nbc news correspondent tom costello is at cape canaveral. tom, there are weather woes this evening.go smoothly? >> reporter: absolutely perfectly. the weather never materialized, thankfully. they had a small problem with a hatch, they solved that, thankfully. they lifted off with four astronauts on board. as home you're saying, didn't we have a spacex launch last summer? we did, it was a test flight with just two astronauts. this is four astronauts, a full nasa mission. it is marking the changeover from nasa turning to the private sector to carry astronauts onto the space station. spacex has proven its technology. this was another big provable moment tonight. boeing is the other provider who will actually also carry astronauts to the space station, as nasa now focuses on going long and deep. it wants to go back to the moon and eventually it wants to go to mars. things could not have been better tonight at the kennedy space center as this falcon 9 rocket lifted off with 1.7 million pounds of thrust and on top of that rocket, the spaceship that the astronauts have dubbed "resilience,"

nbc's tom costello following that part of the story. he's got more on what comes next. the country has never had to do this before, deliver a vaccine like this en masse so quickly. take us through the considerations to getting it to americans, if you can. >> 320 million americans. guess what? if you have the pfizer vaccine or the moderna vaccine, you'll need two shots. we'll see if other vaccinations also require two shots. in the case of pfizer, it has to be kept at negative 94 degrees fahrenheit. the moderna vaccine doesn't need to be kept that cold. immediately you come up with the logistical problem of what facilities, what clinics can super cool something that quickly and for that long. if you open up the box, the cooled box, you have a very small window in which you have to get the viles out and use the viles. if you leave the box open too long, the viles go bad. all of this is ramping up rather dramatically as a part of operation warp speed. we talked to the general in charge of operation warp speed. they believe they have the distribution capacity laid out to go

nbc's tom costello is following this for us. tom, what have you learned?reporter: in five minutes a federal judge will be holding a hearing specifically as it relates to how much and how well the postal service has been processing mail-in ballots. you may recall earlier in the week the postal service admitted that 300,000 ballots had been -- had gone through its system but had not yet been scanned for deliver delivery. the question was, where were those ballots. the judge ordered the postal service to sweep two dozen offices in districts throughout the country looking for those ballots. the postal service declined to do that, declined to, essentially, go along with the judge's order, insisting it was already sweeping for ballots under its own provisions. now the postal service has released new data on how well it delivered mail yesterday. this is very concerning if some ballots were not delivered. in atlanta yesterday, 82% of mail was processed. 61% in central p.a. these are critical battleground states. 66% rate in philadelphia. 78% rate in detroit. by th
