that's where we find craig melvin. craig? >> good morning to you once again. from the streets of new york city here we are driving along 6th avenue now. we're in the chelsea neighborhood. i can tell you that as of a few minutes ago, we've started to see the snow pick up a bit. we have not seen the winds intensify to the level that we saw earlier, but the winds have pukd up a bit as well.-- picked up a bit as well. we can show you a look outside of the car. you don't see a lot of folks on these streets right now. new york city virtually a ghost town. most people seem to be heeding the request from the mayor and governor today to stay off these streets unless you absolutely have to be. we have, though seen a number of vehicles violating the travel ban. mainly taxis. some other cars for hire as well. by and large, the people the pockets of people that we have seen largely in times square these are blizzard tourists so to speak. folks who have come out to snap some really cool pics before the worst of this thing really comes. so again, that's the latest from here

i'm craig melvin.ew england have started the back-breaking work of bigging out of the snow today. in hard-hit maine, wind gusts of up to 60 miles per hour brought the windchill down to below zero today and today power is slowly being restored to those who suffered outages. john yang is standing post in portland maine. what is the situation like there, john? >> reporter: it is quite different than just 24 hours ago. yesterday he couldn't see half a block down that street. the snow was coming down at a rate of 2-4 inches an hour a total of 27 inches has fallen here in areas of portland. but it is a relatively quick dig nifout dig-out here in maine, these folks are used to this sort of stuff. it is business as usual here in downtown portland. the one thing is the crews stayed ahead of the snow as it fell yesterday. they were plowing as the snow was falling. they were helped by the fact that a lot of drivers -- maine drivers stayed off the roads voluntarily. this is the one state in this region that did no

craig melvin has been monitoring responses to our survey on pulse.are the people saying and do we know if the president is going to give them what they want? >> we don't know whether the president is going to give them what they want but we do know we've been asking this question. what matters to you most? economy, national security immigration. 76% say the economy. 3/4 say the economy matters most to them. even when you break it down by party, which we have been doing throughout the day, the numbers stay the same. a lot of folks will say it's the state of the union. it doesn't really matter. the president is going to give this big speech. no one really cares. the reality is actually the opposite. 43%, that's the success of legislative action proposed in an address what that means is the president will say this is what i want to do. 43% of the time it's actually happened. the high mark 1965 with lbj 75% legislative proposal success rate. even when there's a divided government, that remains the case. president clinton in 1994 is an example. take a lis

craig melvin is at at&t stadium in arlington, texas. ood morning to you. i would say roughly 60 70% of the stadium last night ohio state buckeyes fans and we saw them celebrating into the wee hours of the morning, sell bragsz pretty tame in north texas, but got out of hand in columbus, ohio. at one point police put on the riot gear as folks took to the streets on and around the campus. some 8,000 students we are told rushed the stadium, tore down the goalpost. police used tear gas and pepper spray as well. a lot of folks celebrating. the 8th national championship for the ohio state buckeyes. a shoot out deep in the heart of texas and new champion crowned. the game was a slugfest from opening kickoff. ohio state took control, led by third string quarterback jones. and powered by running back ez eek yell elliott. marcus mariota fought back. but the buckeyes wound up on top, final score 42-20. >> the ohio state buckeyes the first national champions of the playoff era. lebron james cheered with a tweet calling elliott a beast. hard to deny.

it's creating more winter storms in the last ---we got craig melvin driving arrange new york city in the snow right now, hopefully very safely and slowly. craig, what are you seeing? >> very safely very slowly up upper west side we're in the upper west side community here in new york city. and i can tell you one of the things that we were looking for, especially, the travel began, as you mentioned there, as we have been talking about, 11:00, that is when all nonessential nonemergency personnel were supposed to be off the roads, off the highways within the past five minutes, i have seen not one, just two cars out here in the upper west side. and as i'm talking to you, there's a third car here coming up. just to kind of give you a sense of what we're looking at here in this particular part of new york city. i can also tell you that the snow has started to come down once again, we had seen that snow taper off a bit. the snow has picked up a fair amount, i would say, within the past 20 or 30 minutes, take a look here this is columbus avenue and 74th and it's a ghost town, you see a hand f

. >> joining us now from glendale arizona, the site of the super bowl is nbc's craig melvin.much drama and so little time. what is going on where you are? >> reporter: so much. so many story lines. right now the big story continues to be the weather here in the desert. it started raining shortly after we got off the plane yesterday. raining all day today. going to rain tomorrow as well. we're told that the rain should stop by the time the big game starts on sunday evening. wouldn't matter a great deal. the university of phoenix stadium behind me is a dome as all of the super bowl venues are. the weather is the big story right now. more than we're told roughly a million people will descend on phoenix, arizona. all of the folks won't get inside but if you have around $9,000 you can still get a ticket. that is the cheapest super bowl ticket we've been able to find on the internet. the game sold out more than 111 million expected to opportunity in on monday and the ads a big deal, the super bowl commercials breaking the record a 30 second commercial going for about $14.5 million.

craig melvin has been keeping an eye on our polls.t the top of people's agendas. >> we are asking folks, what matters most economy, national security or immigration. and we have not seen the numbers shift a great deal throughout the course of the day. 76%, three quarters of the folks taking the poll say it is the economy. this is something else that we want to talk about here really quickly. some folks say the state of the union doesn't really matter. it is just the president giving a big speech in january. not true. in fact we looked at over the course of the last 40 years, 43% successive legislative action proposes in the state of the union address, 43%. and you can see over the course of the years, you can see that -- where some of the speeches -- lbj in 1965. legislative proposal success rate. and this is bill clinton and this is just a snippet of his state of the union. >> there is nothing on earth that should stop congress to banishing assault weapons that cut down police and children. >> that is president clinton talking about

i want to take you to our own craig melvin. he's outside the french mission here in new york.od morning. i can tell you that right now there's no visible stepped up security here. as you indicated the french mission. i was able to get inside a short time ago. managed to get a secretary with a french mission on the phone and all she would say is they're very, very sad. but again no visible stepped up police presence. the police commissioner here in new york city, william bratton did say a short time ago at a news conference that they were on a heightened alert, but they would not be redeploying any additional resources. he said the situation was concerning in paris. they have in place necessary resources that would be redeployed if necessary. he went on to say they have no information regarding direct threats to any groups organizations here in new york city. tamron heightened alert but no visible presence here at the mission. >> all right. thank you very much. new york city has the most sophisticated counter terrorism capability in the u.s. they are standing contingency plans
