cory booker met the donor threshold but has not qualified in any of the polls.close to making the cut, at least as far as we know. so many observers are wondering how did the most diverse democratic field in history wind up with a debate stage that could only feature white candidates. joining me now, president of brilliant corners research, cornell belcher. and former democratic congressman and "washington post" columnist, donna edwards. guys, welcome. polling is part of this scenario. is it fair to use polling as a threshold to get to the debate stage? >> well, it's tough. we need a broader conversation because, look, i'm reading the articles talking about how, you know, senator harris campaign wasn't perfect, we got spilled by barack obama. barack obama was a phenomenon. if you go back before barack obama, there's not a lot of people of color that break through. people o and i think so the problem is -- is more structural. so i don't come here to condemn the -- the process. i come here to, quite franfrank condemn the whole establishment because there are issue

the letter was written by cory booker's campaign.ns us now from manchester, new hampshire. tell us more about what this letter says. >> reporter: yes, this letter was spearheaded by senator cory booker's campaign and got all seven of the debate stage candidates for thursday's debate to sign on to it, as well as former -- as well as julian castro signed on to the letter as well. the letter points to a lack of diversity on the debate stage as a critical condition for ranting the dn consider. to open up qualifications not just accepting the grassroots donor threshold or the polling, not a combination of the two. the letter says, quote, the escalating thresholds over the past few months have unnecessarily and artificially narrowed what started as the strongest and most diverse democratic field in history before voters have had a chance to be heard. so the letter comes as it appears booker was not going to appear on the debate stage and calling on the dnc to ease up on the qualifications looking at future debates in january and february.

i missed cory booker. in some ways i disagree a lot with kamala harris, but it is important to see women of color. it was not great to see that sometimes some candidates were asked about issues such as s rae or immigration, criminal justice reform did not come up as much. they changed the topic many times or just the topic does not come up at all. we have a huge impact on howow they're trying to cater to the first states. most of them spend most of their time in iowa right now, where there is a community -- the latino community, very small community of people of color compared too nevada and other states, but it makes a difference in the way they're really talking about the issues. probably at the beginning of the year, they will not talk about immigration or issues that people care about. amy: we spoke to the head of the texas democratic party who said he has been trying to hold the presidential forum in texas and the candidates just keep saying, this is particular significant because of how long the lead

the good news is that cory booker does not ignore faith at all. he is deeply rooted in black churches. julian castro's catholic, that is coming back for him. pete buttigieg is the only candidate who talks about god even when he hasn't -- even when he isn't asked a religious question. climate change as well. losses,n, in his deep it has made him more deeply catholic. elizabeth warren has her bible underlined around matthew 25 or jesus says as you have done to the least of these, you have done to me. we know that a number of them have a deep faith but they are, as devon -- as democrats, reluctant to speak. they would say we believe in the separation of church and state, and i agree but here's the key thing, the separation of church and state -- which i agree with -- does not mean the segregation of moral values from public life. the democrats need to get over that. not impose their religion, like people want to do. no, we need to be pluralistic. respect every faith. religious liberty is an important value. not just our own. i was driven here this mo

cory booker is barely registering.a harris was really struggling to level off there before she exited the field. i'd also say at one point in this race kamala harris was leading the race and she had about the most money in the field. so i don't know if it's a consistent argument to suggest that the unpalatable for candidates of color to be successful. i'd imagine barack obama was running this cycle, i'd imagine he would be pretty successful. i think you have to marry the potential with the actual conversion of support. >> let me ask you this. 76% of democrats and democratic-leaning independent voters say they are undecided. that is a vast majority of democratic voters. are they just undecided between the top six or seven candidates? or does that undecided feeling extend to the entirety of the field? would somebody like cory booker or julian castro or andrew yang have more support if there was more opportunity for them to be heard? and -- and i guess the debate's the best format to do that? >> katy, i think that last po
