gang violence was a problem in the '80s in compton and it's still a problem today and the mayor of comptonst 33 years old, is making a big effort to work with gang members to reduce violence in her city. >> i asked could we get all the gang members that are representative of different neighborhoods together for a meeting and we met here in this building, right here in this community center and talked about is peace possible because the power is in their hands to stop the violence and shootings. so they made a commitment to work together for peace. >> joining me now live on the phone to talk about theater security in the los angeles area is lapd police commander andrew smith. commander smith, thanks so much for being on the show today. give me a bit of a run through in terms of how you're dispatching this security. is it only certain parts of los angeles? is it most theaters in los angeles? and how you chose where the additional manpower will go. >> sure thing. well, l.a. is divided up into 21 geographic areas. each of those areas has a captain and we've asked each of our captains to meet w

mom's birthday, so i'm here with them. it makes you kind of feel uncomfortable. you're here for a family moment. >> reporter: others say if a movie theater chooses to add security, they don't really mind it. >> i actually think it's a good precaution, you know. as a moviegoer it makes me feel a little more safe. >> a lot of people might reenact what they say. it might be good. it might not. it's more good than a bad thing. >> reporter: the movie theater manager said they typically do have security here on the weekend, but a decision about increasing it would come from headquarters. we reached tonight we're hearing from the distraught father of dalis cox. dalis is the 3-year-old girl accidentally shot to death last month by her 7-year-old brother. he was handling a gun at their home in southeast. their father timothy cox is not only in mourning, he's also upset with the latest development in the case. prosecutors say that gun came from a 17-year-old and on monday that teen was charged with child cruelty and illegal possession of a handgun and ammunition. while some parents might welcome the teen's arrest, but not timothy cox. >> i'm feeling the loss and i miss my daughter and i just, you know, think what's going on as far as arrests and things, it's not helping anything. i don't agree with this. >> timothy cox told us he knows the 17-year-old who has been arrested, but he did not want to go into detail. he said a trial only will slow down the process of healing over the loss of his daughter. >>> a couple in wheaton are being held on a bond of nearly $1 million tonight both charged with murdering their son. police say blanca reyes and jonathan navarrete turcious hit the boy repeatedly and failed to get him any medical care. prosecutors say little 2-year- old matthew reyes was covered in cuts and bruises when his parents did finally did bring him to the hospital in february. he died less than an hour after they arrived. >>> there's been a cyber attack on a university of virginia, no personally identifiable information such as social security numbers was accessed and there's no evidence sensitive research material was compromised, but the school does say with more. what's the update? >> reporter: chris, we just got off the phone with police, and they said it appears to be a gang-related shooting. the investigation focused on 807 saratoga avenue. the man came up and fired several times with a 21-year- old man shot in the chest and killed. an 18-year-old and 20-year-old were shot as well. one mother asked we not identify her, but she said her son is very badly shaken up after watching his friend killed in front of him. >> reporter: do you know why anyone would come up and do this? >> that's what i hope the police in can find out. i hope that's what they can find out considering they have the camera there and i don't know what happened. i live around the corner, and someone came and told me my son was one of the victims. >> reporter: her son is expected to make a full recovery, and police have not yet released the man of the man who was killed here last night, and they are still searching for the shooter, but they say there's a number the scene, the shoot her taken off, but they found a 21-year-old man shot in the chest, and he would later die at the hospital, but an 18- year-old man and 20-year-old man shot in the arm survived. i spoke to the mother of the 20- year-old victim, asking we not identify her, but her son is devastated after watching his friend killed in front of him. >> he's alive, but the other young man didn't
