craig anderson was loved and cherished by his family. stylish, he was funny, he was just going about his life in jackson, mississippi. just before dawn on june 26, 2011, a group of white kids from the next town over drove into jackson and they spotted craig anderson in a hotel parking lot. the kids had driven into jackson specifically to look for black people they could harass and beat and terrorize until their victims begged for their lives. they had been doing this kind of thing for months. a group of half dozen kids, sometimes more, they drove from their white county in mississippi into the majority black jackson, the state capitol, and they basically made a sport of it. get a group together, get drunk, drive into jackson specifically to find black people to attack. they threw beer bottles at people, they hit people with their fists, they used slingshots. the first kids to spot craig anderson that night, they kept him in the hotel parking lot until the rest of the kids could arrive they beat him. they screamed at him, called him names

i'm craig melvin. this is "the reid report." i'm in for joy reid. we start with breaking news on deflate gate, the controversy over allegations of cheating by the super bowl bound new england patriots. in about two hours, we'll bring you quarterback tom brady, facing reporters about what happened in that game sunday against the colts. and already in advance of that news conference, nbc news has learned brady addressed the matter with teammates in a closed-door meeting just hours ago. the controversy regards anonymous allegations reported by espn that the nfl has found 11 of 12 game balls used by the pats in that game were inflated below requirements, possibly to gab a competitive advantage, making the footballs softer and easier to throw and catch. nbc ease peter alexander has been following the story closely. he joins me from foxboro, massachusetts. what more do we know about that closed-door meeting between brady and his teammates? >> reporter: well, we know the team was supposed to be here today. it's a regularly scheduled practice day, a team me

he ran craig anderson over with his truck.vehicle and he laughed and told them he just ran the "n" word over and then drove off and anderson died of his injuries in a local hospital. he was attacked by those high school kids specifically and apparently only because of his race. the attack included running him over with a truck and now he was dead at age 47. that was in june 2011 in a modern day state capital. less than two years before that murder, president obama signed an expanded federal hate crimes law in to effect. matthew shepherd was killed in wyoming in 1998 he was beaten, tortured and left to tie because he was gay. james byrd was killed in texas that year. dragged for a mile and a half down a road by white supremacist. a decade after the deaths it was news partly because the law added sexual minorities to hate crimes but one other important change about prosecuting these crimes. previously for the federal government to get involved to prosecute a case like in the victim would have had to do something or trying to do

i'm craig melvin.ew england have started the back-breaking work of bigging out of the snow today. in hard-hit maine, wind gusts of up to 60 miles per hour brought the windchill down to below zero today and today power is slowly being restored to those who suffered outages. john yang is standing post in portland maine. what is the situation like there, john? >> reporter: it is quite different than just 24 hours ago. yesterday he couldn't see half a block down that street. the snow was coming down at a rate of 2-4 inches an hour a total of 27 inches has fallen here in areas of portland. but it is a relatively quick dig nifout dig-out here in maine, these folks are used to this sort of stuff. it is business as usual here in downtown portland. the one thing is the crews stayed ahead of the snow as it fell yesterday. they were plowing as the snow was falling. they were helped by the fact that a lot of drivers -- maine drivers stayed off the roads voluntarily. this is the one state in this region that did no

craig, what can new yorkers expect tonight? >> reporter: i tell you it's good to see new yorkers by in large heeding the warnings from cuomo and de blasio. this is as you know the height of the commute for a lot of new yorkers 6:30. just a handful of people on these streets. very few cars as well. i've seen empty bus, seen taxis. one thing i've noticed -- we've seen a number of tow trucks as well towing cars blocking the salt and plow trucks. one thing i've noticed speaking of salt and plow trucks. we've heard governor cuomo say one of the problems the next few days is because of speed and volume of the snow. plows that make their way through, an hour or two later, it will look like it didn't come through. a block away i saw that road being salted then plowed about two hours ago. now it looks like a plow never touched it. that is going to be something we're going to see obviously over the next day and a half or so. it's good to see people by in large listening to their elected officials. not a lot of folks on the roads. >> crai
