i'm candy crowley. on the ground in eastern ukraine, international observers say 196 bodies have been found, recovered, and loaded on to trains. joining me now, secretary of state john kerry. there pl secretary it's good to see you. let me start off with whether you know anything new about the downing of this malaysian airliner from intelligence information, what do we know now for certain? >> well, we know for certain a lot more, candy. we know for certain that in the last month, there's been a major flow of arms and weapons. there was a convoy several weeks ago, about 150 vehicles with armed personnel carrier, multiple rocket launchers, tanks, artillery, all of which crossed over from russia into the eastern part of ukraine, and was turned over to the separatists. we know for certain that the separatists have a proficiency that they've gained by training from russians, as to how to use these sophisticated sa-11 systems. we know they have the system. we know that they had this system to a certainty on

crowley forme. how likely do you think a ground invasion of gaza is at this point. >> there is pushing on both sides to continue this conflict at least for the time being. along with this goes on the greater likelihood of escalation on one or both sides. >> the sooner one can achieve a cease-fire the better. one will come. we've gone through this cycle of violence before. you know, 2008-2009, you know, 2012. but as nick schifrin's reporting suggest that for the moment both sides seem to be intent on trying to inflict as much damage or terror on the other. to have the dialogue and try to find a way to at least first prevent further escalation, and second, find a way to achieve a cease-fire. >> i do want to ask you about the potential for cease-fire. but you brought up a good point. both sides here are trying to inflict as much damage on the other. but as we've shown our viewers throughout this week and some video just now and earlier reporting, it's a very lopsided affair in terms of what israel coul

crowley joins us live. a pleasure to have you with us. first off, we're seeing tanks line up out of gaza, are we looking at another invasion? >> we could see another confrontation between israel and hamas. that's the danger here. the events in israeli-palestinian relations are never static. they're either moving forward or backward. we're seeing a negative cycle right now and where there is uncertainty there are bad actors who are more than willing to step into the breach as we've seen. >> who needs to step in now to stop it? >> well, i think that, you know, on both sides there are gestures that are trying to contain this from further escalation. but understanding that there are--there is such a deep pool of mistrust on both sides, and obviously there are some sandies here. for example, in the context of hamas they formed not long ago unit governments with fatah. there is the promise of elections coming forward. hamas has had a bad time of it over the last two or three years. they're under great political pressure at home in terms of what

crowley, who served as assistant secretary of state during the first obama administration and is nowellow at george washington university. mark, i want to start with you. from your sources in the intelligence community, is there any certainty on whether the surface to air missile was from russia or from the rememberrals. >> not certainty on that point. you heard president obama put the point pretty clearly on moscow today either they did it themselves or they give it to the rebels and doing this by proxy. either way the president said intelligence officials are sort of pointing out, it's russia is escalating the conflict by introducing these surface to air missiles. but you raise a good point, exactly how this happened, exactly how the missiles got there and when they got there is still an important point and question to answer. >> sreenivasan: is there any kind on time line how they could make such a determination. >> it would be going back to satellite images looking at the plumes of smoke, about where exactly these were fired, going back to intelligence. we heard in the last coupl

pj crowley is a former assistant secretary of state of media and now pressor. there is a lot on the plate around the world. what is your sense of where this takes the escalation in the east of ukraine and what you suspect might happen there next? >> shepherd, first, it is different than the malaysian, the missing malaysian aircraft that we experienced earlier in the year, obviously there is a crash scene, and so there will be flight data recorders that should be recovered and you are in one of the densist parts of the world so you will have a lot of imagery and radar, so we should be able to answer many of the questions going forward, such as what kind of system, from what lined of location and obviously who was operating in that location, from ground to air or air-to-air. we should be able to answer the questions in a relatively short period of time. it will be critically important that all countries with weaponry radar cooperate and bring that material together. >> pj, we have a lot of assets for reasons that should be obvious to everyone. intelligence assets

joining us, michael crowley for "time." david, considering the u.s.$10 million on this guy's head, that this was apparently a prearranged appearance in a very public place, does the fact there were no repercussions, that we couldn't get him then speak to how deep the void of intelligence is in this area? >> absolutely. and this is a real power play by him. a pr power play. he's trying to show other jihadist young men come fight with me. come join isis. look how powerful i am. i can stand in public, deliver this long sermon and there apparently was no american intelligence, any sense at all that he was there. >> michael, this guy has been dubbed the next bin laden. bin laden never went this far in terms of making public appearances that were announced like that. what should that tell us about al baghdadi and his strength right now? >> well, you know, part of it is just a reflection of a core goal of isis that bin laden didn't share or didn't emphasize as a short-term goal which is acquiring territory and creating essentially a state. so if you have a s
