who would be against commerce? we just said we are living in a world that has been overly come modified. where everything has been turned into a commodity value. people do not have the identities. we are world full of brands and no identity. you can read your entire life -- you can do your business and go about in the world using your credit card and never really look anyone in the eye. a world in which things have been comodified, things that should never have been. you cannot put a price on love. you cannot put a price on things that make life meaningful. but this isn't a consumer culture. even though we know we cannot keep it up. if the chinese adopt our lifestyle, we are all goners, we know that. it is not the third world anymore, it is the developing world. well, they are developing and they want things, too. the 21st century will be about competing for resources. there are not enough in a consuming world when there is no limit of appetite. it is a philosophic position. it would be interesting for people to li

i think the commerce clause will turn out to be an aberration. you can compare it the way it was before 1937 when the court was commonly referred to as nine old men and they were striking down economic and social legislation from the states, from the administration. but then the social security act was passed and in 1937, the court upheld it. i thought that social security, 1937, health care, in 2012 -- they should go the same way. i said i fully expect that my view which was shared by three of my colleagues on the commerce clause was one that has staying power. so - [laughter] >> looking ahead, do you feel you have any unfinished business in your career on or off the court? >> i will do this job as long as i am able to do it the way it needs to be done. our chinatown chamber of commerce is here. and chinatown merchants association for their understanding, cooperation and joint effort to help the chinese community continue a long standing cultural traditional program. the chinatown sidewalk merchants display program from january 26th through february 9. as you may know that it is the chinese tradition and custom throughout the world, merchants would close their businesses for the first seven days to celebrate the chinese new year. that is why mayor lee announced today the sidewalk merchant day program. it's for the those in the bay area to come to chinatown and prepare for the chinese new year for their families' parties. under the leadership of our director mohammed, all the merchants have been well-instructed on how to comply with all the sidewalk rules. last year the pilot program, we had experienced some problems, but now we are confident that we will do a much better job this year and i can guarantee you, mr. mayor, supervisor, director, we will do a much better job. than

commerce depends on it and i think people depend on it. nancy said it very well but let me just say what the ridership is expected to be. when this central subway opens in 2019 daily ridership along the third street line is estimated to be 43,700. this is expected to rise to 65,000 people per day in 2030. this project is estimated to have the second highest ridership per mile of all subway and light rail proposals seeking federal funding nationwide, and it will be the most happily used muni line. that's the rational for this project. no question it's expensive. it's worth it if people use it. it's worth it if they stay out of the automobile. it's worth it if it aids in creating space on our bus lines so it's a very important project. i am here to help in my way which is as an appropriator in the senate. jackie has helped in her way. nancy has helped in her way as a leader of a great political party in washington, so mr. secretary everybody that is here we thank you for our responsiveness. it's just great to welcome you here and go giants.
