contra costa county and santa cruz moved back to red. what does this mean and what counties are next? >> reporter: california covid cases are rising. the state announcing 11 counties will be forced to add more restrictions including contra costa and santa cruz. and more other counties are also trending in the wrong direction. >> we anticipate if things stay the way they are that between this week and next week over half of california counties will have moved into a more restrictive tier. >> reporter: statewide covid cases have jumped 30% in the past few weeks. the south bay becoming a hot spot again where the percentage of tests coming back positive is going up. >> so the rise of covid cases thin bay area is real. it's kind of a more gradual slope than the rest of the country. >> reporter: ucsf infectious disease specialist says high case counts usually lead to more hospitalizations in the weeks that follow. though it's not happening yet if the health care system becomes overwhelmed we could face another lockdown. >> crossing my fingers
