cristina rendon. ktvu news. >>> there's widespread damage to homeless and businesses all across the north bay. this is what the safeway store looked like in american canyon. a lot of things fell off shelves and right into the aisles. a worker says he and the rest of his night crew were on the job stocking shelves when the earthquake happen. he also told us it will probably take at least two days to get this safeway back to normal. >>> roofs collapsed on the vehicles at a napa apartment complex trapping or crushing in cars and suvs. at least four trucks were damaged. one woman described watching the destruction as it happened. >> the earthquake had just stopped and i just saw the whole roof of the carport just collapse. and it was, it was loud. you could hear it cracking and just a big boom and it just landed right on all these cars. >> reporter: it's hard to tell just how many cars were actually parked there. some smaller vehicles may have been spared. if they were parked between taller vehicles that

cristina rendon, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> and we are following developing news in missouri. protesters are gathering for a fifth straight night in ferguson, missouri. so far it has been peaceful. it is a city where a police officer shot and killed an unarmed teenager saturday sparking days of violent protests there. the governor today ordered the state highway patrol to take over security. they marched through the city where 18-year-old michael brown was killed. >>> here in the bay area demonstrators are reacting to the shooting in missouri. hundreds of people gathered outside city hall today to remember michael brown. demonstrators say they are holding a vigil for all those who have been killed by police in the bay area and in san francisco 100 people gathered, many holding up their arms during a moment of violence. demonstrators wanted to stand in solidarity against the shooting in ferguson, missouri but all acts of what they describe as excessive police force. the event was part of a national moment of silence to honor victims. >>> here is a live look at new york where pr

cristina rendon, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> police and the chp are investigating after a woman stole a taxi cab and drove the wrong way down highway 4. this video shows the taxi driving east in the westbound lanes. the 40-year-old caused two crashes and forced officials to shut down the highway. in both collisions drivers tried to avoid hitting the taxi. there were multiple minor injuries. they believe drugs may have been a factor. >>> the southbound lanes of highway 17 are back open after beg shut down for two hours. a tree fell across the lanes. these pictures from news chopper 2 show crews working to clear the rode way. it came down -- roadway. it came down before 2:00 p.m. highway 17 southbound didn't reopen till 4:00 p.m. this afternoon and by then the traffic was a mess. >>> music fans spent hundreds of dollars to see paul mccartney close down candlestick park last night. some were left stranded outside stuck in all the traffic. ktvu's david stevenson is live now with the story of one fan who is now fighting mad. david? >> reporter: that fan is one of many who described a traffic

cristina rendon, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> now to a weather alert. a fire weather watch tomorrow for solano county. fire danger going up all over the state with red flag warnings favorable dry lightning strikes -- favorable for dry lightning strikes. the fire grew over night to 8500 acres. it is 30% contained. the fire was started by dry lightning on wednesday. since then dozens of people have been evacuated, 11 people hurt and 8 firefighters. ktvu's mark tamayo is keeping an eye on the conditions out there. >> he joins us now in the weather center with what the conditions look like. >> with the threat of more lightning strikes that is a concern. with the fire burning the key challenge has been the terrain, hard to get to, extreme conditions. looking at the terrain itself. 101. out to the west. you can see the terrain, high mountains. as far as the weather conditions today, right now 81 degrees near the fire. winds gusting to 18 miles per hour. humidity at 30%. in terms of the lightning, right now tracking a weather system, circulation, swirl to the

cristina rendon, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you. joining us on the phone is brad, with the u.s. geological survey. what can you tell us what is the most important part of the earthquake? >> we can have these earthquakes almost anywhere in the bay area. even on the smallest faults. >> i grew up in the bay area and i have been hearing all my life the big one is going to happen, does this mean anything in terms of the big one. does make it more or less likely that could happen? >> we are still evaluating the effects of how this earthquake altered the stresses in the surrounding area. but generally the smaller events do not relieve the stress that are needed to be relieved by the larger event. and a reminder, it has been 25 years since the earthquake and we can expect these large events at any time. >> what can you tell people about aftershocks? that is a real concern for a lot of people. a lot of buildings in the downtown area have been weakened, if we have the potential for aftershocks there is more concern more people will be injured

ktvu's cristina rendon is at queen of the valley hospital with more on the injury report there. >> reporter this has been quite the unusual day for the hospital but this is what they train for and they put that plan into action when that earthquake hit early this morning. tonight as you take a look behind me, there's a tent set up at the triage center. but there's not many people being serviced at this hour. since 3:20 this morning they have seen 208 people come into the emergency room and that number is growing. of those 17 people have been admitted, injuries ranging from broken hips to respiratory issues. one person remains in critical condition. the 14-year-old boy who left here in critical condition has been upgraded to serious condition at uc davis medical center. he was injured by debris from a collapsing chimney. as this date has progressed the number of initial injuries has decreased and the number of clean up injuries has started to rise. so please be careful when you're cleaning up any damaged areas whether that be from sharp items or glass material, but again as i said there was

i'm cristina rendon. tori campbell is off. >>> we begin with preparations underway right now for a natural disaster. san francisco public schools are taking part in an earthquake drill in response tonight napa earthquake. alex savidge has more. >> reporter: good afternoon. well, what happened in napa this past weekend was certainly an important reminder that everyone needs to know what to do when the shaking starts and with that in mind, we were hear inside la fayette elementary school in san francisco this morning for a very important drill. after hearing an emergency announcement from the principal, this was the scene as students in this fifth grade class all immediately dropped to the floor, got under their desks and covered their heads. this was part of a districtwide earthquake drill prompted by sunday's 6.0 quake in the napa area. after the students sheltered under their desk, teachers evacuated their classes out to the playground and some kids say they understand how important this kind of practice

but we begin in santa clara with cristina rendon she's at a charity that's asking for help tonight after a fire destroyed a lot of their donations. cristina. >> reporter: well, there's still one fire truck here keeping an eye on things but once that the dust has settled here's a look at the rubble left behind. leaving this charity with a lot to clean up. >> reporter: black plumes of smoke filled the sky in santa clara. >> you could hear some crackling. it looked pretty intense. >> reporter: as dozens of donated items went up in flames. >> they told us to stay in the building and not to come into this area. >> reporter: the fire started in a donation bin behind hope services. a nonprofit organization that helps people with development disabilities in the south bay. flames quickly spread to three trucks filled with clothes and clothing itemses. >> they use these trucks to collect items from people around the bay area. >> reporter: a hope center spokesperson said that several people made a heroic attempt to save these trucks. fire crews had flames under control within an hour but they still
