cristina: what does that mean with the corporate tax rate? rep.jeffries: president obama had put forth in his most recent budget a proposal that would have dropped of the corporate tax rate from the current level of 35% to 28%. democrats recognize that there is room for lowering the corporate tax rate given that the rate on the books, not necessarily the rate the corporations pay, but the rate on the books, is higher than most of the developed world. dropping it from 35% to 15% is unacceptable for most democrats. certainly not acceptable for me. because there is no evidence if you drop the corporate tax rate that the lion's share of benefits will go to the american people. that actually is a big debate we need to have in this country. it used to be the case where many fortune 500 companies were concerned about consumers, concerned about their workers, concerned about their shareholders. we have seen a dramatic shift since 1980 into a place where a lot of corporations are more concerned about their shareholders and dividends, things of that nature,

cristina marcos, what is the purpose of these hearings? guest: since the senate health care bill went down in flames earlier this summer, the plan is that the senate health committee will have hearings with state insurance commissioners and several governors, in both democratic and republican states, to talk about maybe there are some bipartisan solutions lawmakers can agree on, rather than going with the original republican plan of straight up repealing and replacing the health care law. and so, some of these governors have been working on bipartisan solutions of their own, like governor john hickenlooper of colorado, he is one of the governors set to testify. he has been working on a proposal to stabilize the health market. he has been working with ohio governor john kasich, a republican. they are hoping to get some more input on that. as chairman alexander said, these governors and state insurance commissioners are at the center of the problem. host: will there be more effort in the fall to repeal the health care law, or fix the current

. >> new at 6:00, ktvu's cristina rendon is in the newsroom after talking with the family about how they want their dad to be remembered. >> reporter: frank, julie, we can tell you that demilo hodge had four children and we actually spoke with two of them today. they invited us into their home in vallejo where they say their father was a very loving man. they are trying to figure out exactly what happened in the standoff wednesday. they say he was loving, always focused on his family and they had -- they believe they were on his mind in the hours before his death. in the final moments of demilo hodge's wife he reached out to his wife and children by phone after he was cornered by police on interstate 80 in emeryville. he was wanted on suspicion of murder. 21-year-old son j.t. hodge says he didn't understand what was happening when he heard his dad on the line and the voice of a police sergeants in the background. >> as soon as i turned on the tv the news pop up and i see his truck, you know, driving along the street and i hear him talking on the phone to us and saying how much he loves u

cristina marcos is with us, a reporter for "the hill." the trump administration called on congress to vote to raise the debt ceiling before the august recess. obviously, they did not do that. what have you heard from house and senate leaders about their plans to schedule a vote on the debt ceiling? and when is the deadline to avoid default? guest: the default deadline that has been issued by the treasury department is september 29, which, incidentally, is one day before funding for the federal government expires. what is likely at this point to happen is that congress may lump both of those things into one vote rather than forcing the republicans to take two votes. so they can lift the debt ceiling and keep the government funded at the same time. speaker paul ryan, senator mcconnell, steve mnuchin, have emphasized the market should not worry because they are confident this will be dealt with in a timely manner. host: are we expecting a clean vote on the debt limit as the white house has been calling for? guest: there has been mixed messag

in alameda county, cristina rendon, ktvu fox 2 news. >>> new information now in a deadly truck crash on interstate 580 near castro valley that happened just after 4 a.m. the accident backed up traffic for much of the day. the driver was killed in the crash. he has been identified as 62- year-old mcclavio lopez of roseville. it started when a car hit a big rig, which then stopped right on the freeway. investigators say lopez was driving another big rig when he slammed right into the rear of the first semi truck that had stopped. the highway patrol issued a "sig alert" and shut down westbound lanes. those lanes didn't re-open until about 2 p.m. today, almost 10 hours after that crash. >>> now to the south bay where a man was arrested after a prowler was reported to police. someone reported a suspicious man outside their home. police say when they arrived in campbell the suspects fired up to 3 shots before leaving the scene. officers reported hearing eight to 12 more shots in the next 15 minutes. no one was hit. >> obviously this is a critical situation. safety is our priority. so based

ktvu's cristina rendon is in the newsroom. you talked with witnesses on the scene and the mother was understandably frantic. >> reporter: that's right, frank. frantic and crying. that's what one woman who works near the a crash site told me. she helped translate for the woman when first responders arrived. we understand the boy was airlifted to a hospital where he is in extremely critical condition. the 3-year-old was hit by a car around 11:30 a.m. on the 2700 block of mcdonald avenue. richmond police say the boy was with his mother trying to get into the family's van which was parked on the curb of mcdonald and we understand the boy just ran around and got away from the mother and ran into the street. she tried to stop the boy but he was hit by a red smart car traveling westbound on mcdonald. police say witnesses reported seeing that smart car stop momentarily and then keep driving. >> it's tragic whenever anyone gets hit by a vehicle and most of the time, it's an accident. and i just wish that people would remember that and
