noviciate, a nun for politics. this was an important seat. >> because it's a difficult seat to win. 18 republicans in the primary and whoever won that primary was going to be very hard to beat. that tells you everything you need to know. >> he had 15 opponents. >> he had -- >> because winning the primary is akin to winning the general election if you're republican and if you're a democrat, you get to be the sacrificial lamb. >> you start taking a lot of money from outside, you're not from south carolina.

. >> one thing i was surprised to learn this morning, talking to jim clyburn, this morning, about theid the issue of chain cpi and the idea of the changing -- basically the unpopular parts of the president's budgets among house democrats really wasn't a big part of the conversation. what was a big part of the conversation? >> jobs, economic growth, fiscal stability, jobs was clearly on the president's mind and his focus. economic growth of our country and getting us on a fiscally stable path. we talked a lot about all of the other issues that are being considered in the congress. we talked about making it an american agenda, about jobs, growth and manufacturing, expanding exports. we also talked about, as you would not be surprised, about gun violence. and also about immigration. we spent a significant time on immigration and on jobs. and i think they were probably the two major subjects that we considered, but we just discussed the whole gamut of issues confronting the -- very positive meeting. >> was he making the case of saying you might not like some of the things i'll compromise

i would discount the two rounds that he had with james clyburn.nd a great friend but he's a friend of the president. that was like inviting a buddy who happened to be a member of congress but john boehner was reaching out to really -- because there is a lot of pressure. hadn't talked to boehner. yesterday, clearly, he decided that the charm offensive may be late in coming but it is important and as jay carney told us yesterday willing to try anything. >> well, you know, it was interesting. i think, you know, the two guys who took it to corker and saxby chambliss and they're going to be important to this whole debt ceiling fight that's coming up in tax reform. and you know, i think chambliss that could work. i think he's not running for re-election. so getting him on board could be important. corker has always -- >> bill: particularly on the budget issues. >> on guns and immigration everybody is where they are. on the budget stuff is where this is going to potentially come into play. >> bill: do you think we'll see more of this in on the part of th
